this study presents the idea of building a robust controller for a codec in charge of a two-way audio stream bringing together the contributions of the areas of Voice over IP (VoIP) and adaptive systems. Such a controller will be possible with the application of a solution based on the Quality of Experience (QoE) for the control problem real-time speech quality of VoIP calls for the future applications and services. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance systems) algorithms increasingly use heavy image processing operations. To embed this type of algorithms, semiconductor companies offer many heterogeneous architectures. these SoCs (System on Chip) are composed of different processing units, with different capabilities, and often with massively parallel computing unit. Due to the complexity of these SoCs, predicting if a given algorithm can be executed in real time on a given architecture is not trivial. In fact it is not a simple task for automotive industry actors to choose the most suited heterogeneous SoC for a given application. Moreover, embedding complex algorithms on these systems remains a difficult task due to heterogeneity, it is not easy to decide how to allocate parts of a given algorithm on the different computing units of a given SoC. In order to help automotive industry in embedding algorithms on heterogeneous architectures, we propose a novel approach to predict performances of image processing algorithms applicable on different types of computing units. Our methodology is able to predict a more or less wide interval of execution time with a degree of confidence using only high level description of algorithms, and a few characteristics of computing units.

We develop and describe some algorithms dedicated to people characteristic movement type detection using ultra wide band radar. Derived methods are implemented in real time system where breath detection and its basic parameters e.g. frequency and depth are estimated. We present also some crucial details of software implementation where we deal with radar signal acquisition and processing in real time. Presented method has many interesting applications in healthcare: noninvasive respiration or heartbeat monitoring and even though the wall measurement. Unlike camera radar respects anonymity. All development was made as Radcare project.

In this demo we will present a suite of smartphone applications that support location-aware, personalized multimedia services to a very large crowd with the help of a cyber computing infrastructure. As a proof of concept, we target Hajj where more than 5 million pilgrims perform spatio-temporal activities. the cyber-physical system creates an ad-hoc social network among pilgrims, their family members, Hajj authorities, vehicles that provide services to the pilgrims, medical doctors and hospitals, and the city admins. the crowdsourced multimedia data from the suite of smartphone applications are captured by the cyber environment, processed to extract context information, sent to a cloud environment for real-time query processing, and finally shared with a very large crowd. the framework has been deployed since 2014.

this paper considers real-time cluster-based wireless sensor networks where the nodes harvest energy from the environment. We target performance sensitive applications that have to collectively send their information to cluster head by a predefined deadline, such as in distributed real-time monitoring and detection. the nodes are equipped with Dynamic Modulation Scaling (DMS) capable wireless radios. the problem is to determine the time slots and modulation levels that will be used by each node while communicating with the cluster-head in order to achieve energy-neutral (perpetual) operation and maximize energy reserves. We propose a solution that adjusts underlying TDMA slots to enable high-energy nodes to transmit faster and thus produce larger slack for low-energy nodes, while meeting the performance constraint. We present an optimal mixed integer programming based solution. We also develop fast heuristics that are shown to provide approximate solutions through comprehensive experiments with actual solar energy harvesting profiles.

Parallel computing on heterogeneous multiprocessor architecture is a new technique used to tackle the complexity of actual media applications. Such technique is used on an embedded architecture composed of 2ARMs coupled to a GPu. In this paper, an approach for real time Viola and Jones face detection algorithm using CPU-GPU based platform is presented. First, the application is implemented and parallelized on two identical ARM CortexA9 CPUs using tasks and data levels parallelism. this technique does not achieve the timing objectives. To ensure greater performance while reducing energy ratio, we extend our parallelization technique to support a GPU as an accelerator to perform non graphical tasks. OpenCL, the heterogeneous parallel programming model, is used to ensure communication between CPU and GPU.

River water quality nowadays represents a major concern. Performing water monitoring, in order to detect the pollutant with wireless sensor networks is not enough. Furthermore, the solution to place more sensors for monitoring is not cost efficient as this type of sensors are very expensive. In the case of a pollution accident on a river, it is mandatory to alert people and, more important, to predict the evolution of pollutant concentration, downstream. Also, it is essential to minimize the time-frame to send the alert to the possibly affected people. In this paper, we propose a cost-efficient cloud-based service oriented architecture for water pollution prediction and alert system. the cost efficiency of our approach comes from the three main directions. the first way is represented by the usage of less water monitoring specific sensors due to the usage of complex hydraulic models. the second direction is represented by the construction of a knowledge-base with pre-run scenarios of pollution propagation events. the third direction is represented by the usage of cloud computing services which are proven to be cost effective. the novelty of our approach comes from the integration of different Cloud computing platforms and services, in order achieve scalability, provisioning of resources in real time, to have a simplified deployment and management of resources and applications, and to get a better cost/ performance ratio.

Vehicles in Vehicular Ad-Hoc NETworks (VANETs) use applications which require an exchange of application-specific confidential data between vehicles. this data must be protected from vehicles not using the application. To achieve this, the vehicles have to authenticate each other in a way that the other communication partner is convinced that the vehicle is eligible to exchange the data. Furthermore, both partners have to agree on an encryption key. this kind of protocols is known as approaches to authenticated key agreement. the proprietary protocol implemented and evaluated in this paper supports these properties and, in addition, preserves the privacy of the vehicles. After executing the protocol, neither one of the participating vehicles nor an eavesdropping third vehicle in communication range can unveil the identity of the vehicles. this important property is achieved by combining the Elliptic Curve Integrated Encryption Scheme (ECIES) with ring signatures. Furthermore, we demonstrate how this protocol can be applied within a GeoNetworking message. We present a prototype of the protocol and discuss evaluation results produced from a test setup with real vehicles. the results show that a feasible ring size can be established to reliably protect the privacy of the vehicles. We also analyse the execution time of the complete protocol, of the constituent protocol steps as well as of the different components like security and transmission. the presented results clearly show that the protocol can be completed on time, even when the communicating vehicles have a high relative velocity and poor communication range.

Demands on computing performance are steadily increasing, also in the domain of embedded hard real-time applications. Accordingly, multicore processors have already entered the hard real-time domain, mainly for execution of multiple applications. Further performance improvements can be gained by executing multithreaded applications on multicores. Since such applications share data between multiple cores, coherent accesses to that data must be guaranteed. To be applied in hard real-time domains, the complete system, including the cache hierarchy, needs to provide a predictable timing behaviour that allows a static estimate of the worst case execution time. this paper presents an analysis of the well-known MESI (Modified, Exclusive, Shared, Invalid) technique and its drawbacks concerning time predictability. Moreover, we show ways how to implement a MESI technique suitable for hard real-time systems.

embedded computing systems are very vulnerable to anomalies that can occur during execution of deployed software. Anomalies can be due for example to faults, bugs or deadlocks during executions. these anomalies can have very dangerous consequences on the systems controlled by embedded computing devices. embedded systems are designed to perform autonomously, i.e. without any human intervention, and thus the possibility to debug an application to manage the anomaly is very difficult if not impossible. Anomaly detection algorithms are the primary means of being aware of anomalous conditions. In this paper we describe a novel approach to detect an anomaly during execution of one or more applications. the algorithm exploits the differences between the behavior of memory sequences generated during executions. Memory reference sequences are monitored in real time using the PIN tracing tool. the memory reference sequence is divided into randomly selected blocks and spectrally described with the Discrete Cosine Transform.
