Interpolation is the main bottleneck in AVS real-time high definition video encoder for its high memory bandwidth and large calculation complexity caused by the new coding features of variable block size and 4-tap filter. In this paper, a high performance VLSI architecture of interpolation supporting AVS Baseline@L4 is presented. Vertical redundant data reuse, horizontal redundant data reuse and sub-pixel data reuse schemes are presented to reduce memory bandwidth and processing cycle. the separated 1-D interpolation filters are used to improve throughput and hardware utilization. the proposed design is implemented on FPGA with operating frequency of 150MHz and can support 1080p (1920×1080)/30fps AVS real-time encoder. It is a useful intellectual property design for real-time high definition video application.

Frequency power converters and arc furnaces generate a wide spectrum of harmonic components and interharmonics. Representation of signals in time and frequency domain has been of interest in signal processing areas for many years, especially taking in the limelight time-varying nonstationary signals. Standard tools of harmonic analysis based on the Fourier transform assume that only harmonics are present and the periodicity intervals are fixed, while periodicity intervals in the presence of interharmonics are variable and very long. In this paper the Prony method was tested for this purpose and a novel approach for the analysis of power nonstationary signals, based on the "subspace" methods, is proposed: the "rootMusic" harmonic retrieval method which is an example of high-resolution eigenstructure-based methods. Both methods can allow an accurate and useful estimation of power quality indices as well as of the interharmonic frequencies with their changes in time. this paper, which reports the theoretical aspects of these methods, is a companion paper to a paper of the same title, Part II, in which the numerical aspects of the proposed spectrum estimation methods are analysed using nonstationary voltage and current waveforms in a supply system of a DC arc furnace.

this paper introduces TacForce, a camera-based tactile sensor for robotic skin. TacForce utilizes affordable high-resolution cameras and robust image-processing techniques to provide real-time information on the three-dimensional surface shape and force distribution applied to its soft skin surface. the sensor's skin, composed of soft, elastic materials, features an array of markers tracked by a simple stereo camera. the movement of these markers in three dimensions is mapped to external forces using the finite element method (FEM). the silicone skin is cost-effective, easy to fabricate, and adaptable to various applications through adjustments to its shape and size. TacForce offers a simple, scalable structure suitable for a wide range of robot parts and tactile devices.

there is an increasing demand for computing systems composed by heterogeneous computers, connected by different types of networks, and that allow for accessing a wide range of services in a seamless way. Some of those computers are mobile or embedded and have limited resources, and can be overloaded when trying to handle their users demands. then it is not possible to ensure a proper behaviour of the running applications. this can be an important problem when dealing with critical events in healthcare, home surveillance, or forest monitoring. Resource reservation is a valid basis for handling this issue. It allows for guaranteeing a certain resource share for applications that are important for the proper behavior of a given system. this paper describes an implementation of a resource management component and its integration in the Linux kernel. this piece of software has allowed to assign CPU budgets to standard Java threads, which is an important facility, given the widespread of this programming language. this implementation has been validated on service oriented middleware, where relevant services are executed by thread with guaranteed budget, to improve its predictability.

Currently the development of embedded software managing hardware devices that fulfills industrial constraints (safety, real time constraints) is a very complex task. To allow an increased reusability between projects, generic device drivers have been developed in order to be used in a wide range of applications. Usually the level of gener-icity of such drivers require a lot of configuration code, which is often generated. However, a generic driver requires a lot of configuration and need more computing power and more memory needs than a specific driver. this paper presents a more efficient methodology to solve this issue based on a formal modeling of the device and the application. Starting from this modeling, we use well-known game theory techniques to solve the driver model synthesis problem. the resulting model is then translated into the actual driver embedded code with respect to an implementation model. By isolating the model of the device, we allow more reusability and interoperability between devices for a given application, while generating an application-specific driver.

Nano-technology is an important research area in 21st century. there are many relevant applications in civil industry, such as scientific measurement and high technology. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) opens a new window to the nano-world. It features high resolution in vacuum, gases, or liquid operational environments, and has now become a widely used tool in the sectors of, for example, nano measurement and manipulation, biotech and medical testing, etc. Many top research institutions in the world have put a lot of effort into this area. this talk will focus on the AFM technological evolutions and application challenges from past to future. First, a quick introduction is given about AFM classification and basic principle for audiences to easily understand this type of technology. Next, contemporary applications of AFM in industry and biological sciences are presented. Furthermore, reviews of state-of-the-art of AFM in nowadays technological developments such as hardware upgrades, scan method promotions, and control improvements are revealed, which also includes some research results of our laboratory. Finally, in the rest of time the talk will discuss the technological challenges of the next generation AFM, which are able to satisfy the industrial requirements on the future probable applications. In summary, a systematic illustration of the AFM classification, operational principle, contemporary applications, technological developments, and future application challenges will be offered in this talk.

