Wireless sensor and actuator networks (WS&ANs) are a new technology based on networks of small radio-enabled embedded devices that are being deployed in areas such as environmental monitoring, vehicle tracking, building management, body monitoring and other applications. Power sources for network nodes are often limited, which imposes restrictions on hardware resources and their use by the underlying embedded software. We propose a new wireless sensor network architecture that is especially designed for the task of home automation. Our system relies on a low power WS&AN that employs energy harvesting techniques to maximize node lifetime and an embedded residential gateway that offers user interaction and secure connectivity to the outside world. the advantages of our system are its scalability, low power, self sufficiency and versatility. © 2011 ieee.

the need to monitor groups of mobile entities arises in many application contexts. Examples include the study of the social behavior of humans and wildlife, the shepherding of livestock, the care giving to people that are not self-sufficient. Human- or animal-borne wireless devices can be used to detect the joining or leaving of group members, even in infrastructure-less scenarios. In this work, we apply wireless sensor networks devices to this problem that has hitherto received little attention. We analyze three points of the solution space. At one extreme, group membership information is proactively and collectively maintained by each node in the group. At the other extreme, the dissemination of group membership updates is triggered reactively by relying on a lower-level neighbor discovery protocol. In the middle lies a solution borrowing ideas from the two extremes. We compare our solutions through simulation of synthetic scenarios and real-world mobility traces of humans. © 2011 ieee.

Task mapping, which basically consists of mapping a set of tasks onto a set of nodes, is a well-known problem in distributed computing research. As a particular case of distributed systems, the Internet of things (IoT) poses a set of renewed challenges, because of its scale, heterogeneity and properties traditionally associated with wireless sensor networks (WSN), shared sensing, continous processing and real time computing. To handle IoT features, we present a formalization of the task mapping problem that captures the varying consumption of resources and various constraints (location, capabilities, QoS) in order to compute a mapping that guarantees the lifetime of the concurrent tasks inside the network and the fair allocation of tasks among the nodes. It results in a binary programming problem for which we provide an efficient heuristic that allows its resolution in polynomial time. Our experiments show that our heuristic: (i) gives solutions that are close to optimal and (ii) can be implemented on reasonably powerful things and performed directly within the network, without requiring any centralized infrastructure.

this work presents the design and evaluation of the REAM (Remote Electricity Actuation and Monitoring) node based around the modular Tyndall Mote platform. the REAM node enables the user to remotely actuate power to a mains power extension board while sampling the current, voltage, power and power factor of the attached load. the node contains a current transformer interfaced to an Energy Metering IC which continuously samples current and voltage. these values are periodically read from the part by a PIC24 microcontroller, which calculates the RMS current and voltage, power factor and overall power. the resultant values can then be queried wirelessly employing the Tyndall 802.15.4 compliant wireless module. © 2011 ieee.

this paper presents a two-level strategy for topology control in wireless sensor networks. the energy saving methods in most of the existing research work can be categorized into two types: active subnetwork and short hops. the active subnetwork and short hops methods have different network conditions for them to perform well. We propose a two-level topology control strategy which integrates the above two methods to achieve further energy saving. the simulation results show that the two-level topology control strategy achieves better performance in terms of energy saving than both active subnetwork and short hops methods in networks with a wide range of node densities.

Mobile services can be characterized by wireless transmission and sensor data, so typical mobile cloud systems include additional servers which are not found in the traditional cloud systems. "Push/Sync" servers are examples to enhance wireless network experience, but no server can be found to aid the delivery of sensor data. As a result, developers have to write code to access sensor data using their own protocols under the error-prone wireless network, which makes the development time longer. To address this issue, we propose a mobile sensor device virtualization scheme that allows developers to access sensor data using local (cloud-side) sensor APIs instead of network APIs even if the services are run on cloud servers. therefore, it is much easier to develop mobile services.

A ubiquitous computing environment entails numerous embedded devices with enough computational power. Such distributed computing resources can cooperate to create applications which support users' everyday lives. Such an environment requires robust middleware that can handle a large quantity of messages, such as event data or sensor data are occurred between devices. However the lack of middleware technologies with such functionalities has been making it difficult to create ubiquitous computing applications that we can depend on in their everyday life. In this paper we propose a novel middleware, named RT-Dragon, which can handle numerous messages with robustness. RT-Dragon can work effectively on systems both real-time and non-realtime runtime because of the mechanism of two level priority-based task processing. In this paper additionally, we evaluate the effectiveness of RT-Dragon on non-RT runtime.

Real world MANETs often exhibit an inherent community structure in their topological connectivity and in the evolution of the topology over time. Such temporal community structure of MANETs has been shown to be extremely useful in improving the performance of routing and content-based routing in MANETs [1]-[4]. However, detecting temporal communities in a completely distributed and real time manner is a hard problem, and it is often performed offline with knowledge of the full network topology over time. We propose CLAN, a distributed and real-time protocol for detecting temporal communities in MANETs. CLAN is an adaptation of the Label Propagation algorithm [5] to distributed and time-varying graphs that MANETs are. A key novel component of CLAN is local rules for community rediscovery as the network evolves. CLAN also uses a weighted version of the network topology where the weights are defined using a novel notion of social entropy to promote stability of communities. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that CLAN is quick to converge, incurs minimal overhead and is as effective as centralized approaches to temporal community detection. We also demonstrate how the temporal community structure can be used by designing a hierarchical routing protocol that achieves the delivery ratio of the OLSR [6] routing protocol at a fraction of the overhead.
