the Gaia mission (ESA) is collecting huge amounts of information about the objects that populate our Galaxy and beyond. Such data must be processed and analyzed before being released, and this work is carried out by the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC) through several work packages. One of these packages is Outlier Analysis, devoted to the study, by means of unsupervised clustering, of all the objects that cannot be fitted into any of the existent models. An algorithm based on optimized Self-Organized Maps (SOM) is proposed and implemented for taking advantage of distributed computing platforms, such as the MapReduce paradigm for Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark. Finally, the processing times of the sequential implementation of the algorithm is compared to the Hadoop and Spark based ones.

the WTFast's Gamers Private Network (GPN (R)) is a client/server solution that makes online games faster. GPN (R) connects online video-game players with a common game service across a wide-area network. Online games are interactive competitions by individual players who compete in a virtual environment. Response time, latency and its predictability are keys to GPN (R) success and runs against the vast complexity of internet-wide systems. We have built an experimental network of virtualized GPN (R) components so as to carefully measure the statistics of latency for distributed Minecraft games and to do so in a controlled laboratory environment. this has led to a better understanding of the coupling between parameters such as: the number of players, the subset of players that are idle or active, the volume of packets exchanged, the size of packets, latency to and from the game servers, and time-series for most of those parameters. In this paper we investigate specific game traffic connection types and show how we could collect very large-scale data sets of gaming metadata to control gaming network performance in real time. Such investigation and conducted experimentations will improve quality of service for GPN (R) systems and their reliability.

Synchronization of files has become a major use case in the context of cloud storage. Yet the usage of Internet bandwidth and cost for additional usage of the cloud usage has become the major bottlenecks of such services. Non-Internet synchronization is the process of performing file synchronization just by using moving devices (nomadic device) to communicate the content for synchronization, i.e. without using Internet as the communication medium. this enables the synchronization to be performed at a very low cost and Internet bandwidth, yet with reasonably the same user experience. Furthermore, the use of Internet for synchronization of large media are often limited with lower upload speeds, which makes the entire process slower. the work presents the use of devices such as computers, mobile phones and other network attached IoT devices that move between synchronization storages to transfer synchronization data and synchronize the storages. the distributed storages run Linux kernel to perform synchronization algorithms, which will be discussed in the paper. the results demonstrated competitive performance with existing synchronization mechanisms given the user doesn't need real-time synchronization but nomadic access prevails. Non-Internet Synchronization (NIS) does the needful for synchronization storages with minimum cost while utilizing redundant storage that moves between storage location frequently.

Twitter represents a massively distributed information source over a kaleidoscope of topics ranging from social and political events to entertainment and sports news. While recent work has suggested that variations on standard classifiers can be effectively trained as topical filters (Lin, Snow, and Morgan 2011;Yang et al. 2014;Magdy and Elsayed 2014), there remain many open questions about the efficacy of such classification-based filtering approaches. For example, over a year or more after training, how well do such classifiers generalize to future novel topical content, and are such results stable across a range of topics? Furthermore, what features and feature classes are most critical for longterm classifier performance? To answer these questions, we collected a corpus of over 800 million English Tweets via the Twitter streaming API during 2013 and 2014 and learned topic classifiers for 10 diverse themes ranging from social issues to celebrity deaths to the "Iran nuclear deal". the results of this long-term study of topic classifier performance provide a number of important insights, among them that (1) such classifiers can indeed generalize to novel topical content with high precision over a year or more after training and (2) simple terms and locations are the most informative feature classes (despite training on classes labeled via hashtags). © Copyright 2017, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). Online social media and games are increasingly replacing offline social activities. Social media is now an indispensable mode of communication;online gaming is not only a genuine social activity but also a popular spectator sport. Although online interaction shrinks social and geographical barriers, it is argued that social disparities, such as gender inequality, persists. For instance, online gaming communities have been criticized for objectifying women, which is a pressing question as gaming evolves into a social platform. However, few large-scale, systematic studies of gender inequality and objectification in social gaming platforms exist. Here we analyze more than one billion chat messages from Twitch, a social game-streaming platform, to study how the gender of streamers is associated with the nature of conversation. We find that female streamers receive significantly more objectifying comments while male streamers receive more gamerelated comments. this difference is more pronounced for popular streamers. We also show that the viewers' choice of channels is also strongly gendered. Our findings suggest that gendered conversation and objectification is prevalent, and most users produce strongly gendered messages. © Copyright 2017, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). In this position paper we describe select aspects of our experience with health-related self-Tracking, the data generated, and processes surrounding those. In particular we focus on how bilateral patient-clinician engagement may be fostered by the combination of technology and method. We exemplify with a case study where a PTSD-suffering veteran has been selftracking a specific symptom precursor. the availability of high-resolution self-Tracking data on the occurrences of even a single symptom created new opportunities in the therapeutic process for identifying underlying triggers of symptoms. the patient was highly engaged in self-Tracking and sharing the collected data. We suggest a key reason was the collaborative effort in defining the data collection protocol and discussion of the data. the therapist also engaged highly in the selftracking data, as it supported the existing therapeutic process in reaching insights otherwise unobtainable.

the Internet of things (IoT) is expanding and reaching the maturity level beyond initial deployments. An integrative and interoperable IoT platform proves to be a suitable execution environment for Smart City services because users simultaneously use multiple services, while an IoT platform enables cross-service data sharing. A large number of various IoT and mobile devices as well as the corresponding services can generate tremendous input load on an underlying IoT platform. thus, it is crucial to analyze the overall input rate on Smart City services to ensure predefined quality of service (e.g., low latency required by some IoT services). An aggregate input rate which characterizes a real world deployment can be used to check if a platform is able to adequately support multiple services running in parallel and to evaluate its overall performance. In this paper we review IoT-based Smart City services to identify key applications characterizing the domain, e.g., smart mobility, smart utilities, and citizen-driven mobile crowd sensing services. Next, we analyze the potential load which such applications pose on IoT services that continuously process the generated data streams. the analysis is used to create a model estimating an aggregate load generated by Smart City applications. We simulate a number of characteristic application compositions to provide insight about the aggregate input load and its potential impact on the performance of Smart City services. the proposed model is a first step towards predicting the processing load of Smart City services to facilitate the assessment and planning of required resources for continuous processing of sensor data in the context of Smart City services. © 2017 ACM.

Validation of mobile applications needs taking account of context (such network topology) and interactions between mobile nodes. Scenario-based approaches are well-suited to describe the behavior and interactions to observe in distributed systems. the difficulty to control accurately the execution context of such applications has led us to use passive testing. this paper presents a toolset which supports specification and verification of scenarios. A UML-based formal language, called TERMOS, has been implemented for specifying scenarios in mobile computing systems. these scenarios capture the key properties which are automatically checked on the traces, considering both the spatial configuration of nodes and their communication. We give an overview of the language design choices, its semantics and the implementation of the tool chain. the approach is demonstrated on a case study.
