this paper describes the use of domain decomposition methods for accelerating wave physics simulation. Numerical wave-based methods provide more accurate simulation than geometrical methods, but at a higher computation cost as well. In the context of virtual reality, the quality of the results is estimated according to human perception, what makes geometrical methods an interesting approach for achieving real-time physically-based rendering. Here, we investigate a geometrical method based on both beams and rays tracing, which we enhance by two levels of parallel processing. Techniques from domain decomposition methods are coupled with classical parallel computing on both shared and distributed memory. Both optic and acoustic renderings are experimented to evaluate the acceleration impact of the domain decomposition scheme. Speedup measurements clearly show the efficiency of using domain decomposition methods for real-time simulation of wave physics. Copyright (C) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) standard can be used for representing low-level simulation and automation workflows for scientific, engineering and manufacturing processes. this paper focuses on removing the main obstacles that limit a more widespread adoption of the standard and the related technology: collaboration and data management. Web technologies can provide the necessary complementary features to the BPMN editing and execution activities: real-time collaboration, accessibility, information and expertise sharing. the proposed prototype mimics a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) platform offering public community support and a private working area which can be shared in real-time with other users. the prototype includes an execution engine the implementation of which has been tailored to support the data structures required by scientific and engineering applications. the ideas presented in this paper are supported by three use cases: a Multi Disciplinary Optimization case (which is a typical engineering-domain problem involving the design of complex items), a collaborative decision-making scenario (the negotiation process for generating a lecture timetable at a university) and Lego-like decomposition of an optimization algorithm (its constituent elements can be easily re-assembled and shared with our platform).

the paper presents modeling of performance and power consumption when running parallel applications on modern cluster-based systems. the model includes basic so-called blocks representing either computations or communication. the latter includes both point-to-point and collective communication. real measurements were performed using MPI applications and routines run on three different clusters with both Infiniband and Gigabit Ethernet interconnects. Regression allowed to obtain specific coefficients for particular systems, all modeled withthe same formulas. the model has been incorporated into the MERPSYS environment for modeling parallel applications and simulation of execution on large-scale cluster and volunteer based systems. Using specific application and system models, MERPSYS allows to predict application execution time, reliability and power consumption of resources used during computations. Consequently, the proposed models for computational and communication blocks are of utmost importance for the environment.

the increasing amount of new assistance features in today's vehicles to ensure safe and reliable operations, imply increasingly complex systems. Since millions of test kilometers have to be driven to ensure a reliable system, simulation-based verification is becoming more important to reduce costs and time-to-market. Furthermore requirements, design and verification have to follow the stringent specifications from standards such as ISO26262 for functional safety. To overcome the complexity issues of safety-critical systems, a model-based approach helps to unites all stakeholder, and helps non safety specialists to understand problems in the design. In this paper, we present a novel methodology to automatically generate testbenches for simulation based verification from a first safety analysis. through early simulation with constraint random stimuli and parameters we are able to derive further requirements for real-timeapplications. Furthermore, these testbenches can be used through the whole safety-lifecycle. Our approach allows a tight and seamless integration of requirements, design and verification into the safety-lifecycle of ISO26262.

the growing concern about IAQ has accelerated the development of small, low cost Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring systems. these are capable of monitoring various indoor air pollutants in real-time. However, since most IAQ monitoring systems present the sensed value of the corresponding pollutant as a number, when we read the sensor values it is difficult for not experts but normal users to identify how polluted the air is or what is the pollution criteria of each pollutant. therefore, for ambient air quality, a comprehensive Air Quality Index (AQI) is already being used in a number of nations to present the polluted level of the air, and thereby people can identify the current status of air quality easily. Nevertheless, since the index calculation is based on ambient air pollutants, and the index presents a section mean of sensed values collected for 1 or 24 h, the AQI used for presenting ambient air quality is not suitable for IAQ representation. therefore, in this paper, we perform an experiment that applies the AQI directly to IAQ monitoring system that we developed, and derive some problems through the result analysis.

Billions of devices are now integral part of the day-to-day routine of people but they are sometime incompatible with one another because they employ divergent protocols. the introduction of semantics has been a key enabler towards proper and universal descriptions of connected objects as well as the relationship between them, removing relational ambiguities and improving context-awareness. Virtual objects (VOs) are semantic descriptions of the aggregated native capabilities of physical devices. And as such, they can be readily upgraded over time in order to dynamically suit the processes they are involved with because the context information that is present within them is not necessarily static in time. the original VOs often need to be semantically enriched with more contextual details as they interact withapplications and other reasoning engines, where they often evolve into composite virtual objects (cVOs) or rich virtual objects (rVOs) that are more intelligent and interoperable. the complexity of handling large volumes of streaming data increases in the presence of uncertainty caused by incomplete, altered, noisy and/or unstructured information. Context brokering has been a growing trend over the past few years where brokers have been used to discover context and to facilitate processes between service requesting and service providing entities. Several context brokers have been proposed but they do not offer a scalable and optimised brokering algorithm. this necessitates the development of novel ontologies where more functional and non-functional descriptions are used to reduce uncertainties and enrich the content of VOs withthe objective of creating a truly automated networking environment.
