Guided-based systems are an alternative to natural language systems regarding the query construction method. We present a new solution that bridges the gap between these two types of systems by providing a hybrid interface which combines a graphical query interface for query construction with the correspondent natural language expression automatically generated by the system.

We describe a decision-support tool that optimizes the energy services of residential end-users by scheduling the operation of available distributed energy resources. We discuss the application of the tool to a 'smart' home case study and the solution to the resulting highly-dimensional scheduling problem. We then use the optimal schedules formulated by the tool to determine the value of the forecasted information used when the schedules are created. this is achieved by computing the additional costs avoided by the end-users due to the accuracy of the forecasts. We also demonstrate how to use the tool to derive robust schedules when the end-users are not certain on the magnitude of solar insolation, magnitude of energy service demands, availability of a plug-in hybrid vehicle as storage, and status of Critical Peak Pricing. the robust schedule is derived by maximizing the expected net benefit when the schedule is applied to all likely scenario outcomes. © 2010 IEEE.

Reliability is of great practical importance in distributed computing systems (DCSs) due to its immediate impact on system performance, i.e., quality of service. the issue of reliability becomes more crucial particularly for 'cost-conscious' DCSs like grids and clouds. Unreliability brings about additional-often excessive-capital and operating costs. Resource failures are considered as the main source of unreliability in this study. In this study, we investigate the reliability of workflow execution in the context of scheduling and its effect on operating costs in DCSs, and present the reliability for profit assurance (RPA) algorithm as a novel workflow scheduling heuristic. the proposed RPA algorithm incorporates a (operating) cost-aware replication scheme to increase reliability. the incorporation of cost awareness greatly contributes to efficient replication decisions in terms of profitability. To the best of our knowledge, the work in this paper is the first attempt to explicitly take into account (monetary) reliability cost in workflow scheduling. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we expose the results of an experimental study of acoustic properties of geminated consonants in Arabic language. We aim to determinate the temporal relationship between doubled consonant and the length of the vowel preceding them in a VCCV sequence. We compare these values with those measured for a VCV sequence. the results proved that the duration of simple consonant was sensibly different from the geminated one and same for the duration of the vowel preceding it. this work was undertaken to determinate the consonant duration characteristics to distinguish between a simple consonant and the geminated one in standard Arabic speech recognition.

Semantic search importance is growing each day as millions of people around the world need to obtain objective and concrete information. Guided-based systems are an alternative to natural language systems regarding the query construction method. However, current guided-based systems perform query validation only at a syntactical level. In this paper we address the semantic validation of queries in order to avoid redundancy and incoherency, therefore preventing the formulation of queries that do not make sense.

Information on the ratings of several features of items can be deployed to improve the quality of recommendations in recommender systems by incorporating them into similarity calculation between any two users or two items. However, the incremental information of these features has important impacts on recommender systems. For example, the complexity of similarity calculation is increased and more resources are consumed during the process for generating recommendations. In this paper, we propose several techniques by using this information to provide relevant recommendations and to reduce the complexity in similarity computation by directly matching between preferences of user and the strength of item features.

To facilitate the mobile users on ships for communication effectively in the offshore areas at sea, this paper proposes an integrated wireless networking system that is composed of mobile ad hoc network, cellular mobile communication network, and satellite mobile network. the overall system architecture and relevant network elements of the proposed system are described. the proposed system can help to reduce the network deployment cost and calling charge, support more terminal types, and provide the mobile users richer maritime services.

the continuous decentralisation and distribution of software, hardware, and human resources depends on a number of fundamental factors including the ability to provide desired Quality of Service (QoS) on resources assembled dynamically from enterprises, service providers and customer systems. Despite recent developments there are still many challenges in efficient information delivery and management services for distributed architectures. In this work we are particularly interested with the use of intelligent decision making mechanisms for the management of distributed architectures. Our research aims at designing and developing an intelligent decision making mechanism for the management, distribution, control and optimisation of systems resources within large distributed systems which allows dynamic system architecture configuration and provisioning.

A new paradigm to design computer systems called evolving reconfigurable architecture (ERA) is proposed. Several holistic principles are introduced and pursued through the ERA design cycle. We show how reconfigurability is implemented at the level of hardware elements and system software structure. Two new models: (i) graph-logic and (ii) control-data-predicate are introduced and applied in the ERA. We propose a scheme to transform sequential programs for execution on ERA, we also show that ERA has exceptional flexibility and reconfigurability and fits embedded, high performance and safety critical applications. Finally, further progress of ERA is discussed.
