We consider wireless real-time systems that execute computationally-intensive applications and must transmit packets over the network in a timely manner. Existing methods do not consider the importance (i.e., urgency) of a packet as perceived by end users in conjunction with energy consumption, real-time task deadlines, and packet deadlines, inadvertently causing packet priority inversion during transmissions and possibly starvation of some streams. We present an online holistic scheduling framework that explicitly considers packet importance to select packets to transmit and guarantee their deadline requirements using both packet and energy-aware job assignment and scheduling. Our framework is applicable to wireless real-time systems equipped with either a single processor or a multicore system. Based on extensive simulations, we show that our proposed method allows for timely transmissions of the most important packets, which helps to control packet urgency, while saving processor(s) energy.

Most of the flash storage systems reclaim the space occupied by invalid data only when the available free space is low and a data writing request is being processed thereby may intermittently increase the time of carrying out a writing operation and decrease the system performance. For real-time applications, such passive space recycling not only results in tasks suffering long blocking time but also imposes great impact on the predictability of their timing behaviors. this paper presents an active mechanism to recycle invalidated space in flash storage system which, by periodically launching tasks to reclaim data space containing invalid data, can reduce the blocking incurred from space recycling as well as provide a more analysable recycling operation. the active space recycling mechanism can work well with the wear-leveling mechanism commonly required in flash storage management. In addition, the implementation requires no changes of its host file system. Simulation results show that the proposed space recycling mechanism has significant improvement on the worst case timing behaviors of write operations. © 2005 ieee.

this paper proposes SPLiT (Scalable Performance Library Tool) as the methodology to improve performance of applications on multicore processors, through CPU, and cache optimizations. SPLiT analyzes applications based on cycle counts, and cache misses, and predicts behavior of the applications according to the analysis. With these acquired knowledge on the target application, SPLiT improves CPU resource allocation determined by operating systems. SPLiT, and SPLiT library are designed to achieve resource optimizations based on the combination of hardware information collected by Operating System kernel, and software information collected by applications. Additionally, all the features of SPLiT are immediately available with the small modifications to the application source codes, and the modifications are basically to implant SPLiT library calls into the source code. this simple requirement diminishes programmers' difficulties for performance tuning of multicore applications. through empirical experiments, we validated the efficiency of SPLiT, and observed that performance of the web application was improved by 26%.

In this paper, we target at the direct-coupled solar energy powered multicore architectures that provide direct power supply between photovoltaic (PV) generation and the load without the adoption of battery. We present SolarTune, a real-time scheduling technique with load tuning for sporadic tasks on solar energy powered multicore systems. the objective is to frilly utilize the available solar energy while meeting the deadlines of tasks. To solve the problem, we first perform analysis and formulate the scheduling problem in each duration as an integer linear programming (ILP) model to obtain an optimal schedule. then we present a heuristic algorithm to dynamically refine the task scheduling based on the predictions of the availability of solar energy. We conduct experiments using real-world meteorological data across different geographic sites. the experimental results show that SolarTune can significantly improve the solar energy utilization ratio and reduce the number of deadline misses compared to the conventional task scheduler.

While the dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) techniques are efficient in reducing the dynamic energy consumption for the processor, varying voltage alone becomes less effective for the overall energy reduction as the static power is growing rapidly. On the other hand, Quality of Service (QoS) is also a primary concern in the development of today's pervasive computing systems. In this paper, we propose a dynamic approach to minimize the overall energy consumption for soft real-time systems while ensuring the QoS-guarantee. the QoS requirements are deterministically quantified with the window-constraints, which require that at least m out of each non-overlapped window of k consecutive jobs of a task meet their deadlines. Necessary and sufficient conditions for checking the feasibility of task sets with arbitrary service times and periods are developed to ensure that the window-constraints can be guaranteed in the worst case. And efficient scheduling techniques based on pattern variation and dynamic slack reclaiming extensions are proposed to combine the task procrastination and dynamic slowdown to minimize the energy consumption. In contrast to the previous leakage-aware slack reclaiming work which never scales the job speed below the critical speed, we will show that it can be more energy efficient to reclaim the slack with speed lower than the critical speed when necessary. through extensive simulations, our experiment results demonstrate that the proposed techniques significantly outperformed the previous research in both overall and idle energy reduction.

