Mobile Cloud computing (MCC) requires an infrastructure that is combining the capabilities of resource-constrained but mobile and context-aware devices with that of immovable but powerful resources in the cloud. Application execution shall be boosted and battery consumption reduced. Our goal is to relieve mobile devices by enabling applications to cooperate transparently with components provided by third parties remotely, locally, or both. For this purpose, we developed SAM-the Semantic-aware Middleware- and the SAM Store. the latter resembles a registry. It allows component providers to publish semantically enriched interfaces and to offer corresponding local and remote implementations. SAM makes use of the SAM Store to match local interprocess communication (IPC) messages transparently against local and remote components. this architecture facilitates the integration of powerful, but resource-intensive remote components, which may be prioritized over local ones, and fosters various patterns of cooperation that demonstrate useful solutions in the area of MCC. By means of a realistic scenario, our evaluation proves the efficiency with respect to latency and practicality.

Effective virtual machine placement algorithms can improve network resource utilization in cloud data centers. In order to design a more effective VM placement algorithm, we usually rely on a large-scale experimental platform to evaluate and verify its performance. However, large-scale experiment may have a huge impact on data center network, which makes it very unlikely to happen. therefore, researchers need an experiment platform that can support large-scale environment to meet the above requirements. In order to evaluate the performance of virtual machine deployment algorithm, this paper first designs and implements a cloud data center network experiment system, WebCloudSim, which can support the joint experimental verification of real environment and simulation environment. then, based on WebCloudSim, the paper implements three classic algorithms for virtual machine deployment, and verifies and analyzes the results. the experimental results show that WebCloudSim can effectively support the performance evaluation of virtual machine placement algorithm.

Edge computing is the emerging architectural paradigm extending cloud technologies to the logical extremes of the network for on-demand and delay-sensitive services. However, once service placement on edge-enabling resources has been dealt with, a new challenge arises: how to process enormous volumes of streaming data to provide query-driven analytics while still satisfying the delay-critical servicing requirements. To overcome this challenge we introduce StreamSight, a framework for edgeenabled IoT services which provides a rich and declarative query model abstraction for expressing complex analytics on monitoring data streams and then dynamically compiling these queries into stream processing jobs for continuous execution on distributed processing engines. To overcome the resource restrictive barriers in edge computing deployments, StreamSight outputs the query execution plan so that intermediate results are reused and not continuously recomputed. In turn, StreamSight enables users to express various optimization strategies (e.g., approximate answers, query prioritization) and constraints (e.g., sample size, error-bounds) so that delay-sensitive requirements relevant to the deployment are not violated. We evaluate our framework on Apache Spark with real-world workloads and show that leveraging StreamSight can significantly increase performance by at least 4x while still satisfying all accuracy guarantees.

Real-time data processing is often a necessity as it can provide insights that have less value if discovered off-line or after the fact. However, large-scale stream processing systems are non-trivial to build and deploy. While there are many frameworks that allow users to create large-scale distributed systems, there remains many challenges in understanding the performance, cost of deployment and considerations and impact of potential (partial) outages on real-time systems performance. Our work considers the performance of Cloud-based stream processing systems in terms of back-pressure and expected utilization. the performance of an exemplar stream application is explored using different Cloud-based virtual machine resources and where the scale of deployment and cost benefits are taken into consideration in relation to the overall performance. To achieve this, we develop an algorithm based on queueing theory to predict the throughput and latency of stream data processing while supporting system stability. Our methodology for making fundamental measurements is applicable to mainstream stream processing frameworks such as Apache Storm and Heron. the method is especially suitable for large-scale distributed stream processing where jobs can run for extended time periods. We benchmark the performance of the system on the national research cloud of Australia (Nectar), and present a performance analysis based on estimating the overall effective utilization.

Recent technological trends such as Industry 4.0 introduced new challenges that push the limit of current computer and networking architectures. It demands the connection of thousands, if not millions, of sensors and mobile devices coupled with optimized operations to automate various operations inside factories. this led to the new era of Internet of things (IoTs) where lightweight (possibly mobile) devices are envisaged to send vital information to cloud data centres (mobile and fixed infrastructure) for further processing and decision making. Current cloud computing systems, however, are not able to efficiently digest and process collected information from IoT devices with strict response requests for two main reasons: (1) the round trip delay between IoT devices to the processing engines of cloud could exceed an application's threshold, and (2) network links to cloud resources could be clogged when IoT devices flush data in an uncoordinated fashion. Fog and Edge computing are two solutions to address both of the previous problems. though designed to alleviate the same problem, they have fundamental differences that make adopting one more applicable than the other. this talk will overview the practical concerns of today's IoT implementations through tackling the most important obstacles that hinder their adoption. First, production of applicable network (fixed and mobile) latency models to capture all elements of IoT platforms. Second, building a holistic platform to orchestrate various inter-related layers of IoT platforms, including connectivity, big-data analytics, and workload optimization. third, proposing viable solutions that can be actually implemented in IoT-based applications. More details will be provided about the above issues during the talk.

