Current solutions for hybrid Grid/Cloud computing have been developed to hide from heterogeneity, dynamism and distributed nature of resources. these solutions are however insufficient to support distributed applications with non trivial communication patterns among processes, or that are structured so as to reflect the organization of resources they are deployed onto. In this paper, we present a generic, adaptable and extensible component-based middleware that seamlessly enables a transition of non-trivial applications from traditional Grids to hybrid Grid-Cloud platforms. this middleware goes beyond the resolution of well known technical challenges for multi-domain computing, as it offers mechanisms to exploit the hierarchical, heterogeneous and dynamic nature of platforms. We validate its capabilities and versatility through two use cases: an Internet-wide federation of distributed Service Buses and a runtime supporting domain-decomposition HPC in heterogeneous computing environments using MPI-like programming. Performance results show the efficiency and usefulness of our middleware, and so contribute to promote research efforts geared towards flexible, on-demand IT solutions. Copyright 2010 ACM.

General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) is an emerging field of research which allows software developers to utilize the significant amount of computing resources GPUs provide for a wider range of applications. While traditional high performance computing environments such as clusters, grids and supercomputers require significant architectural modifications to incorporate GPUs, volunteer computing grids already have these resources available as most personal computers have GPUs available for recreational use. Additionally, volunteer computing grids are gradually upgraded by the volunteers as they upgrade their hardware, whereas clusters, grids and supercomputers are typically upgraded only when replaced by newer hardware. As such, MilkyWay@Home's volunteer computing system is an excellent testbed for measuring the potential of large scale distributed GPGPU computing across a large number of heterogeneous GPUs. this work discusses the implementation and optimization of the MilkyWay@Home client application for both Nvidia and All GPUs. A 17 times speedup was achieved for double-precision calculations on a Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 card, and a 109 times speedup for double-precision calculations on an ATI HD5870 card, compared to the CPU version running on one core of a 3.0 GHz AMD Phenom(tm)II X4 940. Using single-precision calculations was also evaluated which further increased performance 6.2 times for ATI card, and 7.8 times on the Nvidia card but with some loss of accuracy. Modifications to the BOINC infrastructure winch enable CPU discovery and utilization are also discussed. the resulting software enabled MilkyWay@Home to use GPU applications for a significant increase in computing power, at the time of this publication approximately 216 teraflops, which would place the combined power of these GPUs between the 11th and 12th fastest supercomputers in the world(1).

A distributed, hierarchical information service for computer networks might use several service instances, located in different layers. A distributed directory service, for example, might be comprised of upper level listings, and local directories. the upper level listings contain a compact version of the local directories. Clients desiring to access the information contained in local directories might first access the high-level listings, in order to locate the appropriate local instance. One of the keys for the competent operation of such service is the ability of properly summarizing the information which will be maintained in the upper level directories. We analyze the case of the Lookup Service in the Information Services plane of perfSONAR performance monitoring distributed architecture, which implements IP address summarization in its functions. We propose an empirical method, or heuristic, to perform the summarizations, based on the PATRICIA tree. We further apply the heuristic on a simulated distributed test bed and examine the results.

While social networks provide news from old buddies, you can learn a lot more from people you do not know, but with whom you share many interests. We show in this paper how to build a network of anonymous social acquaintances using a gossip protocol we call Gossple, and how to leverage such a network to enhance navigation within Web 2.0 collaborative applications, a la LastFM and Delicious. Gossple nodes (users) periodically gossip digests of their interest profiles and compute their distances (in terms of interest) with respect to other nodes. this is achieved with little bandwidth and storage, fast convergence, and without revealing which profile is associated with which user. We evaluate Gossple on real traces from various Web 2.0 applications with hundreds of PlanetLab hosts and thousands of simulated nodes. © IFIP international Federation for Information Processing 2010.

