this paper proposes a multi-agent system to manage the distributed collaborative design environment. the JADE-based autonomous workflow management system (JAWMS) uses a workflow enactment mechanism and an agent integration mechanism. the workflow enactment mechanism is the system kernel and follows the specifications of the workflow reference model. the system kernel supports five agents to manage the workflow and the integration mechanism supports an agent to interact with other platforms and to coordinate and monitor the workflow. JAWMS facilitates integrated circuit design and team interaction in a collaborative but distributed product development environment.

Web services use an interoperable and loosely coupled data exchange architecture. Web services processing can cause significant runtime overhead, especially when the number of fine-grained transactions becomes large. Although some best-practice guidelines recommend coarse-grained messages to improve the performance of web services, coarse-grained services may interfere with the componentization of the services. Service granularity should be designed for reusability and modularity. In this paper, we propose a SOAP message bundling framework. this framework enables bundling multiple messages into one message. With this framework, application developers do not have to consider the service granularity. Instead, the framework bundles some fine-grained messages into a single coarse-grained message. To support this framework, we provide for service providers (1) a WSDL conversion tool and (2) a skeleton wrapper generator. these tools let service providers receive bundled messages without modifying existing service implementations. We also provide (3) a stub wrapper generator that allows service requesters to use bundled services easily. the existing message exchanges are not influenced by this framework. We evaluated the performance gain in experiments using the Google SOAP API. the results showed that our approach improves the performance of web services.

the development of complex product is essentially concerned with multidisciplinary knowledge and requires computer supported cooperation among the designers. A multidisciplinary collaborative modeling and simulation (M&S) technology is an effective approach for the design and development of the complex product. the challenge now faced is how to apply the multidisciplinary M&S in the systematic level of complex product development. the key issue is how to integrate the heterogeneous, autonomous software tools in a distributed environment. In this paper, we propose a high level architecture (HLA) and web services based framework for multidisciplinary collaborative design in a distributed environment. the process of multidisciplinary collaborative design project is principally analyzed. A modeling and simulation platform with the focus of multidisciplinary collaborative design is present. Besides its key technologies of HLA and web services based integration are studied. the interoperability issue to this research is also discussed.

Considering an asynchronous system made up of n processes and where up to t of them can crash, finding the weakest assumptions that such a system has to satisfy for a common leader to be eventually elected is one of the holy grail quests of fault-tolerant asynchronous computing. this paper is a step in such a quest. It has two main contributions. First, it proposes an asynchronous system model, in which an eventual leader can be elected, that is weaker and more general than previous models. this model is captured by the notion of intermittent rotating t-star. An x-star is a set of x + 1 processes: a process p (the center of the star) plus a set of x processes (the points of the star). Intuitively, assuming logical times rn (round numbers), the intermittent rotating t-star assumption means that there are a process p, a subset of the round numbers rn, and associated sets Q(rn) such that each set {p} UQ(rn) is a t-star centered at p, and each process of Q(rn) receives from p a message tagged rn in a timely manner or among the first (n - t) messages tagged rn it ever receives. the star is called t-rotating because the set Q(rn) is allowed to change with rn. It is called intermittent because the star can disappear during finite periods. this assumption, not only combines, but generalizes several synchrony and time-free assumptions that have been previously proposed to elect an eventual leader (e.g., eventual t-source, eventual t-moving source, message pattern assumption). Each of these assumptions appears as a particular case of the intermittent rotating t-star assumption. the second contribution of the paper is an algorithm that eventually elects a common leader in any system that satisfies the intermittent rotating t-star assumption. that algorithm enjoys, among others, two noteworthy properties. It may be very difficult to design in advance a global system model which accomplishes all organizational unit idiosyncrasies in complex organizations dispersed across large geographical regions. In this work, we propose the use of our Coppeer framework for agent based peer-to-peer application development to implement an environment in which distributed systems can be collaboratively and incrementally built. the key points of the approach are the use of semi-structured documents as data model, the partitioning of system code in several loosely coupled agents and the use of ontologies to conciliate differences in organizational unit vocabularies.

