In the last decade, the evolution of distributed computing has shifted from cluster computing to Grid computing. Although bidding provides a useful means of resource allocation for this novel computing paradigm, there exist two challenges to scheduling metatasks in bidding-based Grid systems. (1) the scheduling algorithm has to avert collisions between the jobs of a metatask, as well as prevent contention between the metatasks submitted by different requesters. (2) there is no global information system to facilitate optimum decision-making; hence, requesters are only aware of partial information released by resource providers. To address these challenges, we propose a set of scheduling heuristics to minimize the makespan of each metatask, while simultaneously considering the level of information about competing metatasks revealed by providers. We also present the results of experiments conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed heuristics.

Recently, a significant number of parallel and distributed algorithms have been proposed to mine frequent patterns (FP) from large and/or distributed databases. Among them parallelization of the FP-growth algorithms using the FP-tree has been proved to be highly efficient. However, the FP-tree-based techniques suffer from two major limitations such as multiple database scans requirement (i.e., high I/O cost) and high inter-processor communications cost (during the mining phase). therefore, we propose a novel tree structure, called PP-tree (Parallel Pattern tree) that significantly reduces the I/O cost by capturing the database contents with a single scan and facilitates the efficient FP-growth mining on it with reduced inter-processor communication overhead. Our parallel algorithm works independently at each local site and locally generates global frequent patterns which are merged at the final stage. the experimental results reflect that parallel and distributed FP mining with PP-tree outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms.

We report the current status and future prospects over optical quantum computing, based on reliable, scalable, monolithically integrable planar devices. Every quantum-gate operation can be implemented using only planar 1- qubit rotations and CNOT gates, both in the universal and non-deterministic forms, using either single-photon or coherent-state sources. therefore, any quantum algorithm, such as Quantum Fourier Transform, or Quantum Key Distribution, can be implemented using only planar optical devices.

Resource allocations are performed statically for traditional distributed/parallel applications prior to launching application executions. this limitation could cause long resource waiting time when multiple resources need to be co-allocated. In contrast, the Adaptive distributed/Parallel Applications (ADA), allowing resources to be added and released during executions, can adapt to the dynamic feature of common distributed computing environments (e.g. the Grid). the goal of the work is to create a tool to allow users to easily develop and run ADAs without dealing with the underneath distributed resource environments. We introduce a novel software package, Application Agent (AA), to support the execution of ADAs, including automatic resource allocation, dynamic process deployment, and enabling process wide-area communication. An AA-enabled application can be started on any internet-connected machines and the AA will dynamically configure a virtual machine from the local machine to remote available machines to satisfy the execution. the AA is composed of two parts. the first part is a library of AA interface routines, which contains user-callable functions for developers to integrate their applications with the AA. this second part is the daemons, which dynamically collect computational resources on the Internet to create a wide-area virtual machine to execute an application.

the declining cognitive and motor abilities has become a major problem in the health care of the elderly, often leading to potentially fatal falls. Current rehabilitation strategies to address this issue include routine physiotherapy which is often dull and boring for the patient, leading to poor adherence. In recent years, the use of video games in physical therapy has reportedly had a positive affect on rehabilitation strategies. We propose using a modified version of a music video game, dance dance revolution (DDR), to motivate the elderly and increase adherence to rehabilitation. We also present the design of a mobile monitoring system which allows the health professional to monitor the patient's progress.

Diskless checkpointing is an efficient technique to tolerate a small number of processor failures in large parallel and distributed systems. In literature, a simultaneous failure of no more than N processors is often tolerated by using a one-level Reed-Solomon checkpointing scheme for N simultaneous processor failures, whose overhead often increases quickly as N increases. In this paper, we study an N-level diskless checkpointing scheme to reduce the overhead for tolerating a simultaneous failure of no more than N processors by layering the schemes for a simultaneous failure of i processors, where i = 1, 2, . . . ,N. Simulation results indicate the proposed N-level diskless checkpointing scheme achieves lower fault tolerance overhead than the one-level Reed-Solomon checkpointing scheme for N simultaneous processor failures.

Over the past decade, scheduling in distributed computing system has been an active research. However, it is still difficult to find an optimal scheduling algorithm to achieve load balancing for a specific scientific application which is executed in an unpredictable environment. this is due to the complex nature of the application which changes during runtime and due to the dynamic nature and unpredictability of the computational environment. this paper addresses these issues by presenting a simulated annealing (SA) approach as an optimizer which is an improved version of EG-EDF with tabu search optimizer. Instead of using tabu search, this work used SA to optimize the scheduling algorithm. the scheduling algorithms have been evaluated using three main criteria; number of delayed jobs, makespan time and total tardiness. Our results show the improvements to the main criteria mentioned.

In recent years, many researchers have proposed several algorithms to schedule critical tasks in a homogeneous multiprocessor system for obtaining a shorter scheduling length. However, for heterogeneous computing systems, such methods may lead to lengthen the execution of other non-critical tasks. In this paper, a Non-critical Path Earliest-Finish (NPEF) scheduling algorithm for heterogeneous computing systems has been proposed to eliminate the problem mentioned above. From the experimental results, the proposed method is proven to be an effective scheduling scheme in heterogeneous computing environments.

As the inherent defects of the client-server model, the dependency on the server profoundly confines the system's scalability and seriously clashes the reliability and security of the system. this situation grows into more serious when numerous peers involved in a multiparty IM session. To remedy these deficiencies, this research probes the prospects of using P2P networking paradigm in the multiparty mobile IM systems. In our design, the load on the mobile peers can be greatly reduced with the help of the powerful super peers. Besides, the peers involved in a multiparty session will be adaptively distributed into a few groups. these groups can dynamically grows/shrinks to reduce the message load on the peers and achieve groupware communications in a multiparty session. As will be shown in the simulation results, to effectively support P2P based multiparty mobile instant messaging services, the methods proposed in this paper can remarkably reduce the message load on the peers without obviously increasing the signaling overhead.

Most resource management systems in large distributed environments rely on a centralised controller scheme, known as a meta-scheduler. Such a meta-scheduler is designed to have a complete control of all resources worldwide through a number of local schedulers on each participating site. Faced with a potential large number of sites, the central scheduling point represents a potential bottleneck for requests needing fast response. In this paper, we consider the efficiency of a localised two-tier system: the first tier selects appropriate computing resources from the worldwide pool and creates a virtual cluster. the second tier employs a local scheduler to distribute jobs/tasks from the applications among the resources that make up the cluster. the two-tier approach differentiates the tasks of securing a suitable resource level and managing their use. the aim is to ensure a rapid request response while at the same time optimising the system performance. To this end, we consider a management strategy that incorporates rental policy and scheduling schemes. We propose aggressive and conservative heuristic based policies and evaluate their performance to demonstrate the cost effectiveness of such approaches.
