this paper presents an intelligent agent-based resource reservation approach (IARSVP) to support quality of service (QoS) aware packet transmissions for mobile networks. Mobile intelligent agents (MIAs) are characterized by their ability to move across wide-area networks, operate autonomously on foreign hosts, and perform tasks on behalf of the originating hosts. With MIAs, IARSVP can pre-allocate resources in advance for anticipated location an MN may visit next. Because MIAs carries the MN's QoS requirement and administration specification, and mobility association together with the necessary executable codes, they can adjust themselves in accordance with the network topology and current resource usage in locating forwarding points for the anticipated locations the MNs may visit next. therefore, IARSVP can support route optimization and regional registration naturally, avoid redundant resource reservations made in common routes, and discover alternative route dynamically. Furthermore, MIAs can also perform location updates on behalf of MNs. Simulation results show that IARSVP outperforms mobile RSVP and hierarchical mobile RSVP in terms of forced termination, reservation blocking, and session completion probabilities.

Accurate reconstruction of phylogenetic trees very often involves solving hard optimization problems, particularly the maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML) problems. Various heuristics have been devised for solving these two problems; however, they obtain good results within reasonable time only on small datasets. this has been a major impediment for large-scale phylogeny reconstruction, particularly for the effort to assemble the Tree of Life - the evolutionary relationship of all organisms on earth. Roshan et al. recently introduced Rec-I-DCM3, an efficient and accurate meta-method for solving the MP problem on large datasets of up to 14,000 taxa. Nonetheless, a drastic improvement in Rec-I-DCM3's performance is still needed in order to achieve similar (or better) accuracy on datasets at the scale of the Tree of Life. In this paper, we improve the performance of Rec-I-DCM3 via parallelization. Experimental results demonstrate that our parallel method, PRec-I-DCM3, achieves significant improvements, both in speed and accuracy, over its sequential counterpart

the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the National Taiwan University has identified the area of content science for media-rich life, broadly construed, as one of core areas for the college's future directions. One major aspect of this project is to develop the enabling technology for reconfigurable platforms for multimedia applications. Specifically, the goal is to develop reconfigurable platforms of system-on-a-chip (SoC) components for the applications to support the needs of multi-modal multimedia contents and to provide rapid system prototyping. the faculties in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science have formed a multi-discipline team to develop such technology. Our team includes seven faculties and more than thirty students from the college. this short report describes the reconfigurable platform for content science research activities currently underway by our team. Our current activities include to develop the technology to analyze the critical path for avoiding hardware contention, to minimize the use of logic components, to design the multimedia IPs, to optimally route the bus and place the logic units, to design energy efficient cache, to evaluate the performance and power consumption, to design the algorithm for temporal floor-planning/placement.

Peer-to-peer systems (P2P) have attracted much current attention as a popular way to share huge volumes of resources directly within peers. Efficient content search and load balancing are both important research issues in P2P environments, especially in those without centralized global indexes. Although a number of content search schemes are known to alleviate these problems, they cannot provide flexible object searches while balancing the load for content demand in P2P networks, thereby resulting in severe load imbalance and consequently increased user response times. In this paper, we tend to address these problems that take advantage of current domain name server (DNS) architecture by harnessing all available resources in the P2P networks and balance the load without decreasing user response time. We proposed a novel decentralized service discovery mechanism by creating an agent called P2P registry (P2PReg) as a middleware within DNS and peers. In our scheme, each peer is able to register and discover desirable services automatically through current DNS within a short duration in an efficient way with the help of P2PReg. the proposed method does not only perform least searching time and low bandwidth but also balances load in P2P systems in order to avoid hot spot (refers to a node which receives a large volume of requests in rapidly) problems naturally. It is obvious that the more replicas there are, the better the media delivery quality of the specific content object is. We also present the results of simulation work to validate the viability of our approach. Our simulation study showed that serving data discovery over local search is indeed effective in improving the system performance significantly.

