distributed Virtual Environments (DVEs) are geographically distributedcomputing systems which allow multiple users to interact simultaneously in computer-generated, shared virtual environments. DVEs are widely applied in many fields, such as online role playing games, synthesis military simulations, virtual cities, and virtual shopping malls. To support large-scale DVEs with high fidelity and satisfied interactive performance among various distributed clients, massive computing resources, storage resources, and highly efficient distributed server architectures are needed. In this paper, the key techniques of the system design and implementation for large scale distributed Virtual Environment on the Grid (DVE-G) are discussed and a hierarchical architecture of DVE-G is proposed. Some aspects of DVE-G, such as resource management, massive data management, scene synchronization, and fault-tolerance are also discussed. A work-in-progress DVE-G prototype (e.g., the Virtual Hangzhou Dianzi University tourism system) is provided as a testbed L scenario and the present evaluation results show that the architecture of DVE-G is feasible and scales well.

Intracranial stents are medical devices that are becoming increasingly popular in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. A methodology that predicts the released stent configuration prior to intervention has the potential to support the physician in the selection of the optimal approach for a specific patient. this paper proposes a fast virtual stenting technique based on constrained simplex deformable models that is able to virtually release stents in arbitrarily shaped vessel and aneurysm models. the technique effectively embeds the geometrical properties of the stent (cell design, strut size and shape and angles between struts) and achieves favorable execution times of the order of one minute.

Rule-based systems are rapidly becoming an important component of 'mainstream' computing technologies, for example in business process modelling, the semantic web, sensor networks etc. However, while rules provide a flexible way of implementing such systems, the resulting system behaviour and the resources required to realise it can be difficult to predict. In this paper we consider the verification of system behaviour and resource requirements for distributed rule-based systems. More specifically, we consider distributed problem-solving in systems of communicating rule-based systems, and ask how much time (measured as the number of rule firings) and message exchanges does it take the system to find a solution. We show how standard model-checking technology can be used to verify resource requirements for such systems, and present preliminary results which highlight complex tradeoffs between time and communication bounds.

there exists large-scale numerical computation in electromagnetic field which will turn to parallel computation in practical engineering application. Non-overlapping domain decomposition method (DDM) which is suitable of parallel computation was illustrated first in this paper. the formation of element stiffness matrix and the solution of the system of linear equations of finite element method (FEM) are all parallelized based on the non-overlapping DDM. So, it improves the parallel degree further than the traditional solution which only parallelizes the system of linear equations. For more accurately computingthe potential distribution and the electric field intensity an the surface of hardware, the 3D FEM model of 500kV high voltage transmission line was built and decomposed into 2-6 sub-domains for parallel computation on cluster of 6 workstations. the speedups reveal that parallel computation is superior of improving computational efficiency. the results can be used as the basis to optimize the rings' location and reduce the electric field intensity of the insulators string high voltage end.

this paper describes ongoing work for implementing a distributed multi-robot system for measuring various physical properties of the environment in a coordinated manner. Modeling spatial distributions of physical quantities such as temperature, illumination, humidity, gas concentrations, or magnetic flux provides an opportunity to observe how these distributions change in time, how to utilise the information captured by the distributions, and to determine how to adjust the distributions by modifying the environment. the information provided by the models could be useful in numerous applications such as in dynamic optimisation of the heating system of a building for saving energy, in monitoring the air quality in various parts of hospitals and in monitoring the water quality of lakes and rivers (e.g. pH and oxygen levels). Some of the modeled distributions or maps may also carry information which can be used in mobile computing. this article describes the physical robots, which act as mobile measurement instruments in addition to approaches used to model spatial distributions by utilising Gaussian processes, and to coordinate the multi-robot system during the modeling. Preliminary experiments are also presented demonstrating optimal spatial sampling, optimization of measurement paths of multiple robots, mobile robot self-localisation based on the ambient magnetic field of the environment and multi-robot coordination.

Large distributed Real Time systems are time consuming to develop. they frequently overrun cost and time schedules. It has been claimed that Model Driven Architecture is able to address some of the issues that cause these problems. A high level of abstraction and automatic translation between models may help. Platform Independent models for the individual components of the system mixed with scheduling information may enable functional changes and real performance to be assessed early in the development. Establishing different views from the requirements repository may better fit the development engineers skill and reduce errors. this is a position paper that discusses current challenges for the model-based development of distributed real time systems and how they might be overcome. 1.

Grid computing provides the infrastructure needed to access and benefit from distributed resources through Virtual Organizations. Grids will be a vital part in the execution of applications, such as complex simulations. they will also carry applications that need large computational power. Such Grids are called computational Grids. Some applications on the Grid will expect benefit from services that might be time or content specific and will therefore need to adhere to a strict set of guidelines for their operation. these guidelines are referred to as Qualities of Services (QoS). Even though they were extensively researched for Web Services, there is still much work to be done to implement QoS on Grid Services. the aim of this paper is to explain what QoS are vital for a Grid Service, how they would enhance its operation and how they are to be delivered and guaranteed. this is achieved through the exploration of a case study in which QoS requirements are analysed. A framework is then presented which supports delivery of Grid QoS.
