Progress in AI has brought about new approaches for designing products via co-creative human-computer interaction. In architecture, interior design, and industrial design, computational methods such as evolutionary algorithms support the designer's creative process by revealing populations of generated design solutions in a parametric design space. However, the benefits and shortcomings of such algorithms for designers are not yet fully understood. this paper reports the in-depth, in-situ and longitudinal experiences of one industrial designer using an interactive evolutionary algorithm in a non-trivial creative product design task. Our study sheds light on the intricate interaction between algorithm, human designer and their environment. It identifies, amongst others, the algorithm's contributions to design inspiration and to overcoming fixation. We contribute concrete proposals for the future study of co-creative AI in design exploration and creative practice.

Graphic design (GD) artefacts aim to attract people's attention before any forward objectives. thus, one of the goals of GD is frequently finding innovative aesthetics that stand out over competing design artefacts (such as other books covers in a store or other posters on the street). However, as GD is increasingly being democratised and broadly shared through social media, designers tend to adopt trendy solutions, lacking disruptive and catchy visual features. Evodesigner aims to assist the exploration of innovative graphic design solutions by using an automatic evolutionary approach to evolve the design of a number of text, shapes, and image elements inside two-dimensional canvases (pages). To enable the collaboration human-machine, the process has been integrated into Adobe indesign, so human designers and Evodesigner may alternately edit and evolve the same design projects, using the same desktop-publishing software. In this paper, an overview of the proposed system is presented along with the experimental setup and results accomplished so far on an evolutionary engine developed. the results suggest the viability of the development made in this first iteration of the system, which aims to reinterpret existing layouts in an unexpected manner.

When we think about the meaning of a city, we all somehow have an idea of what it means, but we can't have a clear image about the city. For that reason, we have to look for some references about those cities that we have seen, in order to be able to build a closer image of reality. In other words, to be recognised, a city needs to have references that are well known by everyone. For example, how can we talk about Paris without remembering the famous Eiffel Tower? How can we talk about London without linking it to the image of the Big Ben? through this article, we aim to describe how cities are recognised nowadays. What icons are associated with them, what monuments or works of art make them highlight and differentiate one from the other, promoting the local linked with the capacity to develop the place. We know that the use of the internet and the online uploading of images and photos, which have been taken by several persons, are now available on the internet and in platforms such as Instagram. these images are taken by people who somehow want to show a little bit of themselves and of moments which they perceive as being special. For this reason, photos with urban spaces of cities, streets, monuments andworks of art are currently one of the great scenarios chosen for the famous selfies or photographs in the form of digital albums, which are saved in the profiles of each person in the social networks. the cities strongly take advantage of this free publicity to attract more and more visitors and tourists, social networks are now, more than ever, a platform for communication and dissemination of images, of cities and of moments or events, which are based at the city [7]. the urban scenario becomes evident across a large number of personal profiles existing in Instagram and other online platforms. Context analysis is an essential condition in the development of a product or service. Understanding the context in which the system is used (characteristics of users, tasks, technical and physical environment), but also the cultural context (physical environment, historical, social, and cultural factors), are part of the activities of the Human-Centered design process. Nowadays, due to the accessibility and improvement of technology, experience based on virtual reality, can be used to provide immersive experiences that absorbs and awakens the user's interest in cultural aspects in a playful but also didactic way. In this context, the present study sought to assess and compare the user experience through the development of an immersive virtual reality game experience. the goal of this study is to evaluate the user experience of participants from Portugal (13 potential tourists) and from Sao Tome Island (18 local inhabitants) in a 3D VR environment prototype of a traditional hostel, with a beach landscape view. For interaction in VR, we measure participants through a presence questionnaire. For emotional responses, we used a scale of valence and arousal from Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM). the compared results reveal that the VR prototype provided a high level of immersion in both samples. However, the data from control factors reveal that the sample from Sao Tome had more interaction problems. Regarding the emotional reactions (SAM), the compare results reveal that the user experience was emotionally positive with high values of pleasure for both samples. the data from arousal, indicate that the participants from Portugal were calm, and from Sao Tome are very excited (Arousal average Portugal = 4.5;Arousal average Sao Tome = 7.3) In conclusion, the 3D VR environment prototype was able to engage the participants with high levels of pleasure and provide interactive experiences. However, the control factor and arousal data reveal differences between the two samples that

Exploring the potentialities of artificial intelligence (AI) in the world of arts is fundamental to understand and define how this technology is shaping our creativity. We propose a system that generates emotionally expressive paintings from EEG signals. the emotional information, encoded from the signals through a graph neural network, is inputted to a generative adversarial network (GAN), trained on a dataset of paintings. the design and experimental choices at the base of this work rely on the understanding that emotions are hard to define and formalize. Despite this, the proposed results witness an interaction between an AI system and a human, capable of producing an original and artistic re-interpretation of emotions. these results have a promising potential for AI technologies applied to visual arts.

