Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology is being recognized as a new approach to decentralized workflow management systems to overcome the limitation of the current centralized Client/Server workflow management systems. However, the lack of supporting adaptability and exception handling at instance level of this approach seems to be responsible for the weakness of the P2P workflow management systems. Dynamic agents can be used within P2P workflow management systems architecture to facilitate adaptability and exception handling. this paper presents a novel dynamic-agent P2P workflow management system which integrates three major technologies: software agents, P2P networking and workflow systems. the adoption of dynamic agents within P2P network can help in overcoming the adaptability problem, reducing the need for human involvement in exception handling and improves the effectiveness of the P2P workflow management system.

Most of the projects which envision knowledge dissemination create and use a unique knowledge base. where all items acquired are organized according to a simple classification. this kind of 'centralized' approach shows some inconsistencies in relation to many of the theories about the creation of knowledge and its dissemination. Due to them, distribution and sociability are essential characteristics for the creation and sharing of knowledge. this incoherence partially explains the reason which leads many users into abandoning this kind of system because they have to adapt themselves to a classification and a rigid structure to represent pieces of knowledge. On the other hand, a lot of tacit knowledge and interaction possibilities are lost in this centralized vision. So, based oil the advantages of a distributed approach for knowledge dissemination and the improvement of interaction, we designed and constructed the Mobile Exchange of Knowledge (MEK). this approach involves, in a mobile way, the exchanging of knowledge among people who share the same interests. Some issues like ad-hoc networks. social networks, location prediction and distributed knowledge management are also related to the MEK concept. However, to verify how effective our idea is, we conducted an experiment in the geographical space of a university in Brazil where we analyzed the movements of Students and also their interest and willingness to share knowledge items. Global warming and climate change trends call for urgent action to manage information and communication technologies in a sustainable manner by minimizing energy consumption and utilizing resources more efficiently. distributedcomputing environments have become the de facto platforms for many applications. these systems bring a range of heterogeneous resources that should be able to function continuously and autonomously. However, distributed systems expend a lot of energy which raises a range of important research issues related to the use and virtualisation of ICT resources in a way offers significant potential to contribute to the goal of what has been described as 'green computing'. this talk will review some of the important questions related to the development of new algorithms and tools for energy-aware resource management allocation for large-scale distributed systems enabling these systems to become environmentally friendly.

A challenge to individuals with cognitive impairments in workplaces is how to remain engaged, recall task routines, and transition autonomously across tasks in a way relying on limited cognitive capacity. A novel task prompting system is presented with an aim to increase workplace and life independence for people with traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, schizophrenia, and Down syndromes. this paper describes an approach to providing distributed cognition support of work engagement for persons with cognitive disabilities. the unique strength of the system is the ability to provide unique-to-the-user prompts that are triggered by context. As this population is very sensitive to issues of abstraction (e.g. icons) and presents the designer withthe need to tailor prompts to a 'universe-of-one' the use of picture or verbal cues specific to each user and context is implemented. the key to the approach is to spread the context awareness across the system, withthe context being flagged by beacon sources and the appropriate response being evoked by displaying the appropriate task prompting cues indexed by the intersection of specific end-user and context ID embedded in the beacons. By separating the context trigger from the pictorial or verbal response, responses can be updated independently of the rest of the installed system, and a single beacon source can trigger multiple responses in the PDA depending on the end-user and their specific tasks. A prototype is built and tested in field experiments involving eight individuals with cognitive impairments. the experimental results show the task load of the human-device interface is low or very low and the capabilities of helping with task engagement are high and reliable.

Digital medical informatics and images are commonly used in hospitals today,. Because of the interrelatedness of the radiology department and other departments, especially the intensive care unit and emergency department, the transmission and sharing of medical images has become a critical issue. Our research group has developed a Java-based distributed medical informatics(DMI) framework to facilitate the rapid development and deployment of medical imaging applications in a distributed environment that can be shared and used by related departments and mobile physicians. Java Based distributed medical informatics is a unique suite of multimedia telemedicine applications developed for the use by medical related organizations. the applications support real-time patients' data, image files, audio and video diagnosis annotation exchanges. the DMI enables joint collaboration between radiologists and physicians while they are at distant geographical locations. the DMI environment consists of heterogeneous, autonomous, and legacy resources. the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), and Java language provide the capability to combine the DMI resources into an integrated, interoperable, and scalable system. the underneath technology, including IDL ORB, Event Service, HOP JDBC/ODBC, legacy system wrapping and Java implementation are explored. this paper explores a distributed collaborative CORBA/JDBC based framework that will enhance medical information management requirements and development. It highlights the capability of DMI both in hardware and software as technologically independent. It encompasses a new paradigm for the delivery of health services that requires process reengineering, cultural changes, as well as organizational changes

Wireless sensor networking is a current topic of research areas and widely used in a variety of applications. the localization of sensor nodes is a fundamental problem in wireless sensor networks. Many localization approaches have been presented and can be implemented using some powerful nodes with GPS devices. In this paper, we introduce a distributed localization scheme, called Rectangle Overlapping Approach (ROA), using a moving beacon with a GPS and a directional antenna. the positions can be computed by simple operations according to the current state of the moving beacon, including the rotation angle and the position. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is very efficient and the node positions can be determined accurately after the beacon operates along straight-line traverse routes.

Although wireless sensor networks (WSN) has been an active field of research for the last many years, service discovery within WSN has not been considered much by the research community. Service discovery in wireless sensor networks particularly in the context of future ubiquitous computing plays an important role and its significance cannot be underestimated. In this paper, we present virtual service overlay architecture for wireless sensor networks. this architecture is based on different service classifications and aims to improve service quality as well as efficient network resource utilization the proposed scheme puts minimal interaction on part of service client and is robust in its implementation. Wireless sensor networks are characterized by their limited battery and computational resources, which needs to be considered in designing an efficient service discovery paradigm for such networks.

Service discovery in wireless sensor networks particularly in the context of future ubiquitous computing plays an important role and its significance cannot be underestimated. In this paper, we present a study of the existing service discovery protocols for wireless sensor networks. Wireless sensor networks are characterized by their limited battery and computational resources, which needs to be considered in designing an efficient service discovery paradigm for such networks. the discussion is followed by some of the open research issues within service discovery for wireless sensor networks with possible solutions to those problems especially in designing a cross layer service discovery mechanism.
