Design patterns are acknowledged as powerful conceptual tools to improve design quality and to reduce the time and cost of design by effect of the reuse of "good" solutions. In many fields such as software engineering, web engineering, and interface design, patterns are widely used by practitioners and are also investigated from a research perspective. Still, the concept of design pattern has received marginal attention in the arena of user interfaces (UIs) for Recommender systems (RSs). To our knowledge, a little is known about the use of patterns in this specific class of applications, in spite of their increasing popularity, and no RS specific interface pattern is available in existing pattern languages. We have performed a systematic analysis of 28 real-world RSs in a variety of sectors, in order to: (i) discover occurrences of existing general (i.e., domain independent) UI patterns;(ii) identify recurrent UI design solutions for RS specific features;(iii) elicit a set of new UI patterns for RS interfaces. the analysis of patterns occurrences highlights the degree at which "good" UI design solutions are adopted in RSs for the different sectors. the new patterns can be used by UI designers of RSs to improve the UX of their systems. © 2015 ACM.

In data-intensive real-time applications, e.g., transportation management and location-based services, the amount of sensor data is exploding. In these applications, it is desirable to extract value-added information, e.g., fast driving routes, from sensor data streams in real-time rather than overloading users with massive raw data. However, achieving the objective is challenging due to the data volume and complex data analysis tasks with stringent timing constraints. Most existing big data management systems, e.g., Hadoop, are not directly applicable to real-time sensor data analytics, since they are timing agnostic and focus on batch processing of previously stored data that are potentially outdated and subject to I/O overheads. To address the problem, we design a new real-time big data management framework, which supports a non-preemptive periodic task model for continuous in-memory sensor data analysis and a schedulability test based on the EDF (Earliest Deadline First) algorithm to derive information from current sensor data in real-time by extending the map-reduce model originated in functional programming. As a proof-of-concept case study, a prototype system is implemented. In the performance evaluation, it is empirically shown that all deadlines can be met for the tested sensor data analysis benchmarks.

With the development of avionics technology, the runway detection technique becomes increasingly important both in military and civil applications. But the existing runway detection methods are mostly intended for satellite images or downward-looking aerial photos and the algorithm complexity is relatively high, which makes it hard to apply them to airborne real-time applications. In this paper, a real-time sensor guided runway detection method is presented. First of all, with the help of sensor data and terrain data from EVS and SVS, a runway template is generated and a search region is therefore determined. then within the search region, a lines extraction on query image is performed. And finally the matching process is applied to the query image and template to detect the runway area. Experimental results on simulation system and real aerial images show that the proposed approach has a high precision and an 87.7% less time cost than an existing state-of-art matching method.

the expected huge increase in the number of IoT data sources (sensors, embedded systems, personal devices etc.) will give rise to network-edge computing, i.e., data pre-processing, local storage, and filtering close to the data sources. Specifically, data reduction at the network edge (e.g., on an IoT gateway device or a mini-server deployed locally at an IoT area network) can prevent I/O bottlenecks, as well as dramatically reduce storage, bandwidth, and energy costs. However, current solutions face two main obstacles towards achieving this benefits of network-edge computing. Firstly, the most efficient algorithms for data reduction of time series (which is one of the prevailing kinds of data in IoT) are developed to work a posteriori upon big datasets and they cannot take decisions per incoming data item. Secondly, the state of the art lacks systems that can apply any of many different possible data reduction methods without adding significant delays or heavyweight re-configurations. this paper presents a solution that automates the switching between different data handling algorithms at the network edge, including an analysis of adjusted data reduction methods, as well as three flavors of a new algorithm that is capable of performing real-time reduction of incoming time series items based on the concept of Perceptually Important Points. the potential benefits are evaluated upon real datasets from street, household, and robot sensors, showing that our solution achieves accuracies between 76,1 % and 93,8 % despite forwarding only 1/3 of the data items, without adding significant forwarding delays.

Cloud computing is an evolving paradigm which is becoming an adoptable technology for a variety of applications. However, cloud infrastructures must be able to fulfill application requirements before adopting cloud solutions. Cloud infrastructure providers communicate the characteristics of their services to their customers through Service Level Agreements (SLA). In order for a real-time application to be able to use cloud technology, cloud infrastructure providers have to be able to provide timing guarantees in the SLAs. In this paper, we present our ongoing work regarding a cloud solution in which periodic tasks are provided as a service in the Software as a Service (SaS) model. Tasks belonging to a certain application are mapped in a Virtual Machine (VM). We also study the problem of VM placement on a cloud infrastructure. We propose a placement mechanism which minimizes the energy consumption of the data center by consolidating VMs in a minimum number of servers while respecting the timing requirement of virtual machines.

