In this paper, we discuss high-resolution target sensing through the exploitation of multi-frequency sparse arrayprocessing. By using simple design examples of a three-element sensorarray coupled withthe sensing signals consisting of three well-designed frequencies, we provide insights to achieve a high number of consecutive lags, unique lags, and array aperture. Such multi-frequency sensorarrays with reduced number of sensors can be attractive in many applications to achieve effective sensing with a low cost.

this paper develops a time reversal moving target detector based on array antennas. Time reversal utilizes the multipath effect by retransmitting the received signal containing the Doppler shift of the moving target. Two detectors are derived in both conventional and time reversal scenarios, respectively. the Monte Carlo results show that the time reversal detector significantly improves the target detection probability in multipath environments compared withthe conventional detector. the increase of multipath number is helpful to improve the detection probability of time reversal detector.

Integrated wireless communications and radar detections have so far mainly relied on phased-array (PA) antennas with only considering the beampatterns in angle domain. By applying the frequency diverse array (FDA) into radar and communications (RadComm) systems, a compact dual-functional structure of joint PA and FDA is designed. Based on the built joint PA and FDA channel models, different beamformer designs are proposed by jointly optimizing the signal-to-interference-noises of the communications and radar. Numerical simulations demonstrate the performances of both communications and the radar withthe proposed approaches are over than that of the conventional PA RadComm systems.

We present an intelligent sensorarray-based joint radar-communication system which exploits chance constrained programming to develop a robust beamforming design. Probabilistic chance constraints are introduced for the communication operation where the communication objectives are achieved with a desired success rate in the presence of communication channel uncertainties. the chance constraint optimization is then relaxed to form a deterministic and convex problem by employing the statistical profile of the communication channels. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed strategy.

We consider gridless direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of much more targets than the number of physical sensors through the exploitation of multi-frequency sparse array design and processing which increase the degrees of freedom as more frequency components are used. A modified sensor interpolation technique is developed to accurately estimate the signal covariance matrix using very few snapshots, thereby eliminating the requirement of a large number of snapshots as in conventional different coarray-based DOA estimation. Simulation results demonstrate high-resolution gridless DOA estimation capability of more targets than the number of physical sensors.

Increasing the number of sources to be processed from a given array of sensors is an important problem in sensorarraysignalprocessing and of interest to many researchers. this problem has also been tackled withthe virtual array based approach where the covariance and cumulant lags provide a virtual sensor. Here, an important parameter which affects the parameter estimation accuracy and latency is weight function. the weight function is defined as the frequency of occurrence of each virtual sensor in the virtual array. We provide the close-form expression of virtual array corresponding to linear array. We have also analytically evaluated the weight function of virtual array and have also studied the effect of the weight function on parameter estimation. Simulation results show the parameter estimation accuracy is significantly improve with high weight function.

Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is an interesting research topic with various applications. Existing algorithms provide superior estimation performance, at the cost of accurate quantified measurements. In this paper, we stress the problem of 2D DOA estimation for uniform rectangular array using one-bit measurements. the relationship between the covariance matrices of one-bit measurement and that of the accurately quantified measurement is analyzed in detail, from which we find the existing tensor algorithm can be directly applied. As a result, a one-bit parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) estimator is proposed. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

this paper discusses the maximum number of sources when their direction of arrivals (DOAs) are estimated by the method of direction estimation (MODE), and presents a modified version of MODE that can estimate more number of sources than that by the original MODE. It is well-known that M-element array can basically estimate up to (M - 1) DOAs, however the application of MODE may reduce up to M/2 DOAs because of its computation procedure. We propose a novel DOA estimation method by modifying MODE to employ peak-search of the primary eigenvector beam patterns instead of the null-search in the original MODE. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated through computer simulation.
