the main data-driven techniques for detecting cybersecurity attacks are based on the analysis of network traffic data and/or of application/system logs (stored in a host or in some other kind of device). A wide range of machine-learning techniques (and possible alternative configurations of them) have been proposed in the literature so far, for this purpose, but none of them has been proven to consistently overcome the others across different datasets. In order to ensure better accuracy and stability, the ensemble paradigm can be exploited as an effective solution for combining such techniques. However, as attack detection problems are hard to cope with and, usually, entail the analysis of large and fast streams of data, different types of ensemble (and of base algorithms composing the ensemble) should have experimented, exploiting distributed architecture to suitably reduce the high-execution times necessary to run them. In order to handle all these issues, a p2p environment to validate ensemble-based approaches in the cybersecurity domain is proposed in this paper. Two case studies are analyzed by using this framework, which concern the detection of intrusions in network-traffic data and of deviant process instances. Preliminary scalability results demonstrate that the framework is a viable solution for these challenging kind of problems.

An ongoing work is presented for accurately predicting the performance of distributed applications in heterogeneous systems. We are developing dPerf, a tool built using the Rose framework for performing static analysis and an automatic instrumentation on the input source code of programs written in C, C++ or Fortran. the accuracy in predicting program computation time resides in using hardware counters, as well as in applying two block benchmarking techniques that we propose in this paper. the current work makes use of a network simulator in order to calculate the communication time used in our approach. Afterwards, the computation and communication times are being summed up obtaining an estimation of the distributed application execution time. the approach is proven experimentally using NAS Integer Sort benchmark, the communications being simulated with SimGrid.

HPC systems and parallel applications are increasing their complexity. therefore the possibility of easily study and project at large scale the performance of scientific applications is of paramount importance. In this paper we describe a performance analysis method and we apply it to four complex HPC applications. We perform our study on a pre-production HPC system powered by the latest Arm-based CPUs for HPC, the Marvell thunderX2. For each application we spot inefficiencies and factors that limit their scalability. the results show that in several cases the bottlenecks do not come from the hardware but from the way applications are programmed or the way the system software is configured.

Deadlocks are an important issue in wormhole networks and a lot of works have been done on deadlock avoidance. Sufficient and necessary deadlock-freeness conditions have been proposed and used to build deadlock-free wormhole networks. But none of these works provide an efficient way to verify if a given network is deadlock-free. the present article proposes a new sufficient and necessary condition associated with a polynomial algorithm to check if a given network is deadlock-free. this new algorithm identifies escape paths from channels that are involved in circular dependencies. Identifying escape paths can be easily done by studying strongly connected components of the dependency graph instead of studying individually each cycle. the proposed algorithm has been implemented in a tool for automatic detection of deadlocks in wormhole networks (ODI). ODI has been used to establish the deadlock-freeness of complex realistic networks and networks with defective routers.

We introduce Arbor, a performance portable library for simulation of large networks of multi-compartment neurons on HPC systems. Arbor is open source software, developed under the auspices of the HBP. the performance portability is by virtue of back-end specific optimizations for x86 multicore, Intel KNL, and NVIDIA GPUs. When coupled with low memory overheads, these optimizations make Arbor an order of magnitude faster than the most widely used comparable simulation software. the single-node performance can be scaled out to run very large models at extreme scale with efficient weak scaling.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems receive growing acceptance, and the need of identifying the states of nodes appears increasingly in a variety of P2P based applications. In this paper, we propose Hermes, an algorithm to efficiently spread and maintain the states of all nodes in large scale systems. Hermes uses an improved push & pull style gossip process to spread the states of all nodes, and proposes a novel synopsis technique to maintain the states of all nodes locally at each node. Simulation results show that, in a N-node network with commonly accepted configurations, Hermes is 2 rounds faster than push & pull style gossip to spread the state of one node to the whole network;each node only needs to store a very small part of global state data to maintain the whole view of all nodes states in the network, which is updated dynamically with high accuracy.

Checkpointing-Aided parallel Execution (CAPE) is a framework that is based on checkpointing technique and serves to automatically translates and execute OpenMP programs on distributed-memory architectures. through some comparisons with MPI, CAPE has demonstrated high-performance and the potential for fully compatibility with OpenMP on distributed-memory systems. However, there is still a long way to improve the performance, flexibility, portability and capability. this paper presents the new execution model for CAPE that improves its performance and makes CAPE even more flexible.

this paper introduces a simple generalized formal model for patrolling games that is suitable for decision making regarding the efficient use of scarce resources in surveillance applications. the model is then mapped to a multi-agent simulation using Jason agent oriented programming language. We present the details of the multi-agent model of the game, as well as experimental results that we obtained by simulating a sample patrolling game. the main contribution of the paper is the mapping of the formal game model, as inspired by game theory, to the more practical agent-oriented programming approach, as advocated by agent-oriented software engineering.

Energy-efficiency is becoming one of the most critical issues in embedded system design. In network-on-Chip (NoC) based heterogeneous Multiprocessor Systems, the energy consumption is influenced dramatically by task allocation schemes. Although various approaches are proposed to allocate tasks in an energy-efficient way, existing work does not well explore the tradeoff between the two major power consumers, namely the processors and network links, resulting in suboptimal mappings from a system point of view. In this paper, we first extend the existing Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation to take both processing and communication energy into account. thereafter, we propose a Simulated Annealing with Timing Adjustment (SA-TA) heuristic to accelerate the optimization process. While the SA-TA algorithm achieves performance very close to the global optimum, significant improvement in computation speed is observed.

High performance computing (HPC) is becoming mandatory for the simulation of complex and realistic neuronal models. the development of such realistic models will allow to discover innovative therapies and to study brain diseases without undertaking invasive experiments that are not always possible. However, the models complexity requires adopting suitable technologies in order to provide results in short times, hopefully in real-time. To address this issue, the authors decided to exploit Graphics processing Units (GPUs) in order to develop a realistic and morphologically detailed Purkinje cell model. this paper describes the simulation of the Purkinje cell activity adopting both single and multi-GPU strategy, together with the exploitation of different NVIDIA architectures. Results shows that the simulation times of 10000 cells is reduced from 13 days and 18 hours to about 2 hours.
