In this work we introduce a fast big data approach for road incident hot spot identification using Apache Spark. We implement an existing immuno-inspired mechanism, namely SeleSup, as a series of MapReduce-like operations. SeleSup is composed of a number of iterations that remove data redundancies and result in the detection of areas of high likelihood of vehicles incidents. It has been successfully applied to large datasets, however, as the size of the data increases to millions of instances, its performance drops significantly. Our objective therefore is to re-conceptualise the method for big data. In this paper we present the new implementation, the challenges faced when converting the method for the Apache Spark platform as well as the outcomes obtained. For our experiments we employ a large dataset containing hundreds of thousands of Heavy Good Vehicles incidents, collected via telematics. Results show a significant improvement in performance with no detriment to the accuracy of the method.

We consider a System of Systems (SoS) wherein each system S-i, i = 1, 2, ... , N, is composed of discrete cyber and physical components which can be attacked and reinforced. We characterize the disruptions using aggregate failure correlation functions given by the conditional failure probability of SoS given the failure of an individual system. We formulate the problem of ensuring the survival of SoS as a game between an attacker and a provider, each with a utility function composed of a survival probability term and a cost term, both expressed in terms of the number of components attacked and reinforced. the survival probabilities of systems satisfy simple product-form, first-order differential conditions, which simplify the Nash Equilibrium (NE) conditions. We derive the sensitivity functions that highlight the dependence of SoS survival probability at NE on cost terms, correlation functions, and individual system survival probabilities. We apply these results to a simplified model of distributed cloud computing infrastructure.

Accountability plays a key role in dependable distributed systems. It allows to detect, isolate and churn malicious/selfish nodes that deviate from a prescribed protocol. To achieve these properties, several accountable systems use at their core cryptographic primitives that produce non-repudiable evidence of inconsistent or incorrect behavior. In this paper, we show how selfish and colluding nodes can exploit the use of cryptographic digests in accountability protocols to mount what we call a duck attack. In a duck attack, selfish and colluding nodes exploit the use of cryptographic digests to alter the transmission of messages while masquerading as honest entities. the end result is that their selfish behavior remains undetected. this undermines the security guarantees of the accountability protocols. We first discover the duck attack while analyzing PAG - a custom cryptographic protocol to build accountable systems presented at ICDCS 2016. We later discover that accountable distributed systems based on a secure log (essentially a hash-based data structure) are also vulnerable to the duck attack and apply it on AcTinG - a protocol presented at SRDS 2014. To defeat our attack, we modify the underlying secure log to have high-order dependency on the messages stored in it.

the new internet of things paradigm allows for small devices with sensing, processing and communication capabilities to be designed, which enable the development of sensors, embedded devices and other 'things' ready to understand the environment. In this paper, a distributed model and an architecture for internet of things paradigm is proposed to perform complex computational tasks and run advanced applications. this novel computing system defines a network design with different levels which combines sensing and processing capabilities based on the Mobile Cloud computing paradigm.

Efficient and timely misinformation blocking under varying cost constraints

Online Social Networks (OSNs) constitute one of the most important communication channels and are widely utilized as news sources. Information spreads widely and rapidly in OSNs through the word-of-mouth effect. However, it is not uncommon for misinformation to propagate in the network. Misinformation dissemination may lead to undesirable effects, especially in cases where the non-credible information concerns emergency events. therefore, it is essential to timely limit the propagation of misinformation. Towards this goal, we suggest a novel propagation model, namely the Dynamic Linear threshold (DLT) model, that effectively captures the way contradictory information, i.e., misinformation and credible information, propagates in the network. the DLT model considers the probability of a user alternating between competing beliefs, assisting in either the propagation of misinformation or credible news. Based on the DLT model, we formulate an optimization problem that under cost constraints aims in identifying the most appropriate subset of users to limit the spread of misinformation by initiating the propagation of credible information. We prove that our suggested approach achieves an approximation ratio of 1−1/e and demonstrate by experimental evaluation that it outperforms its competitors. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

the evolution of the economy, competition, development of new technologies and globalization explain the blooming of inter-organizations cooperation. the inter-organizations cooperation represents a new opportunity to answer to complex challenges that a single organization can't face alone. Cloud computing is an emerging computation paradigm in information technology and networking. Most recently business applications are leveraging the power of this novel technology. In this work, we are interested in the issue of Inter-organizations Cooperation in Cloud computing environment. More precisely, this paper deals with Contextualized Flexible Cloud Workflow Services (CWS). By CWS, we mean services automating loosely coupled fragments of inter-organization business processes and whose description and execution are accessible through the Cloud. One possible way to deal with CWS modeling in a comprehensive conceptual framework is to use the Model-Driven Engineering. the basic principle of MDE is the separation of organizational concerns from their technical achievement. therefore, business models are not corrupted by technical concerns and vice versa. Following this practice, we first propose the Cloud Workflow Service Meta-Model (CWS2M) by extending BPMN 2.0 to support the modeling of CWS. In order to deal with variability, evolution and adaptation of CWS, we also propose the Flexible Cloud Workflow Service Meta-Model (FCWS2M) as an extension of the CWS2M meta-model using the versioning technique. Finally, we propose the Contextualized Flexible Cloud Workflow Service Meta-Model (CFCWS2M) to characterize the situations in which CWS versions are executed. We illustrate our solution through the "Drug Development Process" case study.