this paper presents an energy-aware electronic design automation (EDA) methodology for the system-level exploration of hierarchical storage organizations, focusing mainly on data-intensive signal processing applications. Starting from the high-level behavioral specification of a given application, several memory management tasks are addressed in a common algebraic framework, using data-dependence analysis techniques similar to those used in modern compilers. Within this memory management software system, the designer can explore different algorithmic specifications functionally equivalent, by computing their minimum storage requirements. the system can perform an exploration based on energy consumption of signal assignments to the off-and on-chip memory layers, followed by a storage-efficient mapping of signals to the physical memories. the last phase of the methodology is an exploration approach for energy-aware banking of the on-chip memory, which takes into account both the static and dynamic energy consumption.

As computers and Internet technology advance, many time-dependent applications, such as mobile navigation and online gaming, are emerging. time-dependent applications are associated with a pair of time-dependent functions representing accrued gain at the time when tasks complete or accrued cost when tasks fail to complete, respectively. For systems that provide time-dependent services, the optimization goal is to maximize the system profit when both potential gain and potential cost exist for each request the system accepts. this paper presents two scheduling algorithms, prediction-based highest gain density first (PHGDF) and iterative PHGDF (iPHGDF) scheduling algorithms with the objective to maximize the system's total accrued profit. Simulation results provide clear evidence that, with respect to the system total accrued profit, the proposed PHGDF and iPHGDF algorithms have advantages over other commonly used scheduling algorithm, such as the Earliest Deadline First (EDF), the Generic Utility Scheduling (GUS) and the Profit and Penalty aware scheduling (PP-aware) algorithms.

In order to enhance OS security, most of people use security patches to fix the vulnerabilities of the OS. However, the security patches may also incur vulnerabilities. these vulnerabilities are generated since most OSes has a lot of functionalities and their functionalities are very complex to manage the entire source code manually. Moreover, in order to use the security patch, rebooting the system is required. Some of systems such as enterprise servers and embedded systems cannot accept the rebooting. therefore, we propose an external integrity checking system to enhance the OS security. the external integrity checking system and a target OS run on a hypervisor simultaneously, therefore, their operations do not affect each other. In addition, the integrity checking system is generated automatically with invariants. therefore, the possibility of inserting vulnerabilities into the system is as small as possible, and the system can cover a lot of vulnerabilities.

the Web has become pervasive. this has led to a paradigm shift, where applications live on the Web as services, where they can be accessed using terminals of different types, such as regular computers, mobile devices, game consoles, and so on. the ability to dynamically combine data, code and other content from numerous web sites all over the world, and the ability to instantly publish services worldwide has opened up entirely new possibilities for software development. Such applications, referred to as mashups, are content aggregates that leverage the power of the Web to support instant, worldwide sharing of content. Unfortunately, for various reasons, the browser that is commonly used as the run-time environment of mashups is inadequate for hosting complex applications, in particular when considering embedded devices and subsystems that are not readily available in the web. In this paper, we introduce a runtime environment, intended for embedded devices, that is able to host mashups that combine data from the web and device specific peripherals, thus enabling context-aware mashups. As an example, we describe a mashup that combines map data from an existing map service and GPS data available from an external system.

A key issue to reduce the number of deadline misses and improve energy savings in embedded real-time systems is to accurately estimate the execution time of tasks as a function of the processor frequency. Existing execution time models however, use to rely on off-line analysis or on the assumption that the memory access time (quantified in processor cycles) is constant, ignoring that memory system components are not affected by the processor clock. In this paper, we propose the Processor-Memory (Proc-Mem) model, which dynamically predicts the execution time of the applications running in a multicore processor when varying the processor frequency. Proc-Mem approach is compared with a typical Constant Memory Access time model, namely CMAT. Results show that the deviation of Proc-Mem is always lower than 6% with respect to the measured execution time, while the deviation of the CMAT model always exceeds 30%. these results turn in important energy savings for a similar number of deadline misses. Energy savings are on average by 22.9%, and up to 47.8% in the studied mixes.
