the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the National Taiwan University has identied the area of content science for media-rich life, broadly construed, as one of core areas for the college's future directions. One major aspect of this project is to develop the enabling technology for reconfigurable platforms for multimedia applications. Specifically, the goal is to develop reconfigurable platforms of system-on-a-chip (SoC) components for the applications to support the needs of multi-modal multimedia contents and to provide rapid system prototyping. the faculties in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science have formed a multi-discipline team to develop such technology. Our team includes seven faculties and more than thirty students from the college. this short report describes the reconfigurable platform for content science research activities currently underway by our team. Our current activities include to develop the technology to analyze the critical path for avoiding hardware contention, to minimize the use of logic components, to design the multimedia IPs, to optimally route the bus and place the logic units, to design energy efficient cache, to evaluate the performance and power consumption, to design the algorithm for temporal floor-planning/placement. © 2005 IEEE.

Sensor networks are increasingly being used for applications which require fast processing of data, such as multimedia processing. distributed computing can be used on a sensor network to reduce the completion time of a task and distribute the energy consumption equitably across all sensors. the distribution of task modules to sensors should consider not only the time and energy savings, but must also improve reliability of the entire task execution. We formulate the above as an optimization problem, and use the A* algorithm with improvements to determine an optimal static allocation of modules among a set of sensors. We also suggest a faster but suboptimal algorithm, called the greedy A* algorithm. Both algorithms have been simulated, and the results have been compared in terms of energy savings, decrease in completion time of the task, and the deviation of the sub-optimal solution from the optimal one. the sub-optimal solution required 8-35% less computation, at the cost of 2.5-15% deviation from the optimal solution in terms of average energy spent per sensor node. Both the A* and greedy A* algorithms have been shown to distribute energy consumption more uniformly across sensors than centralized execution. the greedy A* algorithm is found to be scalable, as the number of evaluations in determining the allocation increases linearly with the number of sensors. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

As computer and computational scientists have to manage access to increasingly complex computing and data resources, this becomes a time consuming task. this is especially true for Computational Grids, which can involve the integration of resources distributed across multiple administrative domains. Deciding which systems to use, where the data resides for a particular application domain, how to migrate the data to the point of computation (or vice versa), and data rates required to maintain a particular application "behaviour" become significant. To support these, it is important to develop brokering approaches based on intelligent techniques - to support service discovery, manage performance based on data from monitoring tools, and support data selection. Although the use of broker-based techniques can be found in literature today - very few of these fully utilise the potential of an agent-based system. Intelligent agents provide a useful means to achieve the objectives outlined above. An important and emerging area within Grid computing is the role of service ontologies - especially domain specific ontologies, which may be used to capture particular application needs. Using these, scientists may be able to share and disseminate their data and software more effectively. this has been recognised as being important by both the computer and computational science community - and current efforts towards establishing "Semantic Grids" is a useful first step in this direction. the role of agent standards and how they can be integrated with Grid computing is explored. Specialist activities that can be undertaken by agent-based computing are outlined, along with example implementation of such systems. Research challenges that still need to be addressed are highlighted, along with possible benefits that overcoming such challenges will bring. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

the behaviour of parallel and distributed programs can be modeled as the occurrence of events and their interrelationship. Event data collected according to the event model is stored within a partial-order data structure, where it can be reasoned about, enabling debugging, program steering, and autonomic feedback control of the application. Reasoning over event data, a critical requirement for autonomie computing, is typically in the form of predicate detection, a search mechanism able to detect and locate arbitrary predicates within the event data. To enable hierarchical predicate detection, compound events are formed by computing the convex closure of the matching primitive events. In particular, the Xie and Taylor convex-closure algorithm forms the basis for such an approach to predicate detection. Unfortunately, their algorithm can be quite slow, especially for hierarchical compound events. In this paper, we study the cause of the problems in the Xie and Taylor algorithm. We then develop an efficient extension to their algorithm, based on a simple caching scheme. We prove our algorithm correct. We also provide experimental results that demonstrate that our approach reduces the execution time of the Xie and Taylor algorithm by up to 98 percent. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Ubiquitous access of the resource is the greatest challenge in the world of distributed mobile computing. this paper discusses the framework of agent based middleware to provide efficient, flexible and scalable system support for configuration and communication in heterogeneous wireless networks. the proposed middleware satisfies the requirement of ubiquitous access of the resource in multilayer modular manner by hiding the platform heterogeneity.