DDoS attack is one of the major concerns for network and cloud service providers, due to its substantial impact on revenue/cost and especially on their reputation. Also, network administrators are looking for solutions to manage voluminous data traffic. SDN is an emerging networking paradigm that provides a flexible network management. Hence, SDN is being widely adopted for wired, wireless, and mobile networks. Apart from a single point of failure (the controller), an attacker can target SDN at various levels by DDoS attacks. Existing solutions either focus on a particular attack type or require cumbersome alterations in SDN infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive, yet effective and lightweight approach to detect various fundamentally different DDoS attacks in SDN. Our approach relies on sequential analysis. We employ a non-parametric change point detection technique called Cumulative Sum (CuSum). Our framework also includes an adaptive threshold scheme that adapts with the changing traffic pattern. Additionally, our framework can be tuned to suffice critical security requirements such as high detection rate and low false alarm rate. We evaluated the effectiveness of our solution using CAIDA Internet traces as well as DARPA intrusion detection evaluation dataset. Our results confirm the effectiveness of our mechanism. In particular, average false alarm rate in our experiments was under 11.64%. On average, our method is able to detect DDoS attacks within 4.15 seconds.

In recent years, content-based publish/subscribe middleware has harnessed the power of Software-Defined networking (SDN) to leverage performance gains in terms of throughput rates, end-to-end latency, etc. To this end, content filters are directly installed on the Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) of switches. Such a middleware assumes unlimited TCAM space to deploy content filters. However, in reality, TCAM is a scarce resource and the number of flow table entries available for publish/subscribe traffic is severely limited. While such a limitation poses severe problems for the deployment of publish/subscribe middleware in practice, it is yet to be addressed in literature. So, in this paper, we design a filter aggregation algorithm that merges content filters on individual switches to respect TCAM constraints while ensuring minimal increase in unnecessary network traffic. Our algorithm uses the knowledge of advertisements, subscriptions, and a global view of the network state to perform bandwidth-efficient aggregation decisions on necessary switches. We provide different flavors of this algorithm with varying degrees of accuracy and complexity and thoroughly evaluate their performances under realistic workload. Our evaluation results show that our designed aggregation algorithm successfully meets TCAM constraints on switches while also reducing unnecessary traffic introduced in the network due to aggregation as compared to a baseline approach by up to 99.9%. © 2017 ACM.

Software systems in domains like Smart Cities, the Internet of things or autonomous cars are coined by a high degree of distribution across several independent computing devices and the requirement to be able to adjust themselves to varying situations in their operational environment. Self adaptive software systems are a natural choice to implement such context-dependent software systems. A multitude of approaches already implement self-adaptive systems and some consider even distribution aspects. Yet, none of the existing solutions supports the coordination of adaptation operations spanning multiple independent nodes, which is necessary to ensure a consistent adaptation even in presence of network errors or node failures. In this paper, we tackle this challenge to execute adaptations in distributed self-adaptive software systems in a coordinated manner. We present a protocol that enables the self-adaptive software system to execute correlated adaptations on multiple nodes in a transactional manlier ensuring an atomic and consistent transition of the distributed system from its source to the desired target configuration. the protocol is validated to be free of deadlocks for any given adaptation at any point in time using a model-checking approach. the performance of our approach is investigated in experiments that emulate the protocol's execution on real devices for different sizes of distributed applications and adaptation scenarios.

Latest hardware improvements on transceivers supporting Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) make it feasible to connect small battery powered devices hundred of meters or even km away. In this paper, we propose a physical computing paradigm fully exploiting this novel technology. Spatial physical computing (SPC) leverages not only natural manipulation typically used on TUI and construction kits but also integrates the necessary deambulation (around a building or a city) in the process of creating, testing and tuning a distributed smart sensor/actuator network. the overall system is a compound of (an unlimited) set of independent data-processing nodes supporting an event-driven data-flow programming scheme. We demonstrate in a few examples how such networks can be deployed - spatially programmed - through intuitive physical actions, and discuss the unique qualities and challenges of Spatial Physical computing.
