In this paper we introduce an analysis framework for mobile workforce automation. the framework is based on the findings from earlier research as well as on an analysis of 27 recent case studies conducted within the field of mobile workforce automation. It consists of a general reference process for mobile work and of a model explaining influencing factors (worker, task, coordination system, information system), optimization goals and their relationships in mobile business processes. the framework can be applied to process modeling, simulation, and optimization as well as to requirements analysis and return on investment calculations. Based on the results of case study evaluation, it is furthermore shown, that recent mobile IT solutions are mainly built for relatively simple processes and cooperation models. Mobilizing more complex processes still seems to be a challenge.

Transparent optical networks need novel connection management approaches to take into account the presence of physical impairments in lightpath provisioning. Two main schemes are emerging from literature when considering how to introduce impairment-aware mechanisms in a distributed optical control plane like GMPLS. A well-known approach is based on extending the routing protocol to compute an optically-feasible light-path. Lately, a new approach is emerging which keeps the routing protocol unmodified while leveraging on signaling protocol extensions to find the proper lightpath for the incoming connection request. the aim of this paper is to prove that the signaling-based approach has several advantages compared to the routing-based one, in term of scalability and robustness especially when link information changes are frequent in the network. Simulation results show that a signaling-based approach is much more robust to inaccurate information about network status, therefore it is a suitable approach for considering physical impairments in dynamic optical networks.

We present in this paper an overview of current problems with the Internet from the architectural view point, and we identify and forecast trends for future developments. Our study includes perspectives from different stakeholders of the Internet as well as from the technological development point of view. We conclude that current and future requirements vary greatly between, and even within, different stakeholders, which implies that a successful future network architecture must provide maximum flexibility with a minimal set of "hard-wired" properties. In specific, a revised version of the TCP/IP layered architecture would only suffice to address some of the current issues, but would not provide a long term solution. We then show that an autonomic network architecture with a few simple architectural building blocks is enough to address a great deal of the requirements today and in the future

the art of ERP implementation stands in matching ERP features with the requirements of an organisation so as to define how to adapt the system and/or the organisation to reach a synergic functioning. A number of approaches have been developed in practice and elaborated in research to solve the issues posed by this matching activity, for example to solve the conceptual mismatch issue or to systematise similarity analysis between different kinds of models such as business process models and system functionality models. One aspect is not often considered in these approaches: it is the opportunity to reuse experience from one ERP implementation project to another. this paper presents a reuse-based requirements elicitation method for ERP integration. the method was developed in an action research approach in a project held in a charity association that wanted to integrate Microsoft's Dynamics NAV.

Traditional workflow management systems (WFMSs) are not flexible enough to support loosely-structured processes. Furthermore, flexibility in contemporary WFMSs usually comes at a certain cost, such as lack of support for users, lack of methods for model analysis, lack of methods for analysis of past executions, etc. DECLARE is a proto-type of a WFMS that uses a constraint-based process modeling language for the development of declarative models describing loosely-structured processes. In this paper we show how DECLARE can support loosely-structured processes without sacrificing important WFMSs features like user support, model verification, analysis of past executions, changing models at run-time, etc.

the paper considers distributed applications where interactions between constituent services take place via messages in an asynchronous environment with unpredictable communication and processing delays; further, interacting parties are not required to be online at the same time. Message-oriented middleware (MoM) is commonly used for connecting such loosely coupled distributed applications. Despite loose coupling, many service interactions have temporal and message validation constraints. A failure to deliver a valid message within its time constraint could cause mutually conflicting views of an interaction (one party regarding it as timely whilst the other party regarding it as untimely) leading to application level inconsistencies. In a loosely coupled system, such inconsistencies could remain undetected for a long time, requiring costly application level recovery procedures. this paper describes how synchronisation support providing multilateral consistency guarantees can be provided using the underlying MoM to prevent inconsistencies from reaching application level.

the increasing complexity of modern Information Services (IS) makes necessary to carry on review activities. For many companies, these reviews take place within the framework of the Enterprise Architecture, which aims at sharing components among applications within the IS. these reviews can for instance help the architects in detecting alignment problems between an analysis model and a design model constrained by the enterprise data model. We propose an automatic approach, relying on Model Driven Engineering (MDE), to measure such an alignment. We propose a set of measures which are formally defined using a classical axiomatization approach. We describe how these measures can be implemented with MDE techniques. We finally illustrate their use for the France-Telecom IS of telecom services.

Middleware supporting the development of distributed systems has been produced since the beginnings of the Internet. With the emergence of mobile computing new requirements for this kind of middleware arise since the scenario for mobile computing is very different from the desktop computing one. Nowadays, because increasing ubiquitous computing, new scenarios in which desktop computing application should communicate with mobile application are becoming more and more frequent. In this paper we present a platform which apart of being lightweight and easy to use has also the advantage that it enables the communication of software objects between the most used two platforms for mobile devices: JME using the Java language and .Net using C#.

the decentralized process of configuring enterprise applications is complex and error-prone, involving multiple participants/roles and numerous configuration changes across multiple files, application server settings, and database decisions. this paper describes an approach to automated enterprise application configuration that uses a feature model, executes a series of probes to verify configuration properties, formalizes feature selection as a constraint satisfaction problem, and applies constraint logic programming techniques to derive a correct application configuration. To validate the approach, we developed a configuration engine, called Fresh, for enterprise Java applications and conducted experiments to measure how effectively Fresh can configure the canonical Java Pet Store application. Our results show that Fresh reduces the number of lines of hand written XML code by up to 92% and the total number of configuration steps by up to 72%.

this paper presents a requirements analysis and a solution approach to representing collaborative business processes conforming to the Wf-XML/ASAP standard proposal in a UDDI registry. Wf-XML/ASAP is introduced as a coordination protocol for business collaborations focusing on loosely coupled subprocesses which involve executable and human activities. the UDDI standard as part of the web services protocol stack is designed to hold service relevant information from overall business entities down to technical fingerprints of mostly simple web services. We present a solution approach that allows to use UDDI for registering and discovering services using Wf-XML/ASAP interfaces. We conclude that while such a representation is possible, some of UDDI's structures and relationships need to be extended in order to get an appropriate service registry for interoperable services collaborative infrastructures.
