Building energy monitoring to individual occupant's personal climate level has vast advantages added on to the present building management system. With Internet of things (IoT) as part of energy systems, it opens up a gateway of opportunities ahead to personalize energy monitoring. distributed wireless sensor network (WSN) to integrate with the EnergyPlus model has created an advanced building energy monitoring platform. the proposed building energy monitoring platform has the mean to estimate and predict the energy consumption of an individual in a space within the building (kWh per m(2)) and the type of building services like air-conditioning, lighting systems, etc. being utilized. Building-wide deployment of a low-cost WSN system to measure these building services' equivalent parameters, such as temperature, humidity, air pressure and illumination, are integrated into an EnergyPlus model being developed. this results in a more accurate estimation and prediction of the energy consumption within each individual space on top of the building energy measured by existing building management system. In addition, the sensor information helps building owner and tenants to better understand the well-being of the building, as well as, its indoor environmental quality and comfort level in a real-time format.

these networks provide large volumes of data in many different formats, resolution and scales. the data are of different types and character: from meteorological conditions to air quality and the concentrations of pollutants due to human activity, such as transportation or other industry-related actions. the work in this paper aims at increasing the interoperability and improving accessibility of data provided by sensor networks. To address this problem Geographic Information System (GIS) services, such as the sensor Observation Service (SOS), in conjunction with Representational State Transfer (RESTFul) architecture are used. A standard-based solution that increases interoperability is presented. It also allows for a better integration of data already published in different semi-structured formats in order to be used by various platforms (web or mobile). Finally, we apply this system in a use case as wildfire monitoring, so it offers determine the state of a wildfire.

In this paper we propose a cluster-based multi-channel scheduling algorithm for intra-cluster communications in Cognitive Radio sensor Networks (CRSNs) to avoid collisions between neighbor clusters. Since nodes having neighbor nodes out of their clusters may cause collisions between neighbor clusters, when transmitting in the same time slot on the same channel, the scheduling of each cluster cannot be established independently. We propose to fix in each cluster the channels used by nodes having conflicting nodes out of their clusters. this channel assignment is done by the cluster heads in a distributed way but according to the decreasing priority order of the clusters. then, each cluster head executes the scheduling algorithm independently. We evaluate the performance of this algorithm in terms of total number of time slots needed by all the nodes to transmit all their packets to the sink, energy consumption and transmission time interval.

Energy harvesting sensor nodes based on real nonvolatile processors are demonstrated to show the desirable characteristics of those systems, such as no battery, zero standby power, microsecond-scale sleep and wake-up time, high resilience to random power failures and fine-grained power management. Furthermore, we show its applications to a distributed moving object detection system, one of novel nonvolatile computing systems. © 2012 ACM.

the focus of this paper is targeted towards multi-cell dense LTE and LTE-Advanced networks, which are composed of multiple evolved Node B (eNodeB) co-existing in the same operating area and sharing the available radio resources. In such scenarios, momentous emphasis is given towards the techniques that take Inter-Cell Interference (ICI) into account while allocating the scarce radio resources. In this context, we propose solutions for the problem of joint power control and scheduling in the framework of Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) in the downlink of LTE OFDMA-based multi-cell systems. Two approaches are adopted to allocate system resources in order to achieve high performance: a centralized approach based on convex optimization and a semi-distributed approach based on non-cooperative game theory. the centralized approach needs a central controller to optimally allocate resources like in LTE CoMP (Coordinated Multipoint). In the semi-distributed approach, eNodeBs coordinate among each other for efficient resource allocation based on local knowledge conveyed by the X2 interface. It turns out that despite the lower complexity of the semi-distributed approach and its inherent adaptability, there is only a slight discrepancy of results among both approaches, which makes the distributed approach much more promising, in particular as a procedure of SON (Self Organized Network).

this paper presents an efficient technique for placement and routing of sensors/actuators and processing units in a grid network. the driver application that we present is a medical jacket which requires an extremely high level of robustness and fault tolerance. the power consumption of such jacket is another key technological constraint. Our proposed interconnection network is a mesh of wires. A jacket made of fabric and wires would be susceptible to accidental damage via tears. By modeling the tears, we evaluate the probability of having failures on every segment of wires in our mesh interconnection network. then we study two problems of placement and routing in the sensor networks such that the fault tolerance is maximized while the power consumption is minimized. We develop efficient integer linear programming (ILP) formulations to address these problems and perform both placement and routing simultaneously. this ensures that the solution is a lower bound for both problems. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed techniques on a variety of benchmarks.

Follow Me Cloud (FMC) concept has emerged as a promising technology that allows seamless migration of services according to the corresponding users' mobility. Meanwhile, Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new paradigm that permits to decouple the control and data planes of traditional network, and provides programmability and flexibility, allowing the network to dynamically adapt to changing traffic patterns and user demands. While the SDN implementations are gaining momentum, the control plane, however, is still suffering from scalability and performance concerns for a very large network. In this paper, we address these scalability and performance issues by introducing a novel SDN/Open Flow-based architecture and control plane framework tailored for mobile cloud computing systems and more specifically for FMC-based systems where mobile nodes and network services are subject to constraints of movements and migrations. Contrary to centralized approach with single SDN controller, our approach permits to distribute the SDN/OpenFlow control plane on a two-level hierarchical architecture: a first level with a global controller G-FMCC, and second level with several local controllers L-FMCC(s). thanks to our control plane framework and Network Function Virtualization concept (NFV), the L-FMCC(s) are deployed on-demand, where and when needed, depending on the global system load. Results obtained via analysis show that our solution ensures more efficient management of control plane, performances maintaining and network resources preservation.

In many applications such as precision agriculture (fruit tree plantation, olive groves) or environmental monitoring, wireless sensors are, very often, randomly scattered in the 3D area of interest. Such applications require full three-dimensional coverage. Undoubtedly, an initial random deployment does not achieve neither full coverage of the 3D area of interest, nor network connectivity. thus, a redeployment algorithm has to be introduced in order to ensure these two goals. Our contribution is the design of 3D-DVFA, a distributed deployment algorithm based on virtual forces in three dimensional wireless sensor networks where sensor nodes are assumed to be mobile and autonomous. We simulate its behavior with NS3. the extensive simulations results demonstrate the effectiveness of the 3D algorithm proposed that provides full 3D area coverage and network connectivity.

We address the received signal strength (RSS) based target localization problem in large-scale cooperative wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Using the noisy RSS measurements, we formulate the localization problem based on the maximum likelihood (ML) criterion. Although MLbased solutions have asymptotically optimal performance, the derived localization problem is non-convex. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a convex relaxation leading to second-order cone programming (SOCP) estimator, which can be solved efficiently by interior-point algorithms. Moreover, we investigate the case where target nodes limit the number of cooperating nodes by selecting only those neighbors with the highest RSS. this simple procedure can reduce the energy consumption of an algorithm in both communication and computation phase. Our simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms significantly the existing ones in terms of the estimation accuracy and convergence. Furthermore, the new approach does not suffer significant performance degradation when the number of cooperating nodes is reduced.
