In order to support Precision Formation Flying (PFF) mission, distributed spacecraft requires inter-satellites communication links with reliable and efficient performance. An optimized Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is used to provide high-quality broadband service with high reliability and system capacity. It separates the whole network into two sub-networks, including a control sub-network in mesh architecture for time-critical control messages, and a data sub-network in Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) architecture for high speed data messages. In this paper, an event-driven Medium Access Control (E-MAC) protocol for control sub-network to deal with PFF high priority messages is proposed. E-MAC protocol is based on the event-driven mechanism: spacecraft adjust the contention parameters to the arrival of primary events and secondary events. Analysis and simulation results indicate that the proposed E-MAC protocol can achieve real-time ability as well as spectrum and energy efficiency. © 2018, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

CockroachDB is an open-source database, providing transactional access to data in a distributed setting. CockroachDB employs a multi-version timestamp ordering protocol to provide serializability. this provides a simple mechanism to enforce serializability, but the static timestamp allocation scheme can lead to a high number of aborts under contention. We aim to reduce the aborts for transactional workloads by integrating a dynamic timestamp ordering based concurrency control scheme in CockroachDB. Dynamic timestamp ordering scheme tries to reduce the number of aborts by allocating timestamps dynamically based on the conflicts of accessed data items. this gives a transaction higher chance to fit on a logically serializable timeline, especially in workloads with high contention.

this paper presents preliminary results from our on-going research for ensuring stable performance of co-located distributed cloud services in a resource-efficient way. It is based on using a real-time CPU scheduling policy to achieve a fine-grain control of the temporal interferences among real-time services running in co-located containers. We present results obtained applying the method to a synthetic application running within LXC containers on Linux, where a modified kernel has been used that includes our real-time scheduling policy.

this paper proposes new variable regularized (VR) partial update (PU) affine projection algorithms (APAs) for distributed estimation over adaptive networks. they extend the conventional diffuse PU-APAs (Diff-PU-APAs) by imposing a regularization parameter to mitigate possible impairments, such as modeling uncertainties and lacking of excitation, and to deal with sparse channel estimation problems. In addition, the mean and mean square convergence performance of the proposed algorithms is studied, which provides convergence conditions of the proposed algorithms. the performance of the Diff-VR-PU-APAs is demonstrated by several computer simulations in distributed networks.

the aim of this paper is to propose an Internet of things system that collects, sends, stores, and publishes relevant data using a Raspberry Pi as the smart sensor. distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) from BigchainDB and IOTA are used to store data in a blockchain-like database, and to publish a temporal statistic data summary respectively, in addition to store the data streams in a SQL database. the collection, storage, and publication of the data is free and almost instantaneous. this system can become a source of evidences to different types of stakeholders all around specific businesses getting benefits from keeping the level of trust along its value chain.

Advances in medical technology is not sufficient alone to satisfy the growing and emerging needs such as improving quality of life, providing healthcare services tailored to each individual, ensuring efficient management of care and creating sustainable social healthcare. there is a potential for substantially enhancing healthcare services by integrating information technologies, social networking technologies, digitization and control of biomedical devices, and utilization of big data technologies as well as machine learning techniques. Today, data has become more ubiquitous and accessible by virtue of advancements in smart sensor and actuator technologies. this in turn allow us to collect significant amount of data from biomedical devices and automate certain healthcare functions. In order to get maximum benefit from the generated data, there is a need to develop new models and distributed data analytics approaches for health industry. Big data has the potential to improve the quality and efficiency of health care services as well as reducing the maintenance costs by minimizing the risks related with malfunctions of biomedical devices. Hospitals grasp this noteworthy potential and convert collected data into valuable information that can be used for several purposes including management of biomedical device maintenance. To this end, in this study, by leveraging the latest advancements in big data analytics technologies, we propose a scalable predictive maintenance architecture for healthcare domain. We also discussed the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the proposed architecture in the healthcare domain.

While blockchains and smart contracts are primarily known for their use as the technologies underlying cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, these technologies also have applicability in other areas. In this paper, we present an application of smart contracts running on a permissioned distributed ledger (essentially a private blockchain where only credentialed participants are allowed to read and write) to managing tenant and service accounts in a cloud computing data center. the system is called Saranyu and it supports four services: identity management, authentication, authorization, and charging. Identity management and authentication are handled using client-generated public/private key pairs in the usual fashion. Authorization is handled as a contract from a grantee of service access rights to a recipient which is a tenant or other service. Charging is supported by Saranyu integration with payment gateways for payments related to service resource usage. We describe an implementation of Saranyu on top of the Quorum blockchain system. We believe the security, non-repudiation, tamper-resistance, and easy transaction history access brought by blockchain technology will increase transparency and trust in cloud tenant and service management and that the fundamentally distributed nature of the blockchain will make Saranyu an excellent match with developing distributed cloud architectures.

Serverless computing provides a small runtime container to execute lines of codes without infrastructure management which is similar to Platform as a Service (PaaS) but a functional level. Amazon started the event-driven compute named Lambda functions in 2014 with a 25 concurrent limitation, but it now supports at least a thousand of concurrent invocation to process event messages generated by resources like databases, storage and system logs. Other providers, i.e., Google, Microsoft, and IBM offer a dynamic scaling manager to handle parallel requests of stateless functions in which additional containers are provisioning on new compute nodes for distribution. However, while functions are often developed for microservices and lightweight workload, they are associated with distributed data processing using the concurrent invocations. We claim that the current serverless computing environments can support dynamic applications in parallel when a partitioned task is executable on a small function instance. We present results of throughput, network bandwidth, a file I/O and compute performance regarding the concurrent invocations. We deployed a series of functions for distributed data processing to address the elasticity and then demonstrated the differences between serverless computing and virtual machines for cost efficiency and resource utilization.

We have developed HyperLoom - a platform for defining and executing scientific workflows in large-scale HPC systems. the computational tasks in such workflows often have non-trivial dependency patterns, unknown execution time and unknown sizes of generated outputs. HyperLoom enables to efficiently execute the workflows respecting task requirements and cluster resources agnostically to the shape or size of the workflow. Although HPC infrastructures provide an unbeatable performance, they may be unavailable or too expensive especially for small to medium workloads. Moreover, for some workloads, due to HPCs not very flexible resource allocation policy, the system energy efficiency may not be optimal at some stages of the execution. In contrast, current public cloud providers such as Amazon, Google or Exoscale allow users a comfortable and elastic way of deploying, scaling and disposing a virtualized cluster of almost any size. In this paper, we describe HyperLoom virtualization and evaluate its performance in a virtualized environment using workflows of various shapes and sizes. Finally, we discuss the Hyperloom potential for its expansion to cloud environments.

this paper puts forward a practical application of emergent cloud computing technologies that addresses is-sues encountered in the earth observation and meteorological domain. Ever increasing satellite capture technologies result in larger and larger data that is being processed by more and more complex algorithms for the generation of weather reports, forecasts, etc. Companies and researchers that work on this kind of processing chains struggle with storage and computing issues that cloud computing technologies can overcome. this kind of architecture becomes all the more relevant as cloud providers propose accessible pay-per-use services that make such infrastructure economically viable. this article relates the complexity of satellite data processing with the solutions that cloud computing can offer. It details use cases that highlight the need for a centralized access to data between processing resources with localization constraints, for scalable storage and distributed computing capabilities, and for hardware optimization to minimize both costs and processing time.