the exploration of high EEG electrode densities is of great interest in current BCI research. this paper investigates the neural representation of high-level hand gestures using ultra-high-density EEG electrodes. the EEG of two subjects was recorded using a total of 352 and 256 electrodes placed over the sensorimotor cortex, respectively. Subject S1 performed motor execution, and subject S2 performed motor imagery of the hand gestures. Band power features for the mu (8-12 Hz) and beta (13–30 Hz) frequency bands were exploited for pairwise classifications for the respective gestures using a linear SVM. Topography plots were generated using the reconstructed head models from T1-weighted MRI scans of both subjects. the spatiotemporal dynamics from the topographies allow a detailed understanding of the associated brain patterns. Subjects S1 and S2 achieved a mean classification accuracy of 72.7% and 71.3% across all classification pairs, respectively. the classification of the gestures “rock” vs. “scissors” resulted in the highest classification accuracy for both subjects, with 78.9% for subject S1 and 73.9% for subject S2 on average. Classification models based on electrode subsets reflecting the 10–10 and the extended 10–10 systems performed worse than the ultra-high-density EEG system resulting in a decrease of about 10 and 8% (on median). the implementation of feature reduction algorithms, as well as real-time BCI feedback, are expected to enhance performance in future applications.

Tiny, wireless, sensors embedded in a large number of Internet-capable devices-smart phones, cameras, cars, toys, medical instruments, home appliances and energy meters-can generate an enormous volume of small bits of data such as temperature and humidity readings, GPS co-ordinates and energy usage. the real value of this data lies in its analysis, which can lead to significant insights and actions that enhance the health of our planet and its populations. We have developed a web-based infrastructure called *** for storing, sharing, searching, visualizing and analyzing data from heterogeneous devices and facilitating easy interaction amongst devices and end users through an open, REST-based API. this demonstration starts off with a brief walkthrough of the *** portal as we describe its data abstractions, APIs and different views, e.g. dashboard view for monitoring the health of different sensor datastreams and their access permissions and map view for geographical search. Next we show the platform's visualization capabilities, in particular LivePlots-interactive plots of different types which can be embedded into web-based applications hosted elsewhere and are rendered using the latest data from our service each time that external webpage is reloaded. We discuss data-centric collaborations and social interactions made possible by features such as tagging, searching and sharing with fine-grained privacy controls. We demonstrate notifications that are automatically generated when sensor data meeting user-specified criteria is inserted. these notifications allow the composition of ?mashups? of heterogeneous sensors and actuators (e.g. a humidity sensor from one vendor controlling a sprinkler system from another). Finally, we present our early explorations into reprogramming and remote management of devices.

During the computation stage of parallel seismic applications, it is usually a common need for a large amount of processes to concurrently read a large seismic dataset file from Cluster File systems (CFS). When there are a great many of processes, for example, more than 100 processes, all processes reading from CFS will impose a huge pressure on the I/O subsystem of CFS. In this circumstance, the aggregated read bandwidth will decrease, which leads to that each process must spend a long time waiting for data to enter the computation stage. thus, the efficiency of parallel seismic applications is affected severely. To solve this problem, we propose a concurrent read framework based on bit-torrent algorithm called BTCache. In BTCache, the whole dataset is divided into data blocks logically. Data blocks that are read by each process from CFS will be cached by a multi-level LRU-Cache constructed by user buffer, memory, and local disks on each computing node. then, the bittorrent algorithm is used to transfer data among processes, so the pressure imposed on CFS will be reduced and the aggregated read bandwidth can be improved. Experimental results on a large high-performance computing cluster using 150 computing nodes show that BTCache can improve read bandwidth by 3.64 times compared with the concurrent read method.

Modern strides in autonomous vehicles and embedded advanced driver assistant part systems(ADAS) have forced the need of an efficient in addition to accurate system intended for clear road lane as in addition to vehicle detection. For road lane detection, this study introduces a new proposal through the combination of YOLOv8 (You Only Look Once), and YOLO for vehicle detection, creating a complete package for road understanding and navigation. To achieve accurate road lane detection, YOLOv8, which is the fastest and most accurate model to date, is used to ensure that it can keep track of these lanes in real-time with consistent accuracy whenever the camera is placed under various scenarios with insufficient lighting and occlusions as well. At the same time it uses YOLO for vehicle detection, which improves the recognition and interpretation of the presence and motion of vehicles in real time. the system uses Streamlit, which is an open-source app framework for Machine Learning and Data Science projects to provide an intuitive user experience. Finally, we build an interface to provide results of lane and vehicle detection in realtime manner to allow ease of monitoring and evaluation on the overall system. the combination of YOLOv8 and YOLO with Streamlit provides a powerful, scalable, and deployable solution for practical computer vision applications. Combining well established object detection algorithms with a simplified deployment platform, the proposed system tackles some of the hardest and time consuming areas of autonomous driving. the goal is to make significant contributions to both the safety and efficiency of autonomous vehicles and pave the way for further inevitable advances in ADAS.