Business applications are more and more often developed on the basis of Web services. the aim is to provide platform independence and loose coupling between business applications to facilitate distributed and grid computing scenarios. However, most efforts to deploy and publish Web services are manual. Manual discovery, invocation and composition of Web services in a distributed computing environment significantly hamper the automatic process of enterprise application integration. Semantic enhancements in Web services aim at making the process of Web services discovery, invocation and composition dynamic by exposing the machine understandable description of Web service capabilities and Web service requests. In this paper we compare recent dynamic Web service composition approaches. We highlight some dynamic composition issues and compare existing approaches with respect to these issues. Based on these findings we present a new and generic semantic Web services integration and composition lifecycle to facilitate the semantic based integration and composition of grid services. the proposed semantic Web services integration and composition life cycle explains the necessary integration phases beginning with the modeling and developing of processes as Web service composition and ending with their execution. With this lifecycle, integration hurdles among different service composition approaches will be diminished.

A problem of today's standard business process (BP) automation systems is that they are too rigid to cope with changing business demands, especially for long running BPs. A solution to overcome this problem is to combine BPs with business rules (BR). State of the art BP automation systems are based on Web service (WS) technology and use WS composition languages, for example BPEL, for abstract and executable BPs. On the other hand, most of today's implementations use BRs mostly to make calculations and to adapt simple decisions to business users without full integration into a BP automation system. We will show that BP execution and BR functionality can be integrated properly in a standard service oriented architecture. this finding will be applied in a new approach of configuring BPs through using BRs. the assumption is that if one considers BRs already while modeling a BP, more advanced BP aspects like decisions, data constraints and control flow can be made agile and adaptive during run-time. We present multiple solutions demonstrating how BRs can be used to obtain different aspects ofBP agility. Described as BP Modeling Patterns, our solutions give insight on how agile BPs can be implemented with current BP automation technology. We implemented them using IBM WebSphere integration developer and IBM WebSphere process server.

Communication delay and globally task arrangement should be well considered during distributed software design. though the software design is a kind of creative work and there are reworks almost all the cases, as a result, the duration and even the task sequence is undetermined. Micro-estimation on demand, which we proposed in the former paper, refines the estimation of effort and duration for the tasks in the next short period. this paper is intended to present our solution to reschedule the design tasks among distributed software design teams, which includes multiple component status transition graph (MCSTG), micro-estimation and PERT technique. the schedule risk in such environment will be analyzed and the solution will focus on how to improve the time-to-market. With the solution presented, the designers may fasten their collaboration in global software design.

Benchmarking is the process of comparing one's own performance to the statistics of a group of competitors, named peer group. It is a common and important process in the business world for many important business metrics, called key performance indicators (KPI). Privacy is of the utmost importance, since these KPIs allow the inference of sensitive information. therefore several secure multiparty computation (SMC) protocols for securely and privately computing statistics of KPIs have recently been developed. these protocols are the basic building block for a privacy-preserving benchmarking system, but in order to complete an enterprise system that offers a benchmarking service to its customers more problems need to be solved. this paper addresses two remaining problems: peer group formation and protocol orchestration. We first analyze how peer group participation impacts privacy and vice-versa. Given current network performance limitations we conclude that in order for KPIs to remain private one subscriber can participate in at most one peer group. Peer group formation is the process of forming sensible peer groups out of the set of subscribers. A sensible peer group is one that is useful for benchmarking, i.e. a group of similar companies, under the constraint that one subscriber can participate in at most one peer group. We characterize subscribers by a set of discrete criteria and therefore view the automatic peer group formation as a data clustering problem. A data clustering algorithm customized for automatic peer group formation is required to build clusters whose size does not fall below a minimum threshold. We present a high-performance modification of k-means clustering that takes the minimum cluster size as an additional parameter which might be of independent interest. In a simulation we evaluate its practical applicability to automatic peer group formation. Our final approach is the first automatic peer group formation algorithm for an enterprise benchmar

We designed and implemented MSFSS, a scalable and flexible distributed file system for storage and retrieval of mass small files. MSFSS is a platform built upon the existing commodity file systems. It automatically stores files onto the best-fit commodity file systems according their access patterns. To avoid central bottleneck, it optimizes metadata size, separates metadata operations from file data transfer, and implements batch metadata operations. the system provides data migration, hot file caching, and replication, which are essential for large scale, reliable storage systems. It has successfully been deployed as storage system for our Web application which has about 50 TB of small files. Experimental results show that MSFSS provides high scalability and throughput in file operation services.
