Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) many-core processors offer the performance needed for computational-intensive safety-critical real-timeapplications such as autonomous driving. However, these consumer-grade many-core processors are increasingly susceptible to faults because of their highly integrated design. In this paper, we present a fault-tolerance framework that eases the usage of COTS many-core processors for safety-critical applications. Our framework employs an adaptable software-based fault-tolerance mechanism that combines N Modular Redundancy (NMR) with a repair process and a rejuvenating round robin voting scheme. A Stochastic Activity Network (SAN) model of the fault-tolerance mechanism allows the framework to adapt the parameters of the mechanism such that a specified target availability is achieved with minimum overhead. Experiments on a cycle-accurate simulator empirically prove the correctness of the SAN model and evaluate the overhead of the framework.

the resonant frequency and quality factor are two very useful characteristics of a micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) device. However, these two factors in realtimeapplications can be hard to determine due to the imperfections of fabrication processes and aging effects. this study proposes a technique that can compute the transmissibility in realtime using a low cost microcontroller. It utilizes two laser vibrometers to detect input and output motion. After sampling and pre-filtering, a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is performed to convert the time-domain signals into frequency domain signals. the amplitude of the output signal at each frequency is divided by the amplitude of the corresponding input signal at each frequency to obtain the transmissibility. To overcome the difficulties resulting from measurement and quantization noise, a recursive calculating algorithm and a de-quantization filter are used. A cantilevered structure was chosen as the test structure, for verification, and mounted to an electromechanical shaker to evaluate this technique. the tests demonstrated that this technique can measure the transmissibility, and therefore the resonant frequency and mechanical quality factor can be accurately compared to a professional signal analyzer.

this paper addresses the problem of parallelizing existing single-rate Simulink models for embedded control applications on multi-core architectures considering communication cost between blocks on different CPU cores. Utilizing the block diagram of the Simulink model, we derive the dependency graph between the different blocks. In order to solve the scheduling problem, we describe a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation for optimally mapping the Simulink blocks to different CPU cores. Since the number of variables and constraints for MILP solver grows exponentially when model size increases, solving this problem in a reasonable time becomes harder. For addressing this issue, we introduce a set of techniques for reducing the number of constraints in the MILP formulation. By using the proposed techniques, the MILP solver finds solutions that are closer to the optimal solution within a given time bound. We study the scalability and efficiency of our consisting approach with synthetic benchmarks of randomly generated directed acyclic graphs. We also use the Fault-Tolerant Fuel Control System demo from Simulink and a Diesel engine controller from Toyota as case studies for demonstrating applicability of our approach to real world problems.

Gaze movements play a crucial role in human-computer interaction (HCI) applications. Recently, gaze tracking systems with a wide variety of applications have attracted much interest by the industry as well as the scientific community. the state-of-the-art gaze trackers are mostly non-intrusive and report high estimation accuracies. However, they require complex setups such as camera and geometric calibration in addition to subject-specific calibration. In this paper, we introduce a multi-camera gaze estimation system which requires less effort for the users in terms of the system setup and calibration. the system is based on an adaptive fusion of multiple independent camera systems in which the gaze estimation relies on simple cross-ratio (CR) geometry. Experimental results conducted on real data show that the proposed system achieves a significant accuracy improvement, by around 25%, over the traditional CR-based single camera systemsthrough the novel adaptive multi-camera fusion scheme. the real-time system achieves <0.9 degrees accuracy error with very few calibration data (5 points) under natural head movements, which is competitive with more complex systems. Hence, the proposed system enables fast and user-friendly gaze tracking with minimum user effort without sacrificing too much accuracy.

In recent years, a substantial work has been devoted to the design of cryptographic protocols with reduced computational load and power consumption. However, implementations are scarce, especially in case of embedded devices. In this paper, we discuss the implementation over elliptic curves of a two-party key agreement protocol for the Raspberry PI platform. the protocol requires just one round to derive an (implicit) authenticated session key, and it makes use of identity-based cryptography, which fits very well some application scenarios, allowing for more efficiency than the certificate-based approach. Our implementation takes advantage of the portability and security features of the Java programming language and, due to a modular design, it can be easily extended to encompass other identity-based schemes and protocols. We run a set of tests in order to verify the correctness of our implementation and to measure its performances in term of computingtime. Our results demonstrate that getting secure communications using low cost, resource constrained devices is viable to the point that it can be used for real world applications.

Separating the dynamic power and leakage power components from total microprocessor power can enable new optimizations for cloud computing. To this end, we introduce FirmLeak, a new framework that enables accurate, real-time estimation of microprocessor leakage power by system software. FirmLeak accounts for power-gating regions, per-core voltage domains, and manufacturing variation. We present an experimental evaluation of FirmLeak on a POWER7+ microprocessor for a range of hardware parts, voltages and temperatures. We discuss how this can be used in two applications to manage power by 1) improving billing of energy for cloud computing and 2) optimizing fan power consumption.

this paper presents an embedded system for fall detection using accelerometric data and depth maps. A real-time processing of motion data and depth maps is realized on a low-cost PandaBoard platform. In order to achieve detection of human falls with low computational cost the system performs a depth-based inferring about the fall event when person's movement is above some preset threshold. the performance of the system has been evaluated on our publicly available dataset consisting of synchronized depth maps and motion data. To investigate the detection accuracy in depth maps from different camera views the image sequences were simultaneously recorded by two Kinect sensors, where one of them was placed in the front of the scene, whereas the second one was located on the ceiling. the motion data were acquired by a body-worn accelerometer and transmitted wirelessly to the processing unit, responsible for both synchronization and recording or processing of the data.
