the Web Services Agreement specification defines a normative language to formulate Service Level Agreements and a basic protocol to expose service-level descriptions, validate service-level requests, and come to an agreement. this protocol, often called “take-it-or-leave-it”, allows a service provider and a service consumer to decide whether to accept or reject a service offer. Although this approach is sufficient for a number of use cases, others exist with requirements for multi-step negotiation or the adaptation of an existing agreement. In this paper, we describe the Web Services Agreement Negotiation protocol, a proposal by the Open Grid Forum to extend the existing specification. this proposal is the result of combining various research activities that have been conducted to define protocols for negotiating service levels or to supersede the existing “take-it-or-leave-it” protocol. the main characteristics of this proposal are the multi-round negotiation capability, renegotiation capability, and compliance with the original specification.

the analysis and modeling of the failures bound to occur in today's large-scale production systems is invaluable in providing the understanding needed to make these systems fault-tolerant yet efficient. Many previous studies have modeled failures without taking into account the time-varying behavior of failures, under the assumption that failures are identically, but independently distributed. However, the presence of time correlations between failures (such as peak periods with increased failure rate) refutes this assumption and can have a significant impact on the effectiveness of fault-tolerance mechanisms. For example, the performance of a proactive fault-tolerance mechanism is more effective if the failures are periodic or predictable; similarly, the performance of checkpointing, redundancy, and scheduling solutions depends on the frequency of failures. In this study we analyze and model the time-varying behavior of failures in large-scale distributed systems. Our study is based on nineteen failure traces obtained from (mostly) production large-scale distributed systems, including grids, P2P systems, DNS servers, web servers, and desktop grids. We first investigate the time correlation of failures, and find that many of the studied traces exhibit strong daily patterns and high autocorrelation. then, we derive a model that focuses on the peak failure periods occurring in real large-scale distributed systems. Our model characterizes the duration of peaks, the peak inter-arrival time, the inter-arrival time of failures during the peaks, and the duration of failures during peaks; we determine for each the best-fitting probability distribution from a set of several candidate distributions, and present the parameters of the (best) fit. Last, we validate our model against the nineteen real failure traces, and find that the failures it characterizes are responsible on average for over 50% and up to 95% of the downtime of these systems.

Animals, such as squirrels, cause significant outages in overhead distribution systems. Models that would accurately estimate outages caused by animals would be very useful for utilities for year-end analysis of reliability performance of the distribution system. Large increase in outages caused by animals would require the utility to do further evaluation and take remedial actions. A two-layer Bayesian network model with Month-Type, Level of Fair Weather Days in the week, and Outage Level in the previous week as input and Outage Level in the week is presented in this paper for estimation of weekly animal-related outages. Results of different approaches for classification of inputs and output are presented, which are then compared to select the best classification of input and output variables for the model.

Reliability calculation is the most important concern in designing and planning of distribution systems, which is considered, in terms of the economical concerns, with minimal interruption of customers. Storage devices are usually used for storing the electric energy while the electric price is low, and deliver their reserved energy when it has financial profit. Also, it could be effective for decreasing the average duration and frequency of outages in load points. In this paper, a method for evaluation of average annual energy not supplied (ENS) for a radial distribution system with DG units and storage devices is presented. Besides, the genetic algorithm (GA) is used to find the optimal capacity and the best location for storage device in order to minimize ENS and installation cost simultaneously. the effectiveness of this method is examined on a real distribution network.

We describe a decision-support tool that optimizes the energy services of residential end-users by scheduling the operation of available distributed energy resources. We discuss the application of the tool to a `smart' home case study and the solution to the resulting highly-dimensional scheduling problem. We then use the optimal schedules formulated by the tool to determine the value of the forecasted information used when the schedules are created. this is achieved by computing the additional costs avoided by the end-users due to the accuracy of the forecasts. We also demonstrate how to use the tool to derive robust schedules when the end-users are not certain on the magnitude of solar insolation, magnitude of energy service demands, availability of a plug-in hybrid vehicle as storage, and status of Critical Peak Pricing. the robust schedule is derived by maximizing the expected net benefit when the schedule is applied to all likely scenario outcomes.