Visualization of remote data needs software that is fundamentally designed for distributed processing and high-speed networks. Motivated by and following the requirements of a distributed visualization application, this article describes the design and implementation of a fast and configurable remote data access system called eavivdata. Because wide-area networks may have a high latency, the remote data access system uses an architecture that effectively hides latency. Four remote data access architectures are analyzed and the results show that an architecture that combines bulk and pipeline processing is the best solution for high-throughput remote data access. the resulting system, also supporting high-speed transport protocols and configurable remote operations, is up to 400 times faster than a comparable existing remote data access system.

Reliability is of great practical importance in distributed computing systems (DCSs) due to its immediate impact on system performance, i.e., quality of service. the issue of reliability becomes more crucial particularly for `cost-conscious' DCSs like grids and clouds. Unreliability brings about additional-often excessive-capital and operating costs. Resource failures are considered as the main source of unreliability in this study. In this study, we investigate the reliability of workflow execution in the context of scheduling and its effect on operating costs in DCSs, and present the reliability for profit assurance (RPA) algorithm as a novel workflow scheduling heuristic. the proposed RPA algorithm incorporates a (operating) cost-aware replication scheme to increase reliability. the incorporation of cost awareness greatly contributes to efficient replication decisions in terms of profitability. To the best of our knowledge, the work in this paper is the first attempt to explicitly take into account (monetary) reliability cost in workflow scheduling.

Deploying the sensor nodes at the best locations for random field reconstruction via sensor network is a fundamental task. One-dimensional random field is a stochastic process. In this paper, we first propose an optimal sensor deployment strategy for Wiener process estimation. the optimal locations for the deployed sensors are uniformly distributed in the field. In addition, we propose a suboptimal sensor deployment to estimate the Gaussian random field which is described as an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We show that the suboptimal deployment strategy for Gaussian random field is also uniformly distributed. Several simulations show the performance of our proposed deployment strategies.

Service level agreements are an intrinsic part of service level management frameworks. they are electronic contracts, or part of a contract, and capture quality-of-service guarantees, responsibilities and constraints related to the provision and consumption of services. In the area of distributed systems a handful of service level agreement specifications exist, designed to support the automated management of service-related agreements. Each of these specifications has a different focus and targets a different group of usage scenarios and stakeholders. In this paper, we show, based on the example of the WS-Agreement specification, how to make use of SLA@SOI's service level agreement model SLA* to map between different service level agreement representations and thus be able to integrate a variety of different specifications into one service-oriented infrastructure.

Versatile storage systems aim to maximize storage resource utilization by supporting the ability to `morph' the storage system to best match the application's demands. To this end, versatile storage systems significantly extend the deployment- or run-time configurability of the storage system. this flexibility, however, introduces a new problem: a much larger, and potentially dynamic, configuration space makes manually configuring the storage system an undesirable if not unfeasible task. this paper presents our initial progress towards answering the question: “How can we configure a distributed storage system (i.e., enable/disable its various optimizations and configure their parameters) with minimal human intervention?” We discuss why manually configuring the storage system is undesirable; present the success criteria for an automated configuration solution; propose a generic architecture that supports automated configuration; and, finally, instantiate this architecture into a first prototype, which controls the configuration of similarity detection optimizations in the MosaStore distributed storage system. Our evaluation results demonstrate that the prototype can provide performance close to the optimal configuration at the cost of minimal overhead.

Snapshot isolation (SI) is an important database transactional isolation level adopted by major database management systems (DBMS). Until now, there is no solution for any traditional DBMS to be easily replicated with global SI for distributed transactions in cloud computing environments. HBase is a column-oriented data store for Hadoop that has been proven to scale and perform well on clouds. HBase features random access performance on par with open source DBMS such as MySQL. However, HBase only provides single atomic row writes based on row locks and very limited transactional support. In this paper, we show how multi-row distributed transactions with global SI guarantee can be easily supported by using bare-bones HBase with its default configuration so that the high throughput, scalability, fault tolerance, access transparency and easy deployability properties of HBase can be inherited. through performance studies, we quantify the cost of adopting our technique. the contribution of this paper is that we provide a novel approach to use HBase as a cloud database solution with global SI at low added cost. Our approach can be easily extended to other column-oriented data stores.