In the emerging Internet-of-things (IoT), wireless sensors are the vital mediators between the physical world and the cyber space. In many telemonitoring and interactive applications, high-rate data streams up to MB/s may need to be transported from the wireless sensors to the cloud computing servers over the Internet and processed by the remote servers in quasi-real time fashion. these applications generally demand substantial reduction of communication bandwidth, response latency and power consumption of these Internet-based cyber-physical systems. To tackle these demands for efficient use of communication, computing and power resources, we developed an advanced wearable sensor platform (AWSP) which integrated a powerful system-on-chip (SoC) processor, a smart power management unit, a highly accurate real-time clock and multi-function peripherals into a miniature module. this AWSP designed to function is capable of performing sophisticated data pre-processing including real-time artifact and noise removal, data compression, and even feature extraction before uploading the data to other devices like mobile phone, computer, etc. Furthermore, with the installation of embedded real-time Linux operating system, this sensor provides a familiar and powerful software development environment for system developers to build their computation-intensive real-time applications. this paper presents the design and development process.

Safety-critical systems and in particular mixed-criticality systems require spatial and temporal separation for their hosted applications and functionalities. Additional constraints are using Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) components, portability and determinism. these items are required for economic success for products with low piece numbers and long life-cycles like aircraft. Available embedded processors lack means for spatial separation of Input/Output (I/O) components like an Input/Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU). the objective of this paper is to provide spatial separation for I/O in COTS mixed-criticality embedded real-time systems like avionics with minimum possible impact on performance (transfer time, transfer rate, Central Processing Unit (CPU) usage). the three main contributions of this paper are: (1) the presented Input/Output Memory Protection Unit (IOMPU) enables to upgrade spatial separation for I/O to a system by using COTS components and Non-Transparent Bridge (NTB) technology. In addition, the IOMPU concept is compatible with existing temporal separation solutions. (2) the paper shows a prototype implementation and a potential use case in context of hardware-based I/O virtualization. (3) the evaluation in this paper demonstrates that the IOMPU concept is practically applicable. the performance overhead (transfer time, transfer rate) is below 0.88%, which is almost negligible, particularly compared to state-of-the-art software-based solutions.

this paper presents an embedded system for fall detection using accelerometric data and depth maps. A real-time processing of motion data and depth maps is realized on a low-cost PandaBoard platform. In order to achieve detection of human falls with low computational cost the system performs a depth-based inferring about the fall event when person's movement is above some preset threshold. the performance of the system has been evaluated on our publicly available dataset consisting of synchronized depth maps and motion data. To investigate the detection accuracy in depth maps from different camera views the image sequences were simultaneously recorded by two Kinect sensors, where one of them was placed in the front of the scene, whereas the second one was located on the ceiling. the motion data were acquired by a body-worn accelerometer and transmitted wirelessly to the processing unit, responsible for both synchronization and recording or processing of the data.

In real-time embedded systems, scheduling policy is considered one of the main factors that affect their performance. It helps to choose which task should be selected first from ready queue to run. Round Robin (RR) scheduling algorithm is widely used and its performance highly depends on a Quantum size Qt, which is a predefined amount of time assigned by CPU to every task to be executed. However, the performance degrades with respect to an average waiting time (AWT), an average Turn-Around time (ATT) and a number of Context Switches (NCS). this paper presents a new improved dynamic Round Robin scheduling algorithm to reduce the average waiting time, turn-around time and the number of context switches in order to improve the system overall performance. It also presents a comparative analysis between several existing Round Robin algorithms based on the average time for waiting and turn-around and number of context switches.

this paper considers real-time cluster-based wireless sensor networks where the nodes harvest energy from the environment. We target performance sensitive applications that have to collectively send their information to cluster head by a predefined deadline, such as in distributed real-time monitoring and detection. the nodes are equipped with Dynamic Modulation Scaling (DMS) capable wireless radios. the problem is to determine the time slots and modulation levels that will be used by each node while communicating with the cluster-head in order to achieve energy-neutral (perpetual) operation and maximize energy reserves. We propose a solution that adjusts underlying TDMA slots that enables high energy nodes to compensate by transmitting faster producing larger slack for dark nodes, while meeting the performance constraint. We present an optimal mixed integer linear programming based solution. We also develop fast heuristics that are shown to provide approximate solutions through comprehensive experiments with actual solar energy harvesting profiles.
