Harmony is a network resource brokering system that provides co-allocation of heterogeneous (optical) network resources in multi-domain and multi-technology environments with advance reservation functionalities. this system is one of the outcomes of the Phosphorus EC FP6 research project. the Harmony system architecture has evolved from a first proof-of-concept, centralized network service plane (NSP) to a distributed NSP model; passing through a mid-term, multi-level hierarchical model. this paper addresses key performance and scalability topics of the Harmony system, analyzing its functional architecture under different scenarios, and given different request distribution patterns. the study analyzes and evaluates whether the system can scale to scenarios that accept more requests per second or control more administrative domains. thus, analysis results are discussed in order to determine why the distributed architecture with flexible, in time and bandwidth, advance reservation functionalities has better performance, scalability and convergence when increasing the service plane entities and their relationships.

With the rapid development of P2P, there are some new applications such as P2PSIP and intercommunication of heterogeneous DHTs (distributed Hash Table). In those scenarios, there need some nodes acting as proxies and gateways. Such nodes as proxies or gateways in P2P overlays were called Supernodes. the problem of which nodes would be the supernode s was answered by SN election. To choose an eligible supernode in P2P overlay is time-consumed and it's a NP-hard problem. To decrease the message complexity and to accelerate the election speed, the district or area partitioning model was brought forth. In this paper, the authors mainly analyzed four kinds of district partitioning models, they were models based upon geographical information, IP structure, DHT characteristics and pre-placed supernode.

For supporting peer to peer (P2P) based live media streaming, a P2P overlay network should be able to accommodate robustness, peer heterogeneity, and scalability. In this paper, we have proposed a Hybrid P2P Overlay (HyPO) approach for live media streaming. In the proposed scheme, the overlay network consists of mesh and tree overlay. the mesh overlay is organized by peers that have the similar bandwidth ranges in geographical place. the tree overlay is formed by stable peers, and is constructed over the mesh overlay. We have pursued the robustness of transmission structure by promoting peers that are considered stable in the mesh overlay as members of tree overlay. Depending on the tree optimization mechanism, the peers which have a large bandwidth will be near to the media source node in the tree overlay, and evenly distributed in the tree with branches of a similar depth. As a result, the tree optimization reduces the average depth of the tree, which enhances the scalability. We evaluate HyPO through simulation. the results demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our HyPO.

With the development of computer techniques, 3D model has been used more and more widely and content-based 3D model retrieval has been a hotspot in the area of multimedia information retrieval. How to extract 3D models' feature effectively is still a difficulty. Projection based 3D model feature extraction is an important kind in feature extraction, because of its robustness against noise, simplification and its simplicity of feature extraction. Based on the theory of principle plane, a feature extraction method based on the projection of principle plane is proposed and applied to 3D model retrieval. the experiments show that the method performs well.

We present a leaky thulium-doped photonic crystal fibre (PCF) design to down shift the thulium emission in the 1.7 - 1.8 mum band. the microstructured cladding structure manages confinement loss to counteract the thulium emission cross section. thus, the fibre is considered as a distributed low pass filter along the fibre length. Computations on confinement loss show differential loss two orders of magnitude between 1.7 mum and 1.9 mum. We report on the fabrication and the linear characterization of the modelled fibre. A down shift around 1.75 mum of thulium fibre emission is experimentally demonstrated in single pass configuration.

the design of both active and passive micro/nano-sphere systems is performed by optimizing their sizes, spatial distribution and the other physical and geometrical parameters. In particular, rare earth doped spherical particles are designed in order to obtain distributed and highly efficient light sources for active sensors. the lasing characteristics of active silica glass microsphere are numerically simulated in the third band of optical fibre communication by means of a home made computer code. Finally, passive and active spherical nanoparticles, covered by a thin metallic shell, surrounded by different dielectric materials and arranged in different lattices are optimized for sensing applications.

Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (PON) systems, such as GPON (standardized in ITU-T Rec. G.984 series) and 1G-EPON (IEEE 802.3ah, now part of IEEE 802.3-2008) have been standardized and are now being mass-deployed in various markets around the world. With the continuous increase in bandwidth demand generated by consumer and business applications, the need for a new, higher capacity access architecture is more than obvious. therefore, one of the principal requirements for next-generation PON (ngPON) is to provide a substantial increase of the bandwidth available to end-subscribers, when compared with GPON and 1G-EPON. Additionally, considering the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) investment made for deploying gigabit-capable PON systems, ngPON must be able to protect the investment of the legacy networks by ensuring a subscriber seamless migration from GPON/1G-EPON to ngPON. ngPON systems are currently under standardization in two Standard Development Organizations (SDOs), i.e. 10G-EPON in IEEE, as part of P802.3av, and NG-PON in FSAN/ITU-T. the IEEE P802.3av standard focuses only on extensions to the existing 1G-EPON specifications in order to support 10 Gbit/s operation, including symmetric and asymmetric data-rates. On the other hand, NG-PON recommendations cover the complete system, starting from Physical Medium Dependent (PMD), followed by framing and medium access, and ending with security and service provisioning mechanisms. NG-PON systems are divided into two major groups, i.e. NG-PON1 and NG-PON2, based on their characteristics of co-existence with legacy GPON systems. Other SDOs focus on operational, architectural, and management aspects of the existing and future PON systems, e.g. BroadBand Forum (BBF, former DSL Forum).

A new method based on the well-studied boundary element method (BEM) is introduced to calculate ultra-high quality factors (Q) of whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) by studying the Poyting vector. In traditional numerical method, Q can be obtained through the formula Q = -Re(k)/2Im(k) by solving the wavenumber (k) of resonances, such that the precision of Q is determined by the wavenumber k. On the other hand, the precision of the numerical simulations is limited by the computation ability of computer, and the reported simulations of high Q modes are about 10 5 -10 6 based on the popular PC. In this paper, since the field distribution of WGMs has much higher precision compared to the wavenumber k, we can alternatively evaluate the Q by solving the energy in microcavity and the energy through radiation lost (Poyting vector), in the other words, Q = 2pi*(stored energy) / (energy lost per cycle). As a result, the new method has a very high calculation accuracy, which exceeds the limitation in Q calculation of traditional methods. As an example, with this method, a circular microcavity, which has strict analytical solution for WGMs, is investigated. We demonstrate that the present method can evaluate Q factor up to 10 10 , while a little computation resource is required.