Discovering and tracking of spatio-temporal patterns in noisy sequences of events is a difficult task that has become increasingly pertinent due to recent advances in ubiquitous computing, such as community-based social networking applications. the core activities for applications of this class include the sharing and notification of events, and the importance and usefulness of these functionalites increases as event-sharing expands into larger areas of one's life. Ironically, instead of being helpful, an excessive number of event notifications can quickly render the functionality of event-sharing to be obtrusive. Rather, any notification of events that provides redundant information to the application/user can be seen to be an unnecessary distraction. In this paper, we introduce a new scheme for discovering and tracking noisy spatio-temporal event patterns, with the purpose of suppressing reoccurring patterns, while discerning novel events. Our scheme is based on maintaining a collection of hypotheses, each one conjecturing a specific spatio-temporal event pattern. A dedicated Learning Automaton (LA) - the Spatio-Temporal Pattern LA (STPLA) - is associated with each hypothesis. By processing events as they unfold, we attempt to infer the correctness of each hypothesis through a real-time guided random walk. Consequently, the scheme we present is computationally efficient, with a minimal memory footprint. Furthermore, it is ergodic, allowing adaptation. Empirical results involving extensive simulations demonstrate the STPLA's superior convergence and adaptation speed, as well as an ability to operate successfully with noise, including both the erroneous inclusion and omission of events. Additionally, the results included, which involve a so-called "Presence Sharing" application, are both promising and in our opinion, impressive. It is thus our opinion that the proposed STPLA scheme is, in general, ideal for improving the usefulness of event notification and sharing

Researchers in data intensive domains, like the Virtual Physiological Human initiative (VPH-I), are commonly overwhelmed with the vast and increasing amount of data available. Advanced studies in biomedicine and other domains often require a considerable amount of effort to achieve data access to a critical mass of relevant data to analyze the problem at hand. We aim to improve this situation and propose a novel application of Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms for data services. this enables scientists to obtain exactly the data they require, rather than being spoilt for choice which data source might comprise suitable data. the proposed QoS support includes a negotiation model based on service level agreements (SLAs), which in turn comprises data-related service level objectives (SLOs) to express the required guarantees about the quantity or quality of data. Moreover a corresponding QoS management model is presented which resolves the complex process of the SLA generation within data access and data mediation services. the benefits of this approach are materialized in the context of the @neurIST data environment and an initial experimental evaluation demonstrates promising performance improvements in a real world scenario.

Controllable electricity loads and storage devices have the potential to significantly and inexpensively increase the operating reliability of power systems, especially in systems with variable, unpredictable generation from renewable sources. However, in cases where a large number of small devices is used for operating reserves, it may be difficult to estimate the available reserve capacity, especially if one desires to minimally impact the end-use function of the devices. To address this issue, we present a probabilistic modeling framework with the specific goal of developing a model of active storage devices, i.e. devices that can both consume and supply electricity to a power system, and to develop bounds on the probability of a load curtailment event based on limited observable characteristics of the devices. the formal analysis in this paper uses asymptotic probability theory to derive bounds for the probability of load curtailment. We expect that this work will form the basis to developing control laws for active device power management as well as for designing reliability-constrained power systems with large active device populations.

the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments at CERN result in vast amounts of data which are interesting for researchers around the world. For transporting the data to 11 data distribution centers, an optical private network (OPN) has been constructed as the result of a collaboration of several academic networks. the multi-domain nature of this collaboration poses new challenges, in particular to network monitoring. this has been addressed by adopting the multi-domain tool set perfSONAR. In the implemented solution, the network users can access network monitoring information from various measurement points through the LHCOPN Weathermap visualisation tool. this paper details the tool itself and its operation within the LHCOPN using perfSONAR tools. It serves as a blueprint for the support of future data-intensive large-scale projects.

We present a modular evolutionary framework, coined CASE for "complex adaptive system evolver", to automate the modeling and analysis of agent-based simulations (ABSs). the field of agent-based modeling is rapidly growing due to its capabilities to expose the emerging complex phenomena occurring in a wide range of natural and artificial systems such as biological cells, societies, battlefields, stock markets, etc. Nevertheless, studying agent-based simulations is a complicated, interdisciplinary and time-consuming process. Indeed, a large number of simulation parameters has to be considered to identify and fully understand the conditions leading to the emerging phenomena of interest. To tackle this difficulty, the study of ABSs is thus typically conducted in an iterative manner, where each iteration includes the successive and manual modeling of ABSs and analysis of simulation outcomes. To automate this iterative and time-consuming process, we propose CASE, a platform-independent framework capable of evolving ABSs to exhibit the desired emerging behaviors. through this evolutionary approach, the examination, i.e., the modeling, execution and analysis, of ABSs is automated. this process automation significantly facilitates the examination of complex systems using ABSs. In this paper, we present in detail this modular evolutionary framework which is illustrated with an example experiment. In this experiment, CASE is utilized for Automated Red Teaming, a simulation-based vulnerability assessment technique commonly employed by defense analysts. the aim of this paper is to introduce this flexible computational framework which may potentially benefit related fields involving agent-based simulations such as the gaming or financial industries.