YARN is a prevailing central resource management architecture, which allocates a group of resources to each application. the resource group is consistent with locality requests of tasks in applications. But each application allocates the resources in the resource group to each task according to locality capacities of resources. Different rules in two levels of resource allocations lead to mismatched localities for tasks, which hurts performances of applications. there is a lack of researches about mismatched localities for tasks in YARN. this paper designs a scheduler to improve mismatched localities without dragging applications. the locality capacities of resources becomes unified allocation rule. Resources are classified by the locality requests of tasks, so that resources in the same category are versatile for tasks with the same level of locality request. this classification decreases the mismatched probability. In addition, the improvement of mismatched localities makes compromises between different applications. Every application is assigned with proportional resources in different locality scales for improved performances. Compared to baseline schedulers, there are 2 times data-local tasks and more than 30% rack-local tasks. the decreases makespan of applications by a maximum 66.7% and network traffic by an utmost 80%.

With the fast development of cloud computing, cloud demand has exploded. In order to meet the primary performance needs of cloud users, cloud service providers need to carry out load balancing policy for virtual machines (VMs), which exacerbates the co -residence threats. In this paper, we try to solve the problem from the perspective of VM management, that is to say, we optimize the VM management policy to reduce the chances that ordinary VMs resident with the malicious VMs. In previous researches, the basic idea is to make the attack as difficult as possible during the placement, but there is little discussion about how to retrieve after the attacker successfully co -resident. Compared with them, for the first time we introduce the concept of Familiarity to mark cloud users and their VMs, and then design a secure VM placement algorithm and a secure load balancing algorithm. these algorithms not only make the co -residence difficult but can handle the security issue after it happens. After evaluation, our algorithms can well achieve the expectations.

Freshness of data is an important performance metric for real-time applications, which can be measured by age-of-information. For computation-intensive messages, the embedded information is not available until being computed. In this paper, we study the age-of-information for computation-intensive messages, which are firstly transmitted to a mobile edge server, and then processed there to extract the embedded information. the packet generation follows zero-wait policy, by which a new packet is generated when the last one is just delivered to the edge server. the queue in front of the edge server adopts one-packet-buffer replacement policy, meaning that only the latest received packet is preserved. We derive the expression of average age-of-information for exponentially distributed transmission time and computing time. Numerical results show that the average age with packet replacement is smaller than that without packet replacement, especially when transmission rate is close to or greater than computing rate. In addition, the region where edge computing outperforms local computing is characterized.

Reliable deployment of services is especially challenging in virtualized infrastructures, where the deep technological stack and the multitude of components necessitate automatic anomaly detection and remediation mechanisms. Traditional monitoring solutions observe the system and generate alarms when the collected metrics exceed predefined thresholds. the fixed thresholds rely on expert knowledge and can lead to numerous false alarms, while abnormal behavior that spans over multiple metrics, components, or system layers, may not be detected. We propose to use an unsupervised online clustering algorithm to create a model of the normal behavior of each monitored component with minimal human interaction and no impact on the monitored system. When an anomaly is detected, a human administrator or automatic remediation system can subsequently revert the component into a normal state. An experimental evaluation resulted in a high accuracy of our approach, indicating that it is suitable for anomaly detection in productive systems.

Modern mobile devices feature ever increasing computational, sensory, and network resources, which can be shared to execute tasks on behalf of nearby devices. Mobile device clouds (MDCs) facilitate such distributed execution by exposing the collective resources of a set of nearby mobile devices through a unified programming interface. However, the true potential of MDCs remains untapped, as they fail to provide practical programming support for developers to execute distributed functionalities. To address this problem, we introduce a microservice- based Programmable MDC architecture (PMDC), highly customized for the unique features of MDC environments. PMDC conveniently provisions functionalities as microservices, which are deployed on MDC devices on demand. PMDC features a novel domain specific language that provides abstractions for concisely expressing finegrained control over the procedures of device capability sharing and microservice execution. Furthermore, PMDC introduces a new system component- the microservice gateway, which reconciles the supply of available device capabilities and the demand for microservice execution to distribute microservices within an MDC. Our evaluation shows that MDCs, expressed by developers through the PMDC declarative programming interface, exhibit low energy consumption and high performance.
