As enterprise computing transforms to accommodate network centric (net-centric) systems and services, comprehensive monitoring capabilities for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based applications are critical in order to unite business requirements with emerging technologies. these capabilities enable network operators and service providers to observe and proactively respond to events that occur during deployment and operation of enterprise computing systems. this paper presents a novel approach for SOA monitoring applied to these systems. Metrics for SOA monitoring are presented along with an SOA monitoring framework and reference monitoring architecture. Examples are provided to demonstrate the usefulness of this architecture for enterprise computing systems.

Software realization of distributedcomputing systems is typically achieved through the component-based software development approach. thus, software executing on such distributed systems consists of many autonomous components which interact with each other to coordinate their activities. the need for such coordination along with requirements such as heterogeneity, scalability, security, and availability, considerably;increases the complexity of code in distributed systems. Simplifying distributed component-based software development requires abstractions at various levels that enable separate design and specification of component interactions and the components themselves. this paper depicts a method to specify component interactions involving temporal invocation constraints. Based on the knowledge of component interactions, two types of replaceability criteria are defined and empirically evaluated.

We present in this paper an overview of current problems withthe Internet from the architectural view point, and we identify and forecast trends for future developments. Our study includes perspectives from different stakeholders of the Internet as well as from the technological development point of view. We conclude that current and future requirements vary greatly between, and even within, different stakeholders, which implies that a successful future network architecture mustprovide maximum flexibility with a minimal set of "hard-wired" properties. In specific, a revised version of the TCP/IP layered architecture would only suffice to address some of the current issues, but would not provide a long term solution. We then show that an autonomic network- architecture with afew simple architectural building blocks is enough to address a great deal of the requirements today and in thefuture.

this paper describes a biologically-inspired architecture, called SymbioticSphere, which allows large-scale data centers to autonomously adapt to dynamic environmental changes. SymbioticSphere follows biological principles such as decentralization, natural selection and symbiosis to design data centers (application services and middleware plotforms). Each application service and middleware platform is designed as a biological entity and implements biological behaviors such as migration, replication death and energy exchange. Services andplatforms cooperatively invoke their behaviors to improve their adaptability. this paper presents a set of behaviors for services and platforms, and describes how services and platforms act and interact with each other. Simulation results show that services and platforms autonomously adapt to dynamic network conditions (e.g., user location, network traffic, and resource availability) by invoking their behaviors suitable for the conditions.

Measuring environmental data in city areas has become an important issue for municipalities due to several climate directives. As fixed measuring stations are inflexible, cost-intensive, and limited to monitoring a specific spot, we developed a distributed environmental monitoring network called Environmental Monitoring in Metropolitan Areas (EMMA). this architecture is based on the delay tolerant networking approach and can be integrated into existing Public Transportation Networks (PTNs). Buses or other vehicles can be equipped with sensor nodes that gather data and forward messages. In order to evaluate the basic ideas of this project we performed a series of real-world experiments. Besides analyzing the behavior of 802.11-based Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) between moving vehicles in a controlled environment, we also evaluated the communication performance in urban environments. Moreover, we examined the qualification of a Disruption Tolerant networking (DTN) implementation for spreading measurement results throughout the network. the suitability of EMMA's architecture has been successfully demonstrated by these experiments.
