Solar powered wireless sensor networks are very adapted to smart city applications, since they can operate for extended durations with minimal installation costs. Nonetheless, they require energy management schemes to operate reliably, unlike their grid-powered counterparts. Such schemes require the forecasting of future solar power inputs for each wireless sensor node, over a time horizon. they also require the determination of battery energy parameters in real time. To address both requirements, we propose a collaborative solar power forecasting framework combined to a real time battery capacity estimation model, which can be used to optimize the node schedules over the corresponding horizon. © 2015 ieee.

the first wave of sensor network deployments from the early 2000s relied on aggregation-a strategy in which readings are combined locally using low-power radio links before they are communicated to the gateway. Aggregation reduced dependence on battery-draining, long-distance radio links, and reduced redundancy among reported data. We are now experiencing a second wave of sensor network research driven by ubiquitous smartphone usage. In this paper, we study the application of aggregation to the new smartphone sensor network setting, arguing that it can help reduce costs in contexts where existing cost-reduction strategies, such as opportunistic use of Wi-Fi and data piggybacking, do not apply. In more detail, we propose two new aggregation protocols, designed for the challenges of high mobility, that offer trade-offs in terms of bandwidth and energy savings. We then evaluate these protocols using both testbed experimentation (using a collection of 11 Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphones running a NoiseTube-like application) and trace-based simulation (using a large collection of mobility traces from taxi cabs in Singapore). Our experiments demonstrate that our aggregation protocols reduce cellular bandwidth usage by up to 95% while losing less than 5% of the data. Moreover, in many common cases, our protocols also yield significant energy savings.

the highly beneficial contribution of intelligent systems in the industrial domain is undeniable. Automation, supervision, remote control, and fault reduction are some of the various advantages new technologies offer. A protocol demonstrating high utility in industrial settings, and specifically, in smart grids, is distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3), a multi-tier, application layer protocol. Notably, multiple industrial protocols are not as securely designed as expected, considering the highly critical operations occurring in their application domain. In this paper, we explore the internal vulnerabilities-by-design of DNP3, and proceed with the implementation of the attacks discovered, demonstrated through 8 DNP3 attack scenarios. Finally, we design and demonstrate a Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based, multi-model Intrusion Detection systems (IDS), trained with our experimental network flow cyberattack dataset, and compare our solution with multiple machine learning algorithms used for classification. Our solution demonstrates a high efficiency in the classification of DNP3 cyberattacks, showing an accuracy of 99.0%.

In contrast to original belief, recent work has demonstrated the viability of IPv6-based Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs). this has led to significant research and standardization efforts with outcomes such as the "IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Networks" (6LoWPAN) specification. the Contiki embedded operating system is an important open source, multi-platform effort to implement 6LoWPAN functionality for constrained devices. Alongside its RFC-compliant TCP/IP stack (uIP), it provides support for 6LoWPAN and many related standards. As part of our work, we have made considerable fixes and enhancements to one of Contiki's ports. In the process, we made significant optimizations and a thorough evaluation of Contiki's memory and code footprint characteristics, focusing on network-related functionality. In this paper we present our experiences from the porting process, we disclose our optimizations and demonstrate their significance. Lastly, we discuss a method of using Contiki to deploy an embedded Internet-to-6LoWPAN router. Our porting work has been made available to the community under the terms of the Contiki license.

In Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs), congestion can cause a plethora of malfunctions such as packet loss, lower throughput and energy inefficiency, potentially resulting in reduced deployment lifetime and under-performing applications. this has led to several proposals describing congestion control (CC) mechanisms for sensor networks. Furthermore, the WSN research community has made significant efforts towards power saving MAC protocols with Radio Duty Cycling (RDC). However, careful study of previous work reveals that RDC schemes are often neglected during the design and evaluation of congestion control algorithms. In this paper, we argue that the presence (or lack) of RDC can drastically influence the performance of congestion detection. In addition, most WSN CC mechanisms are evaluated under traditional sensor network topologies and protocols (e. g. trickle data dissemination, tree data collection). the emerging IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN) and related standards pose a new requirement: we now need to investigate if previous findings regarding congestion control are still applicable. In this context, this paper contributes a comprehensive evaluation of existing congestion detection mechanisms in a simulated, multi-node 6LoWPAN sensor network. We present results from two sets of experiments, differentiated by the presence or lack of RDC.