People with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) suffer from recurring unwanted thoughts (called obsessions) that drive them to do certain actions repetitively (called compulsions). People with OCD feels stuck in a stressful cycle of obsessions and compulsions. there are two approaches to diagnosing and assessing people with OCD. the first one is conducted in the doctor's office. the second one is conducted inside a special-purpose room that is typically setup in the hospital. this second environment is constructed using virtual and augmented reality. Both approaches are challenging with difficulties such as the high cost and stigma of therapy. Fortunately, there is a third approach that uses specialized computer games to achieve the same goals. this third approach has not been researched yet in the context of OCD detection and measurement. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a serious game that can provoke OCD and then measure the intensity of the resulting obsessions and compulsions. this new game is based on the concept of cognitive gameplay. As such, the interaction between the proposed game design elements leads to the emergence of different cognitive processes, such as attention, memory, and planning, which are essential in the study of OCD. the proposed game design elements have been reviewed and approved by two psychiatrists.

this paper presents an efficient design of microwave filters by means of geometry optimization using shape deformation techniques. this design procedure allows for modelling complex 3D geometries which can be fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM). Shape deforming operations are based on radial basis function (RBF) interpolation and are integrated into an electromagnetic field simulator based on the 3D finiteelement method (FEM). the optimization controls two sets of design variables, i.e. the geometrical parameters of the structure and the parameters that determine the shape deformation. this approach provides great design flexibility at marginal additional cost since shape deformations require very little computational effort. A complete design procedure of a Ku-band RX waveguide bandpass filter is shown to verify this approach. the designed filter is fabricated with selective laser melting (SLM) technology. Measurements are presented in comparison with simulation.

computer-aided translation (CAT), the use of software to assist a human translator in the translation process, has been proven to be useful in enhancing the productivity of human translators. Autocompletion, which suggests translation results according to the text pieces provided by human translators, is a core function of CAT. there are two limitations in previous research in this line. First, most research works on this topic focus on sentence-level autocompletion (i.e., generating the whole translation as a sentence based on human input), but word-level autocompletion is under-explored so far. Second, almost no public benchmarks are available for the autocompletion task of CAT. this might be among the reasons why research progress in CAT is much slower compared to automatic MT. In this paper, we propose the task of general word-level autocompletion (GWLAN) from a real-world CAT scenario, and construct the first public benchmark(1) to facilitate research in this topic. In addition, we propose an effective method for GWLAN and compare it with several strong baselines. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed method can give significantly more accurate predictions than the baseline methods on our benchmark datasets.

this article discusses several world-wide problems in the communication between the experts, such as harmonization of conceptual apparatus and translation between traditional languages as major barriers for effective and rapid complex systems’ design process. the authors of the article state that in modern, especially post-covid world has been formed the conditions that encourage the development of a new planned language of international communication for experts, which, on one hand, would help to overcome the problems of translation, coordination of the conceptual apparatus, raising the effectiveness of communication between experts, and on the other hand, to make a breakthrough in the evolution of software development. the authors consider the initiative in the creation of such a language may come from experts and the business environment, especially from the global innovative IT companies, for which such language would greatly simplify the writing of software as would replace or simultaneously play a role the programming language. © 2022, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Real-time object detection has always been a broad, dynamic, and challenging domain within computer vision. Image localization entails identifying a singular object within an image, while object detection involves the task of locating multiple objects within an image. this process involves recognizing various semantic entities of digital photography and videos. Real-time detection finds extensive applications such as object tracking, video surveillance, pedestrian identification, people counting, autonomous-driving vehicles, facial detection, sports ball tracking, and more. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are commonly employed in conjunction with OpenCV (Open-Source computer Vision), a coding function collection engineered for real-time computer vision, to facilitate object detection.
