there is risk when doing experiments on real world systems and making real world measurements. In a theoretical system, a simulation, or a test bed, we can make assumptions about real world behaviors and gloss over potential problems. In a real world system, however, we have to solve those problems to get science done. Sometimes these are technical problems, like making sure a tool chain is consistent across many hosts. Sometimes these are policy problems, such as obtaining permission and access. the other users of a system have a reasonable expectation that their work will not be disrupted, so researchers studying those systems must be careful accommodate that expectation. Sometimes, systems researchers encounter these problems and a study must be changed or canceled, though the problem may have nothing to do with the study itself. Our goal was to make a high-quality all-to-all network latency map that captures features not present in existing latency data sets. We solved most of the technical problems needed to make the required measurements. We solved most policy problems too, often with complex technical solutions to get around a policy obstacle without creating disruptions. However, we eventually ran out of technical solutions: we ran afoul of a policy obstacle to a technical solution to a technical problem. there is no one to blame, and no one has done anything obviously wrong: the policy decision was a conservative one designed to protect the data of the regular users of the system. Although our resulting latency data set is not complete, we believe it still has value for various network applications. Our goal was to make a high-quality all-to-all network latency map that captures features not present in existing latency data sets. We solved most of the technical problems needed to make the required measurements. Maximizing the benefit gained by soft real-time jobs in many applications and embedded systems is highly needed to provide an acceptable QoS (Quality of Service). this paper considers a benefit model for on-line preemptive multiprocessor scheduling. the goal is to maximize the total benefit gained by the jobs that meet their deadlines. this method prioritizes the jobs using their benefit density functions and schedules them in a real-time basis. We propose an online choice of two approximation algorithms in order to partition the jobs among identical processors at the time of their arrival without using any statistics. Our analysis and experiments show that we are able to maximize the gained benefit and decrease the computational complexity (compared to existing algorithms) while minimizing make span (response time, also referred to as cost), with fewer missed deadlines and more balanced usage of processors. Our solution is applicable to a wide variety of soft real-time applications and embedded systems such as, but not limited to multimedia applications, medical monitoring systems or those with higher utilization such as bursty hosting servers.

In the dark silicon era, a fundamental problem is: given a real-time computation demand represented by a set of independent applications with their own power consumption, how to determine if an on-chip multiprocessor system is able to respond to this demand and maintain its reliability by keeping every core within the safe temperature range. In this paper, we first present a novel thermal model for the prediction of chip peak temperature assuming the application-to-core mapping is determined. the mathematical model combines linearized steady-state thermal model with empirical scaling factors to achieve significantly improved accuracy and running efficiency. Based on it, a MILP-based approach is presented to find the optimal application-to-core assignment such that the computation demand is met and the chip temperature is minimized. At last, if the minimized temperature still exceeds the safe temperature threshold, a novel heuristic algorithm, called temperature threshold-aware result handling (TTRH), is proposed to drop certain applications selectively from immediate execution, and lower the chip peak temperature to the safety threshold. Extensive performance evaluation shows that the MILP-based approach can reduce the chip peak temperature by 9.1 o C on average compared to traditional techniques. TTRH algorithm can further lower the chip peak temperature by 1.38° C on average with the application dropping rate of less than 4.35%.

Large on-chip caches with uniform access time are inefficient to be used in multicore processors due to the increasing wire delays across the chip. the Non-Uniform Cache Architecture (NUCA) is proved to be effective to solve the problem of the increasing wire delays in multicore processors. For real-time systems that use multicore processors, it is crucial to bound the worst-case execution time (WCET) accurately and safely. In this paper, we develop a WCET analysis approach to consider the effects of static NUCA caches on WCET.

the adaptation of an operating system to an application is often needed to optimize the embedded code. Adaptation consists in removing the unneeded operating systems services and the dead code according to applications requirements. the resulting stripped operating system is smaller, safer and has better performance. this adaptation is usually done by hand for each application. As a result some dead code may remain unnoticed. the verification and the certification of the adapted operating system is difficult too: for each adaptation to an application, the certification must be redone and for the verification, a new model has to be designed with the well known gap problem between the model and the actual software. In this paper, we present a new approach based on formal methods to synthesize an Application-Specific real-time Operating System. Instead of removing services from the source code of an existing operating system, a formal model is used. All the functions of the operating system with the full control flow and control variables are modeled. According to an application model, unneeded services and part of control flow are removed from the model by using a reachability analysis. this guarantees no dead code remains. Moreover some properties may be checked on the pruned model to ensure the application behaves as expected. At last, the corresponding source code is generated from the model.

Recently, several Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) networks, such as Tokyo QKD, SECOQC, have been built to evaluate the quantum based OTP(One time Pad) secure communication. As an ideal unconditional secure technique, OTP requires the key rate the same as the information rate. However, comparing with high speed information traffic (Gbps), the key generation rate of QKD is very poor(Kbps). therefore, in practical QKD networks, it is difficult to support numerous applications and multiple users simultaneously. To address this issue, we argue that it is more practical to provide quality of security instead of OTP in quantum networks. We further propose ASM, an Adaptive Security Selection Mechanism for quantum networks based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). In ASM, services can select an appropriate encryption algorithm that satisfies the proper security level and performance metrics under the limit of the key generation rate. We also implement ASM under our RT-QKD platform, and evaluate its performance. Experimental results demonstrate that ASM can select the optimal algorithm to meet the requirement of security and performance under an acceptable cost.

With the advent of high-performance embedded computing (HPEC) systems, many digital processing algorithms are now implemented by special-purpose massively parallel processors. In this paper, a low-power ARM/GPU co-design architecture is addressed using OpenCL-based parallel programming for implementing complex reconstructive signal processing operations. Such operations are accelerated using data-parallel functions on the GPU and ARM processor, in a HW/SW co-design scheme via OpenCL API calls. Experimental results shows the achieved computational performance and the effectiveness of the OpenCL standard comparing the framework against traditional parallel embedded versions.

With the extensive use of portable battery powered devices in the new computing era, the power consumption problem of embedded devices has received a lot of attention in order to gain long battery life for enormous prospective. In modern processors, dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) has been commonly used for energy reduction and temperature control. But with the variety of processor configurations, a DVFS arrangement that is energy efficient for one processor might not be appropriate for others. Furthermore, the efficiency of DVFS is also affected by the CPU intensiveness of the underlying tasks of the applications. In this paper, we propose a novel reinforcement learning based algorithm that dynamically controls the voltage and frequency of real-time systems and adjusts itself with diverse environments for optimal use of energy. Experimental results show that our proposed method can save significant amount of energy compared to other approaches.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) security is the field of study that aims at solutions that provide multiple points of protection against physical and electronic theft from ATMs and protecting their installations. From anti-skimming defend systems to silent indicate systems, integrated ATM video surveillance cameras and ATM monitoring options, security specialists are ready to help the people get more out of the ATM security and ATM loss prevention systems. the implementation is achieved with the use of Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications technology. M2M communications is a topic that has recently attracted much attention It provides real-time monitoring and control without the need for human intervention. the idea of M2M platform suggests new system architecture for positioning and monitoring applications with wider coverage and higher communication efficiency. the aim of the proposed work is to implement a low cost stand-alone embedded Web Server (EWS) based on ARM11 processor and Linux operating system using Raspberry Pi. It offers a robust networking solution with wide range of application areas over internet. the Web server can be run on an embedded system having limited resources to serve embedded web page to a web browser. the setup is proposed for ATM security, comprising of the modules namely, authentication of shutter lock, web enabled control, sensors and camera control.
