the presented design framework stems from verifiable formal specifications as a launching paradigm, from Internet-based distributed HW/SW components with multicast as an architectural paradigm, and from reusability paradigm supporting all phases of the design process ranging from specification to implementation and testing. this paper presents concepts of a specification-driven design framework aiming at IEEE 1451-based embedded distributed systems that consist of smart components connected to Internet. It deals with an integrated networking framework stemming from the IEEE 1451.1 object-based networking model, complemented by the Internet Protocol (IP) multicast that mediates efficient and unified access from Internet to distributed components. the kernel of the paper deals with tools and techniques aiming to prop specification and design life cycle phases of applications under development.

An Ad-hoc Mobile Cloud (AMC) is a new computing model that allows sharing computing power of multiple mobile devices. For a diverse group of individuals that employ such computing model, in an ad-hoc manner, secure peer-to-peer communication becomes very important. Using private or pairwise keys to secure such communication is preferable to public-keys because of computation and energy requirements [1]. Withthe advent of sensor enabled mobile devices, a protocol (SekGens) that uses sensor data to generate pairwise keys on demand has been proposed [2]. To work successfully SekGens requires devices to be closely located and becomes infeasible for devices situated multiple hops away. SekGens is also expensive in computation and slow in key generation. In this paper, we investigate how to enable devices in an AMC to establish pairwise keys. We propose an efficient solution which tries to reduce the number of executions of SekGens in the AMC, and establishes pairwise keys between nodes multiple hops away by distributing parts of the key on multiple routing paths. Our results show a reduction of up to 75% in the number of SekGens required to establish keys in an AMC, when compared to a naive approach.

distributed concurrency control has been implemented by representing in-progress transactions as simulated objects, called transaction objects, that use normal message passing facilities. the implementation of an optimistic mechanism has been completed using transaction objects and a two-phase locking mechanism has been designed. the tradeoffs made and lessons learned, dealing with transactions both on objects and as objects, are discussed.

Apache Hadoop is a widely used distributedcomputing framework and its file system is Hadoop distributed File System (HDFS), which assumes that DataNodes in a system are homogeneous in nature. When a cloud system scales up, DataNodes are very likely to become heterogeneous. thus, extensive research has been placed on improving performance for heterogeneous Hadoop systems, but little attention has been placed on security improvements. this motivates us to investigate a data allocation scheme called the Secure HDFS (SecHDFS) by integrating the secret sharing technique to improve storage security in a heterogeneous Hadoop system.
the cloud system plays a versatile role in the storage of vast data for future references. this includes the delivery of the computing sources that includes the servers with storage, various databases, networking syst...

A significant amount of energy is consumed to render high-level computation tasks in large scale cloud computing applications. the state-of-the-art energy saving techniques based on centralized job placement approaches reduce the reliability of operation due to a single point of failure. Moreover, the existing works do not consider energy consumption cost for communication devices and network appliances which contribute a lot. In this paper, we have proposed a mechanism for cluster formation based on network vicinity among the data servers. We have developed two distributed and localized intra-cluster and inter-cluster VM scheduling algorithms based on energy calculation, resource requirement and availability. Our proposed scheduling algorithms manage VMs to reduce the energy consumption of boththe servers and networking devices. Simulation results show that our proposed distributed VM scheduling algorithms can conserve significant amount of energy compared to state-of-the-art works.

A mechanism for synchronizing shared objects in a distributed system based on persistent, typed objects is presented. Synchronization constraints are expressed as separate control clauses and are factorized for a class of objects. the interference of this mechanism with inheritance and transactions is examined and solutions are proposed. Examples of synchronized objects are provided, and a semaphore-based implementation of the mechanism is described.

this paper proposes new variable regularized (VR) partial update (PU) affine projection algorithms (APAs) for distributed estimation over adaptive networks. they extend the conventional diffuse PU-APAs (Diff-PU-APAs) by imposing a regularization parameter to mitigate possible impairments, such as modeling uncertainties and lacking of excitation, and to deal with sparse channel estimation problems. In addition, the mean and mean square convergence performance of the proposed algorithms is studied, which provides convergence conditions of the proposed algorithms. the performance of the Diff-VR-PU-APAs is demonstrated by several computer simulations in distributed networks.

We consider distributed lighting control systems consisting of multiple asynchronous feedback controllers that adapt dimming of intelligent light source based on occupancy and illuminance value as measured by co-located occupancy and light sensors respectively. In an initial calibration step, the set-point at the light sensor for every controller is determined. Changes in reflectance due to factors like changes in occupancy and object characteristics modify the set-point, thus adversely affecting the illumination distribution from the lighting system. We propose a method for sensor set-point calibration and tracking and an associated lighting control algorithm. Initial calibration of set-points is achieved distributedly with light sources dimming according to a proposed sequence. We show that the proposed methods improve the illumination performance of the lighting system in event of reflectance changes.