With the inception of IPv6 it is possible to assign a unique ID to each device on planet. Recently, wireless sensor networks and traditional IP networks are more tightly integrated using IPv6 and 6LoWPAN. Real-world deployments of WSN demand secure communication. the receiver should be able to verify that sensor data is generated by trusted nodes and/or it may also be necessary to encrypt sensor data in transit. Available IPv6 protocol stacks can use IPsec to secure data exchanges. thus, it is desirable to extend 6LoWPAN such that IPsec communication with IPv6 nodes is possible. It is beneficial to use IPsec because the existing end-points on the Internet do not need to be modified to communicate securely with the WSN. Moreover, using IPsec, true end-to-end security is implemented and the need for a trustworthy gateway is removed. In this demo we will show the usage of our implemented lightweight IPsec. We will show how IPsec ensures end-to-end security between an IP enabled sensor networks and the traditional Internet. this is the first compressed lightweight design, implementation, and evaluation of a 6LoWPAN extension for IPsec. this demo complements the full paper that will appear in the parent conference, dcoss'11.

With the advancement of modern robotics, autonomous agents are now capable of hosting sophisticated algorithms, which enables them to make intelligent decisions. But developing and testing such algorithms directly in real -world systems is tedious and may result in the wastage of valuable resources. Especially for heterogeneous multi -agent systems in battlefield environments where communication is critical in determining the system's behavior and usability. Due to the necessity of simulators of separate paradigms (co -simulation) to simulate such scenarios before deploying, synchronization between those simulators is vital. Existing works aimed at resolving this issue fall short of addressing diversity among deployed agents. In this work, we propose SynchroSim, an integrated co -simulation middleware to simulate a heterogeneous multi-robot system. Here we propose a velocity difference-driven adjustable window size approach with a view to reducing packet loss probability. It takes into account the respective velocities of deployed agents to calculate a suitable window size before transmitting data between them. We consider our algorithm specific simulator agnostic but for the sake of implementation results, we have used Gazebo as a Physics simulator and NS -3 as a network simulator. Also, we design our algorithm considering the Perception -Action loop inside a closed communication channel, which is one of the essential factors in a contested scenario with the requirement of high fidelity in terms of data transmission. We validate our approach empirically at both the simulation and system level for both line -of-sight (LOS) and non -line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. Our approach achieves a noticeable improvement in terms of reducing packet loss probability (approximate to 11%), and average packet delay (approximate to 10%) compared to the fixed window size-based synchronization approach.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) brings new challenges to wireless sensor networks (WSNs): large volume of data, sophisticated computing, engineering-driven optimal deployment, and so forth. In this paper, we address two important challenges: sensor placement and decentralized computing. We propose a solution to place sensors at strategic locations to achieve the best estimates of geometric properties of a structure. To make the deployed network resilient to faults caused by communication errors, unstable network connectivity, and sensor faults, we present an approach, called FTSHM (fault tolerance in SHM), to repairing the network to guarantee a specified degree of fault tolerance. FTSHM searches the repairing points in clusters and places a set of backup sensors at those points by satisfying civil engineering requirements. FTSHM also includes a SHM algorithm suitable for decentralized computing in energy-constrained WSNs, with the objective to guarantee that the WSN for SHM remains connected in the event of a sensor fault thus prolonging the WSN lifetime under connectivity and data delivery constraints. We demonstrate the advantages of FTSHM through simulations and experiments on a real civil structure.

this paper introduces YA-MAC, an agile Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol to provide high throughput for both unicast and broadcast traffic in Duty-Cycled Multi-hop Wireless sensor Networks (DCM-WSN). YA-MAC is implemented under the UPMA framework in TinyOS and is evaluated on TelosB and MicaZ testbeds. We observe that YA-MAC significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art SCP-MAC protocol in terms of throughput by 60%, while tolerating a more dynamic network, at a small cost to duty-cycle performance. Further, we show that YA-MAC's idle listening radio power consumption is 35% less than RI-MAC's, while achieving similar throughput and latency. © 2011 ieee.