Scientists are increasingly using large distributed systems built from commodity off-the-shelf components to perform scientific computation. Grid computing has expanded the scale of such systems by spanning them across organizations. While such systems are cost-effective, the usage of large number of commodity components causes high fault and failure rates. Some of these faults result in silent data corruption leaving users with possibly incorrect results. In this work, we analyzed the faults and failures that occurred in Condor pools at UW-Madison having a few thousand CPUs and in two large distributed applications: US-CMS and BMRB BLAST, each of which used hundreds of thousands of CPU hours. We propose 'silent-fail-stutter' fault-model to correctly model the silent failures and detail how to handle them. Based on the model, we have designed mechanisms that automatically detect and handle silent failures and ensure that users get correct results. Our mechanisms perform automated fault location and can transparently adapt applications to avoid faulty machines. We also designed a data provenance mechanism that tracks the origin of the results, enabling scientists to selectively purge results from faulty components.

In the ubicomp/percomp era, more ubiquitous computation/information/service would be the main driving force, and the corresponding essential element would be the various smart/intelligent ubiquitous things or u-things with attached/embedded/blended computers. Based on the soon available ubiquitous networking infrastructures and services, such ordinary u-things surrounding us are capable of computing, communicating, connecting or being connected, and behaving smartly with some intelligence. Our world would evolve towards a smart world mainly characterized by ubiquitous intelligence and filled with these smart u-things falling into three categories; smart object, smart space and smart system. the next research phase to emerge, we believe, is to coordinate these diverse smart objects and integrate these isolated smart spaces together into a higher level of spaces known as smart hyperspace or hyper-environments, and eventually create the smart world. In this paper, we discuss the potential trends and related challenges from smart things, smart spaces to smart hyperspaces toward the smart world with ubiquitous intelligence.

Protein fold recognition programs align a probe amino acid sequence onto a library of representative folds of known structure to identify structural similarities. Substitution matrix is the key to detect the aligned protein similarities. In this paper, a new mixed environment-specific substitution mapping (MESSM) is designed for fold recognition. It has two features: first, with amino acid residue level environmental description, structurally-derived substitution scores are generated using neural networks. the substitution probability of each pair of amino acids at any chosen structural environment can be instantly generated;second, the structurally-derived substitution score is linearly combined with sequence profile from traditional sequences substitution matrices to obtain a positive consensus for fold recognition. By fitting a single parameter in the combined substitution score, benchmark problems have been carried out to test the ability of the MESSM model. the results show that the new fold recognition model with mixed substitution mapping has a better performance than the one with either structure or sequence profile only. Moreover, it is comparable with those more computational intensive, energy potential based fold recognition model. © 2005 IEEE.

Recently, the distributed agent has become one of the most attractive computing paradigms in the distributed computing community. At the same time, P2P computing has drawn great attention as a new trend in the distributed computing world to achieve the goal of "global resource sharing". Especially, mobile agents with the planning capability can be seen to be a suitable approach to perform tasks efficiently in P2P environment. In this paper, we propose an approach to provide planning capability to the P2P agent system for the better performance. the goal of this approach is two-fold: (1) to present a scalable infrastructure, which integrates the P2P agent system with planning services; and (2) to propose the planning algorithm in order to perform P2P tasks efficiently.

this paper discusses a fundamental notion and model of ubiquitous computing technology support learning (uLearning) system. In order to increase learners' social skills and support social interaction among learners, the authors design a collection of support tools; these tools serve for three processes: encounter, communication and collaboration. Furthermore, prototyping implementation of the social interaction support tools is introduced.
