Emerging edge/fog computing models have fostered new types of applications whose software components and dependent services are provisioned across distributed edge and cloud infrastructures. the design of mobile edge cloud systems is complex, thus it is important to understand suitable deployment models and test them. Since mobile edge cloud computing and its deployments are quite new, there is a lack of techniques and knowledge about possible deployments, configurations, and performance evaluation. In this paper, we present our experiences on studying the impact of performance and data quality for mobile edge cloud systems. We use a mobile edge cloud cornering assistance (MECCA) application to examine various performance and data quality impact. In this paper, we explain how by using MECCA to test performance and data quality, we draw key issues and steps in analytics of edge cloud applications and lessons learned for mobile edge computing application testing.

In distributed environments, entities are distributed among different security domains and they do not have prior knowledge of one another. In this setting, distributed systems and their security components such as entities, certificates, credentials, policies and trust values are dynamic and constantly changing. thus, access control models and trust approaches are necessary to support the dynamic and distributed features of such systems and their components. the objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive survey about the security research in distributed systems. We have reviewed the dynamic and distributed nature of the components and evaluation methods of major authorization systems and access control models in existing literature. Based on this overview, we present a survey of selected trust schemes. We provide a categorization for recommendation-based and reputation-based trust models based on trust evaluation. Additionally, we use credential or certificate storage and chain discovery methods for categorizing evidence based and policy-based trust models. this work can be used as a reference guide to understand authorization and trust management and to further research fully decentralized and distributed authorization systems.

Effective virtual machine placement algorithms can improve network resource utilization in cloud data centers. In order to design a more effective VM placement algorithm, we usually rely on a large-scale experimental platform to evaluate and verify its performance. However, large-scale experiment may have a huge impact on data center network, which makes it very unlikely to happen. therefore, researchers need an experiment platform that can support large-scale environment to meet the above requirements. In order to evaluate the performance of virtual machine deployment algorithm, this paper first designs and implements a cloud data center network experiment system, WebCloudSim, which can support the joint experimental verification of real environment and simulation environment. then, based on WebCloudSim, the paper implements three classic algorithms for virtual machine deployment, and verifies and analyzes the results. the experimental results show that WebCloudSim can effectively support the performance evaluation of virtual machine placement algorithm.

We present COOL, a simple and generic structure for MPI collective operations. COOL enables highly efficient designs for all collective operations in the cloud. We then present a system design based on COOL that implements frequently used collective operations. Our design efficiently uses the intra-rack network while minimizing cross-rack communication, thus improving the application performance and scalability. We use recent software-defined networking capabilities to build optimal network paths for I/O intensive collective operations. Our analytical evaluation shows that our design imposes the least possible network overhead across racks. Furthermore, when compared with OpenMPI and MPICH, our design reduces the number of steps to only three, decreases the number of exchanged messages by a factor of N, the total number of processes, and reduces the network load by up to an order of magnitude. these significant improvements come at the cost of a modest increase in the computation load on a few processes.

Serverless computing, also known as Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) or Cloud Functions, is a new method of running distributed applications by executing functions on the infrastructure of cloud providers. Although it frees the developers from managing servers, there are still decisions to be made regarding selection of function configurations based on the desired performance and cost. the billing model of this approach considers time of execution, measured in 100ms units, as well as the size of the memory allocated per function. In this paper, we look into the problem of scheduling scientific workflows, which are applications consisting of multiple tasks connected into a dependency graph. We discuss challenges related to workflow scheduling and propose the Serverless Deadline-Budget Workflow Scheduling (SDBWS) algorithm adapted to serverless platforms. We present preliminary experiments with a small-scale Montage workflow run on the AWS Lambda infrastructure.

In cloud computing environments, data centers can provide high-performance computing resources and distributed storage space. Scientific workflows often need to be implemented across multiple data centers, where copious amounts of application data are stored. Moving data across geographically distributed data centers leads to intolerable delays and hinders the efficient execution of scientific workflows, which are large-scale data-intensive. Reasonable data placement can reduce data scheduling between the data centers effectively. In this paper, an adaptive discrete particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm based on genetic algorithm has been proposed to decrease the number of data transmissions across data centers. the algorithm overcame the premature convergence defect of PSO by introducing the mutation and crossover of genetic algorithm. Moreover, it effectively improved the diversity in the process of population evolution. Compared with the previous work, the simulation results showed that the proposed strategy greatly reduced the volume of data transfer while reducing the number of data movement across data centers.

Using trust relationships between nodes, decision making in a peer-to-peer distributed network like MANET possible to improve. Uncertainty plays an important role in such decision making process. Our earlier research work viz. Sandeep et al. [1] proposed Uncertainty Analysis Framework (UAF) for MANET and integrated it with different trust variants representing direct trust, indirect trust and global trust. the research work explored relationship between uncertainty and trust. the UAF is found useful to quantify Belief, Disbelief, and Uncertainty (BDU) of a network. the earlier research work measured impact of direct, indirect and global trust on the performance of the routing protocols. the proposed work is useful to get more insights about - MANET working, effectiveness of trust based algorithms and impact of uncertainty on the behavior of MANET. this research work analyses UAF behavior and performance of indirect and global trust-based routing protocols using different test conditions. the proposed research work observed that, uncertainty reduces drastically when trust is used for decision making in routing protocols. It is also observed approximately 140 seconds are required to identify good and misbehaving nodes in the network. Belief, Disbelief and Uncertainty values are fairly stable after 140 seconds from network bootstrap. Indirect trust model is found more useful for open and distributed peer-to-peer networks.

Modern mobile devices feature ever increasing computational, sensory, and network resources, which can be shared to execute tasks on behalf of nearby devices. Mobile device clouds (MDCs) facilitate such distributed execution by exposing the collective resources of a set of nearby mobile devices through a unified programming interface. However, the true potential of MDCs remains untapped, as they fail to provide practical programming support for developers to execute distributed functionalities. To address this problem, we introduce a microservice-based Programmable MDC architecture (PMDC), highly customized for the unique features of MDC environments. PMDC conveniently provisions functionalities as microservices, which are deployed on MDC devices on demand. PMDC features a novel domain specific language that provides abstractions for concisely expressing fine-grained control over the procedures of device capability sharing and microservice execution. Furthermore, PMDC introduces a new system component-the microservice gateway, which reconciles the supply of available device capabilities and the demand for microservice execution to distribute microservices within an MDC. Our evaluation shows that MDCs, expressed by developers through the PMDC declarative programming interface, exhibit low energy consumption and high performance.

the current trend in industry to augment lightweight and inexpensive robots with cloud-based distributed intelligence for executing complex, collaborative tasks has led to the emergence of fields like Internet of Robotic things (IoRT) and Cloud Robotics (CR). However, reliable execution of orchestrated jobs in a networked setup with chances of infrastructural failures remains a concern. the only perceivable solution is resource redundancy, where the traditional approaches are not cost effective for tightly budgeted IoRT/CR deployments. In this work, an agile redundancy model, At most M, is proposed, which provides a handle to tune the trade-off between resource cost and reliability. the model is evaluated in a simulated warehouse environment with robots, drones, AGVs and private cloud servers deployed to accomplish multiple pickup and delivery tasks. the benefits w.r.t. resource usage cost by using our optimized redundancy model is illustrated and the trade-off between cost and reliability is demonstrated.
