Metadata for the World Wide Web is important, but metadata for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks is absolutely crucial. In this paper we discuss the open source project Edutella which builds upon metadata standards defined for the WWW and aims to provide an RDF-based metadata infrastructure for P2P applications, building on the recently announced JXTA Framework. We describe the goals and main services this infrastructure will provide and the architecture to connect Edutella Peers based on exchange of RDF metadata. As the query service is one of the core services of Edutella, upon which other services are built, we specify in detail the Edutella Common Data Model (ECDM) as basis for the Edutella query exchange language (RDF-QEL-i) and format implementing distributed queries over the Edutella network. Finally, we shortly discuss registration and mediation services, and introduce the prototype and application scenario for our current Edutella aware peers.

Network and server-centric computing paradigms are quickly returning to being the dominant methods by which we use computers. Web applications are so prevalent that the role of a PC today has been largely reduced to a terminal for running a client or viewer such as a Web browser. Implementers of network-centric applications typically rely on the limited capabilities of HTML, employing proprietary "plug ins" or transmitting the binary image of an entire application that will be executed on the client. Alternatively, implementers can develop without regard for remote use, requiring users who wish to run such applications on a remote server to rely on a system that creates a virtual frame buffer on the server, and transmits a copy of its raster image to the local *** review some of the problems that these current approaches pose, and show how they can be solved by developing a distributed user interface toolkit. A distributed user interface toolkit applies techniques to the high level components of a toolkit that are similar to those used at a low level in the X Window System. As an example of this approach, we present RemoteJFC, a working distributed user interface toolkit that makes it possible to develop thin-client applications using a distributed version of the Java Foundation Classes.

the MObile Teamwork Infrastructure for Organizations networking (MOTION) 1 service platform that we have designed and implemented addresses an emerging requirement in the daily business of large, distributed enterprises: support for mobile teamwork. Employees are often on the move and use a wide range of computing devices such as WAP phones, PDAs, notebooks and desktop computers. the service architecture that we have developed supports mobile teamwork by providing multi-device service access, XML meta data for information sharing and locating, and the XML Query Language (XQL) for distributed searches and publish/subscribe. We present the solution that we adopted in our prototype, analyze the shortcomings of this approach and based on our evaluation experiences, list the requirements for a publish-subscribe middleware for collaborative mobile working.

Energy efficiency is a measure of performance in wireless networks. therefore, controlling the transmitter power at a given node increases not only the operating life of the battery but also the overall system capacity, by successfully admitting new links between a source and a destination. It is essential to find effective means of power control of point-to-point, broadcasting and multicasting scenarios. the wireless networking presents formidable challenges and we consider the problem of unicast or point to point (peer-to-peer) communication in wireless networks in the presence of other nodes. We study the feasibility of admitting new links in an operating area in a wireless network while maintaining the quality of service (QoS) in terms of Signal to Interference ratio (SIR) for each link. the SIR is maintained by adjusting the transmitter power levels at each source for a given link. distributed power control (DPC) is a natural choice for such purposes because, unlike centralized power control, DPC should be able to adjust the power levels of each transmitted signal using local measurements, so that in a reasonable time, all nodes/links will maintain the desired SIR. In this paper, we present a suite of DPC schemes using both the state space and optimal control methodology in discrete-time. Further, we prove the convergence of the overall network with our algorithm using Lyapunov stability analysis in comparison with an available DPC scheme in the literature. We present simulation results and comparisons to one of the well known DPC scheme in the literature for point to point communications in the case of overlapping scenario.

Traffic grooming in optical networks employing wavelength division multiplexing has gained prominence due to the prevailing sub-wavelength capacity requirements of users. One approach to achieving wavelength sharing is through time division multiplexing. Connection requests can have varying number of time slot requirements. Analytical modeling for computing blocking performance of establishing multi-rate connections in WDM grooming networks involves extensive combinatorial complexity thus requires prohibitively large state-space for solution. In this paper, we develop an analytical model that employs an approximation to the exact distribution of number of calls of a certain bandwidth requirement on a wavelength. We validate the approximation through simulation results for two different networks that have high and low link-load correlation. It is observed that up to an order of magnitude performance improvement is obtained by improving the grooming capability in the network for calls that require two time slots.

Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) has been proposed as one solution to accommodate the frequent movements of Mobile Terminals (MTs) in IP-based mobile communication networks. HMIPv6 utilizes a Mobility Anchor Point (MAP) that allows the network to manage the mobility of MTs without causing any overflow of outgoing and incoming messages beyond the network perimeter. However, there is a problem in applying HMIPv6 to a wide area network having a multilevel hierarchy. the distribution of several MAPs within such a network can be used as a means to optimize the different mobility scenarios experienced by MTs. However, HMIPv6 allows MTs to select their own MAP, so with HMIPv6, the MTs may not select the MAP that would be chosen in an optimized scheme. this may cause load concentration at a particular MAP and/or overflow of signaling messages to and from outside networks. In this paper, an effective IP mobility management method is proposed that focuses on the speed of movement of the MTs. It reduces the number of signaling messages to and from outside networks without suffering from load concentration at particular MAPs, and we show that the proposed method works effectively from simulation experiments.

With the advent of computational grids, networking performance over the wide-area network (WAN) has become a critical component in the grid infrastructure. Unfortunately, many high-performance grid applications only use a small fraction of the available bandwidth because operating systems and their associated protocol stacks are still tuned for yesterdays WAN speeds. As a result, network gurus undertake the tedious process of manually, tuning system buffers to allow TCP flow control to scale to today's WAN grid environments. Although recent research has shown how to set the size of these system buffers automatically at connection set-up, the buffer sizes are only appropriate at the beginning of the connection's lifetime. To address these problems, we describe an automated and scalable technique called dynamic right-sizing. We implement this technique in user space (in particular for bulk-data transfer) so that end users do not have to modify the kernel to achieve a significant increase in throughput.

Clusters of workstations have become a cost-effective means of performing scientific computations. However, large network latencies, resource sharing, and heterogeneity found in networks of clusters and Grids can impede the performance of applications not specifically tailored for use in such environments. A typical example is the traditional fine grain implementations of Krylov-like iterative methods, a central component in many scientific applications. To exploit the potential of these environments, advances in networking technology must be complemented by advances in parallel algorithmic design. In this paper, we present an algorithmic technique that increases the granularity of parallel block iterative methods by inducing additional work during the preconditioning (inexact solution) phase of the iteration. During this phase, each vector in the block is preconditioned by a different subgroup of processors, yielding a much coarser granularity. the rest of the method comprises a small portion of the total time and is still implemented in fine grain. We call this combination of fine and coarse grain parallelism multigrain. We apply this idea to the block Jacobi-Davidson eigensolver, and present experimental data that shows the significant reduction of latency effects on networks of clusters of roughly equal capacity and size. We conclude with a discussion on how multigrain can be applied dynamically based on runtime network performance monitoring.

Fault-tolerant parallel scheduling of tasks on a heterogeneous high-performance workstation cluster

We propose a new approach, called cluster-based search (CBS), for scheduling large task graphs in parallel on a heterogeneous cluster of workstations connected by a high-speed network (e.g., using an ATM switch at OC-3 speed). the CBS algorithm uses a parallel random neighborhood search which works by refining multiple different initial schedules simultaneously using different workstations. the workstations communicate periodically to exchange their best solutions found thus far in order to direct the search to more promising regions in the search space. Heterogeneity of machines is exploited by the biased partitioning of the search space. the parallel random neighborhood search is fault-tolerant in that the workload of a failed workstation is automatically redistributed to other workstations so that the search can continue. We have implemented the CBS algorithm as a core function of our on-going development of SSI middleware for a Sun workstation cluster.

this paper describes a prototype computational Web Portal for the distributed Marine Environment Forecast System (DMEFS). DMEFS is a research framework to develop and operate validated Climate-Weather-Ocean models. the DMEFS portal is implemented as a multitier system. the Web Browser based front-end allows for visual composition of complex computational tasks and transition of these tasks for operational use, as well as for analysis of the results. the middle-tier is split into Java Server Pages based Web tier responsible for request processing and dynamic generation of responses, and Enterprise Java Beans based application server. the EJB container is populated by a hierarchy of entity beans representing the state of the system or acting as proxies of services rendered by the back end. Operations on the entity beans are implemented as session beans. this design makes it possible to separate user requests (in terms of application independent task specification) from the back end resource allocation (through platform independent resource specification). the middle-tier provides a transparent mapping between task and resource specification, hiding complexity of the heterogeneous back-end system from the user. the DMEFS portal provides a seamless and secure access to the computational resources as well as provides a simpler and easy to use interface to setup, stage, and deploy complex scientific and engineering simulations.