Concurrent with the development of wireless equipment, the development of P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing schemes for integrated wireless and wired networks is also needed. However, research on P2P file sharing has mainly been done only for wired environments or only for ad hoc networks. In this paper, we evaluate existing P2P schemes and propose unstructured P2P caching schemes for integrated wired and wireless network environments. We analyze existing unstructured P2P schemes and propose two kinds of extended Freenet caching schemes: WDC (wireless dependent caching) and HNS (half node storing). We evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes through simulation. the performance of WDC is similar to wired Freenet, however it can save bandwidth of wireless links significantly by replicating files only at wired nodes. With the HNS scheme, although it utilizes more bandwidth than WDC, nodes keep only half of the files of wired Freenet, and both the number of hops for success and the failure rate decrease. therefore, the WDC scheme is appropriate for bandwidth-limited wireless links or integrated environments with a low proportion of wireless nodes, while the HNS scheme can provide a smaller number of hops to success and higher success rate as compared to wired Freenet.

A parallel solution-adaptive scheme for multi-phase core flows in solid propellant rocket motors

the development of a parallel adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) scheme is described for solving the governing equations for multi-phase (gas-particle) core flows in solid propellant rocket motors (SRMs). An Eulerian formulation is used to describe the coupled motion between the gas and particle phases. A cell-centred upwind finite-volume discretization and the use of limited linear reconstruction, Riemann solver based flux functions for the gas and particle phases, and explicit multi-stage time-stepping allows for high solution accuracy and computational robustness. A Riemann problem is formulated for prescribing boundary data at the burning surface and a mesh adjustment algorithm has been implemented to adjust the multi-block quadrilateral mesh to the combustion interface. A flexible block-based hierarchical data structure is used to facilitate automatic solution-directed mesh adaptation according to physics-based refinement criteria. Efficient and scalable parallel implementations are achieved with domain decomposition on distributed memory multi-processor architectures. Numerical results are described to demonstrate the capabilities of the approach for predicting SRM core flows.

the presented design framework stems from verifiable formal specifications as a launching paradigm, from Internet-based distributed HW/SW components with multicast as an architectural paradigm, and from reusability paradigm supporting all phases of the design process ranging from specification to implementation and testing. this paper presents concepts of a specification-driven design framework aiming at IEEE 1451-based embedded distributed systems that consist of smart components connected to Internet. It deals with an integrated networking framework stemming from the IEEE 1451.1 object-based networking model, complemented by the Internet Protocol (IP) multicast that mediates efficient and unified access from Internet to distributed components. the kernel of the paper deals with tools and techniques aiming to prop specification and design life cycle phases of applications under development.

distributed Shortest-Positioning Time First (D-SPTF) is a request distribution protocol for decentralized systems of storage servers. D-SPTF exploits high-speed interconnects to dynamically select which server, among those with a replica, should service each read request. In doing so, it simultaneously balances load, exploits the aggregate cache capacity, and reduces positioning times for cache misses. For network latencies expected in storage clusters (e.g., 10-200μs), D-SPTF performs as well as would a hypothetical centralized system with the same collection of CPU, cache, and disk resources. Compared to popular decentralized approaches, D-SPTF achieves up to 65% higher throughput and adapts more cleanly to heterogenous server capabilities.

We propose a novel distributed algorithm to achieve a weighted max-min sharing of the network capacity. We present the Weight Proportional Max-Min policy (WPMM) that supports a minimal rate requirement and an optional maximal rate constraint and allocates network bandwidth among all aggregates based on a weight associated with each one. Our algorithm achieves this policy for IP/MPLS networks using the RSVP-TE signalling protocol. It uses per-LSP accounting in each node to keep track of the state information of each LSP. It uses a novel explicit bottleneck link strategy and a different control architecture in which we update the control packet in the forward path. Simulations show that these two elements improve substantially the convergence time compared to algorithms designed for ATM networks.
