Geometric property estimation of the scattered point data is a key task in reverse engineering. A common approach is to estimate the local surface geometric properties, such as normal vectors and curvatures, at each point by locally fitting a low order parametric polynomial surface to a neighborhood of its nearest points. However existing parametric surface methods do not always achieve satisfactory estimates because of theoretical and practical reasons. Motivated by improving geometric properties estimation we propose a novel approach based on local quadric surface fitting. Experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.

Because current design rationale systems are not demonstrated the value of the approach in practice due to lack of the design rationale knowledge evaluation. In this paper, we present a new design rationale knowledge evaluation method which is to measure the design rationale knowledge comprehensive value. In this method, we also characterizes the design rationale knowledge value from four perspectives, and the method can provide object metric and selection basis for the design rationale knowledge reuse during the product design process. Partial design process of the bending die is taken as an example to verify the feasibility and validity of the proposed method.

Nowadays, many commercial CAD systems support history-based, constraint-based and feature-based modeling. Unfortunately, most systems fail during the re-evaluation phase when various kind of topological changes occur. this issue is known as ''persistent naming" which refers to the problem of identifying entities in an initial parametric model and matching them in the re-evaluated model. Most works in this domain focus on the persistent naming of atomic entities such as vertices, edges or faces. But very few of them consider the persistent naming of aggregates like shells (connected set of faces). We propose in this paper a complete ftamework for extending a persistent naming model of atomic entities in order to identify and match any kind of shells based on their underlying topology.

the study of automobile styling is one of the difficult problems in the field of automobile design. Research on the automobile styling from aesthetics is the main motivation of industrial design research. this paper depicts the process and pattern of automobile styling design adopting feature based method in a cognitive approach.. the experiment designed to acquiring the feature knowledge about design process have been carried out, using protocol analysis and sketch analysis which can detect the cognition and thinking in the design process. Based on the results of the experiment, the analysis was made from three aspects: the meaning of feature, the cognition mode and the styling design process: then, a model of feature representation is proposed which consists of the-feature library and the feature manipulating rules. On the basis of the model, a computeraided styling (CAS) system is developed which can aid designers in automobile styling design.
