Transmission line parameter is important for obtaining power network structure, generating power system node admittance matrix or impedance matrix to calculate power flow, calculating short-circuit current, and setting relaying protection devices. But actually, transmission line parameters applied in power system are mostly experience values or offline measuring values provided by manufacturers, they may quite different from real parameters. this will influence the precision of power system analysis and calculation. this paper studies online calculation methods of transmission line parameters based on phasor and sampling value, it can calculate positive sequence parameters and also negative sequence-zero sequence parameters to improve the accuracy of fault analysis and relay protection settings. Different types of transmission line models are built by PSCAD to test and verify the calculation methods, results show that the proposed methods for transmission line parameters online calculation have high accuracy and reliability, they can provide reliable basis for power flow calculation, protection setting, operation reliability and safety of power grid.

the standard IEC 61850 contributes the manufacturers and the end users. But it also makes many obstacles to the modification of the conventional substation. this paper presents a scheme which modifies an in-service conventional substation gradually to a modern substation which conforms to IEC 61850 standards. the procedure of the modification is divided into three stages. During the first stage, all the preparations have been finished. All the configurations and joint tests have been done before shipment. the secondary stage is to construct the substation network. New Human Machine Interface (HMI) and communication gateway will replace the old ones. they simultaneously support protocol of the existing system and IEC 61850 standards. the third stage is the modification of the bay level devices. the old cabinets and the cables out of the cabinets are kept. the inner IEDs are replaced. the connections between the IEDs and the cabinets also need to be re-arranged. the modification of bay can be done one by one according to the overhaul plan. the process is stable and secure, and it won't affect the normal operation of the substation.

In order to validate the relay model, simulations were carried out using a simplified electrical power system whose parameters were obtained from a real system. the results reveal the advantages of using this type of modeling, since it provides a closed loop simulation, thereby one can evaluate the behavior of the power system against the protection operation, as well as the protection performance for the different powersystems operational conditions.
