Urban sensing where mobile users continuously gather, process, and share location-sensitive sensor data (e.g., street images, road condition, traffic flow) is emerging as a new network paradigm of sensor information sharing in urban environments. the key enablers are the smart phones (e.g., iPhones and Android phones) equipped with onboard sensors (e.g., cameras, accelerometer, compass, GPS), and various wireless devices (e.g., WiFi and 2/3G). the goal of this paper is to design a scalable sensor networking platform where millions of users on the move can participate in urban sensing and share location-aware information using always-on cellular data connections. We propose a two-tier sensor networking platform called GeoServ where mobile users publish/access sensor data via an Internet-based distributed P2P overlay network. the main contribution of this paper is two-fold: a location-aware sensor data retrieval scheme that supports geographic range queries, and a location-aware publish-subscribe scheme that enables efficient multicast routing over a group of subscribed users. We prove that GeoServ protocols preserve locality and validate their performance via extensive simulations. © 2011 IEEE.

Online social networks (OSN) have attracted millions of users worldwide. this enormous success is not without problems;the centralized architectures of OSNs, storing the users' personal data, provides ample opportunity for privacy violation-a fact that has raised the demand for open, decentralized alternatives. We tackle the research question: is it possible to build a decentralized OSN over a social overlay, i.e., an overlay network whose links among nodes mirror the social network relationships among the nodes' owners? this paper provides a stepping stone to the answer, by focusing on the key OSN functionality of disseminating profile updates. Our approach relies on gossip protocols. We show that mainstream gossip protocols are inefficient, due to the properties that characterize social networks. We then leverage these very same properties towards our goal, by appropriately modifying gossip forwarding rules. Our evaluation, performed in simulation over a crawled real-world social network, shows that our protocols provide acceptable latency, foster load balancing across nodes, and tolerate churn.

Tracker-based peer-discovery is used in most commercial peer-to-peer content distribution systems, as it provides performance benefits compared to distributed solutions, and facilitates the control and monitoring of the overlay. But a tracker is a central point of failure, and its deployment and maintenance incur costs;hence an important question is how high tracker availability can be achieved at low cost. We investigate highly available, low overhead peer discovery, using independent trackers and a simple gossip protocol. this work is a step towards understanding the trade-off between the overhead and the achievable peer connectivity in highly available distributed overlay-management systems for peer-to-peer content distribution. We propose two protocols that connect peers in different swarms efficiently with a constant, but tunable, overhead. the two protocols, Random Peer Migration (RPM) and Random Multi-Tracking (RMT), employ a small fraction of peers in a torrent to virtually increase the size of swarms. We develop analytical models of the protocols based on renewal theory, and validate the models using both extensive simulations and controlled experiments. We illustrate the potential value of the protocols using large-scale measurement data that contains hundreds of thousands of public torrents with several small swarms, with limited peer connectivity. We estimate the achievable gains to be up to 40% on average for small torrents.

the study on protein-protein interactions is rapidly increasing;one of the most important findings of such study is the observation of hub proteins that play vital roles in all organisms. Identifying hub proteins may provide more information on essential proteins and lead to more efficient methods for their prediction. Here, we proposed a new network topological-based method for prediction of hub proteins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast). the method, HP3NN (Hub Protein Prediction using Probabilistic Neural Network), has successfully predicts the hub proteins with accuracy of 95% (sensitivity of 1.0 and specificity of 0.89). © 2011 IEEE.

Recent research agrees on the utility of fuzzy reasoning for the development of Decision Support Systems, which help to classify clinical data. In this context, methods or techniques for representing fuzzy terms in the form of interpretable fuzzy sets obtained from numerical data are strongly required. Typically, in medical settings, statistical data are available or can be obtained from rough data, in the form of probability distributions or likelihood functions. Until now, no theoretical approach was proposed for transforming a probability distribution into a likelihood view fuzzy set. In this paper, a method is developed which generalizes some existing approaches by giving them a theoretical justification. the method enables the construction of normal fuzzy sets, which can be chosen to have a triangular or trapezoidal shape where lateral edges are adapted depending on the input probability distribution. the method was assessed through its application to a simulated normal probability distribution and to real case study pertaining the classification of Multiple Sclerosis lesions. © 2011 IEEE.

In Peer-to-Peer storage and backup applications, large amounts of data have to be transferred between nodes. In general, recipient of data transfers are not chosen randomly from the whole set of nodes in the Peer-to-Peer networks, but they are chosen according to peer selection rules imposing several criteria, such as resource contributions, position in DHTs, or trust between nodes. Imposing too stringent restrictions on the choice of nodes that are eligible to receive data can have a negative impact on the amount of time needed to complete data transfer, and scheduling choices influence this result as well. We formalize the problem of data transfer scheduling, and devise means for calculating (knowing a posteriori the availability patterns of nodes) optimal scheduling choices;we then propose and evaluate realistic scheduling policies, and evaluate their overheads in transfer times with respect to the optimal. We show that allowing even a small flexibility in choosing nodes after the peer selection step results in large improvements on time to complete transfers, and that even simple informed scheduling policies can significantly reduce transfer time overhead.

the endeavor of this work is to study the impact of content popularity in a large-scale Peer-to-Peer network, namely KAD. Armed with the insights gained from an extensive measurement campaign, which pinpoints several deficiencies of the present KAD design in handling popular objects, we set off to design and evaluate an adaptive load balancing mechanism. Our mechanism is backward compatible with KAD, as it only modifies its inner algorithms, and presents several desirable properties: (i) it drives the process that selects the number and location of peers responsible to store references to objects, based on their popularity;(ii) it solves problems related to saturated peers, that entail a significant drop in the diversity of references to objects, and (iii) if coupled with an enhanced content search procedure, it allows a more fair and efficient usage of peer resources, at a reasonable cost. Our evaluation uses a trace-driven simulator that features realistic peer churn and a precise implementation of the inner components of KAD.

FADE service is a novel proposal of failure detection service based on REST paradigm for SOA environment. It is fully distributed service. Internal communication between FADE nodes can be realized using two communication protocols (gossip, Kademlia). It makes the nodes cooperation efficient and provide good level of scalability. the failure monitoring is based on accrual failure detector which provides flexibility in the context of different client expectations considering the speed and accuracy of detections.

the rise of the usage of digital devices and software services contribute to the increase of energy consumption of IT infrastructures. However, energy is still largely produced by limited resources. theore, optimizing and reducing its consumption is an economic and human necessity. Related works addressing energy optimization in computer science are widespread, but at the middleware layer, existing approaches are limited in their scope, adaptability and autonomous functioning. In this paper, we propose the foundations of a middleware architecture capable of handling various types of energy techniques and in different contexts. the distributed nature of our approach fits in a ubiquitous environment and covers the energy dimensions of both devices and software services. We also present the experimental results of a prototype implementing a subset of our proposed architecture. these results illustrate the potential of our energy-aware and autonomous approach.
