In this paper we present C2Cfs - a decentralized collective caching architecture for distributed file systems. C2Cfs diverges from the traditional client-server model and advocates decoupling the consistency management role of the central server from the data serving role. Our design enables multiple client-side caches to share data and efficiently propagate updates via direct client-to-client transfers, while maintaining the standard consistency semantics. We present an NFSv4-based implementation of our architecture, which works with unmodified NFS servers and requires no changes to the protocol. Finally, we evaluate the implementation and demonstrate the performance benefits of decentralized data access enabled by our approach.

In this paper we study the performance of a distributed search engine from a data caching point of view. We compare and combine two different approaches to achieve better hit rates: (a) send the queries to the node which currently has the related data in its local memory (cache-aware load balancing), and (b) send the cached contents to the node where a query is being currently processed (cooperative caching). Furthermore, we study the best scheduling points in the query computation in which they can be reassigned to another node, and how this reassignation should be performed. Our analysis is guided by statistical tools on a real question answering system for several query distributions, which are typically found in query logs.

the master/worker API of the ProActive middleware provides with an easy way to use framework for parallelizing embarrassingly parallel applications. However, the traditional master/worker model faces great challenges as the development of the scalability of the distributed computing. A single-layer hierarchical master/worker has been implemented as a solution to the scalability issues of the MW API. In the new framework, the mainmaster only communicates with some submasters, and each submaster manages a set of workers. A ldquobully election algorithmrdquo and an ldquoobject discovery mechanismrdquo are implemented to solve the fault-tolerance problems of the submasters. An automatic load-balancing mechanism is implemented for the hierarchical master/worker to solve divisible tasks. Moreover, an optimization has been done to make the fault-tolerance mechanism more efficient.

Although wireless sensor networks (WSN) have been an active field of research for the last so many years, service discovery within WSN has not been considered much by the research community. Service discovery in wireless sensor networks particularly in the context of future ubiquitous computing plays an important role and its significance cannot be underestimated. In this paper, we present a study of the existing service discovery protocols for wireless sensor networks. Wireless sensor networks are characterized by their limited battery and computational resources, which needs to be considered in designing an efficient service discovery paradigm for such networks. the discussion is followed by some of the open research issues within service discovery for wireless sensor networks with possible solutions to those problems especially in designing a cross layer service discovery mechanism.

the paper discusses an analytical framework to support the analysis of the risk of non-fulfilment of committed obligations in Service Level Agreements (SLA's). On a two-state system, the downtime of a connection on a fixed observation period is modelled for Poissonian arrivals of failures and a few plausible assumptions on repair times. Both cumulative downtime and the number of failure occurrences are modelled.

A key problem in executing performance critical applications on distributed computing environments (e.g. the Grid) is the selection of resources for execution. A lot of research related to "automatic resource selection" has been made to allocate the best-effort resources on behalf of users to optimize the execution performance. However most of current approaches are based on the static principle (i.e. resource selection is performed prior to execution) and need detailed application specific information. In the paper, we introduce a lightweight approach for automatic resource selection/configuration. this approach is based on a simple control theory: the application continuously reports performance values to the middleware Application Agent (AA), which relies on the reported values to decide how to dynamically reconfigure the execution environment during the execution to ensure userspsila performance requirements (e.g. execution deadline, running N iteration per second). We divide the research into two paradigms: neglecting network latency and considering network latency. For the first paradigm, we use a linear prediction with Kalman filter to find the expected RC to satisfy certain performance requirement. For the second, we let AA probe possible RCs and rollback the bad RCs, to look for a local optimized RC that can provide applications highest performance.

Grid computing has emerged as a way to share geographically and organizationally distributed resources that may belong to different institutions or administrative domains. In this context, the scheduling and resource management is usually performed by a grid resource broker. the scheduling task consists of distributing the jobs among the different centers resources and the need to coordinate the grid with the underlying scheduling levels which have already been identified. However, there is still a lack of policies for this approach. In this paper we describe and evaluate our coordinated grid scheduling strategy. We take as a reference the FCFS job scheduling policy and the matchmaking approach for the resource selection. We also present a new job scheduling policy based on backfilling (JR-backfilling) that aims to improve the workloads execution performance, avoiding starvation and the SLOW-coordinated resource selection policy that considers the average bounded slowdown of the resources as the main parameter to perform the resource selection. From our evaluation, based on trace-driven simulations of real grid systems, we state that our proposed coordinated strategy can substantially improve the workloads execution performance as well as the resource utilization.

Fast convergence in IGP is very important for widespread deployment of real time applications. Many efforts, such as fast hello and fast flooding, have been proposed to reduce the convergence time in IGP. However, these solutions need to consume a large amount of CPU and memory resources in routers. Furthermore, they require collaboration of two neighbor routers. In this paper, we analyze the limitations in traditional open shortest path first (OSPF), which causes slow (or not so fast) convergence based on failure data collected in real ISP networks. To address these issues, we propose a distributed OSPF (DOSPF) scheme to schedule routing computation through self-adaptively adjusting SPT waiting time. We analyze the convergence performance with DOSPF with Petri net. We then build a simulation tool to with routing trace in China Education and Research NETwork 2(CERNET2) to evaluate our DOSPF scheme. Our simulations show that DOSPF can effectively improve the IGP convergence performance.

the Grid is an heterogeneous and dynamic environment which enables distributed computation. this makes it a technology prone to failures. Some related work uses replication to overcome failures in a set of independent tasks, and in workflow applications, but they do not consider possible resource limitations when scheduling the replicas. In this paper, we focus on the use of task replication techniques for workflow applications, trying to achieve not only tolerance to the possible failures in an execution, but also to speed up the computation without demanding the user to implement an application-level checkpoint, which may be a difficult task depending on the application. Moreover, we also study what to do when there are not enough resources for replicating all running tasks. We establish different priorities of replication depending on the graph of the workflow application, giving more priority to tasks with a higher output degree. We have implemented our proposed policy in the GRID superscalar system, and we have run the fastDNAml as an experiment to prove our objectives are reached. Finally, we have identified and studied a problem which may arise due to the use of replication in workflow applications: the replication wait time.

Remote health care monitoring is an emerging application that helps to reduce the cost of health care and at the same time improve its quality. However, by its nature, medical sensor data is often unreliable and massive as the data is collected from numerous sensors operating in noisy environments. therefore, ensuring the reliability of the sensor data and the scalability of the health care monitoring services are among major challenge and is a determining factor in the success of the system. In this paper, we propose a robust and flexible preprocessing module as part of an active health care monitoring framework. It is responsible for preparing the sensor data and performing some initial assessment of the data for input to later modules. the proposed preprocessing architecture contains five stages: validation, transformation, cleaning, reduction and cross-verification. the module is evaluated using synthetic blood pressure data.
