this paper describes an architecture for real-time environmental modeling. It consists of a wireless mesh network equipped with sensors and a cloud-based infrastructure to perform real-time environmental simulations using a physics-based model combined with an Ensemble Kalman Filter. the purpose of the system is to optimize groundwater abstraction close to a river. these initial studies demonstrate that the cloud infrastructure can simultaneously compute a large number of simulations, thus allowing for the implementation of Ensemble Kalman Filters in real-time.

Multiprocessor system on chip (SoC) contains hundreds of cores on a chip that require high speed interconnections for fast data communication between the cores. With an increased number of cores, an on-chip bus or a multi-layer bus architecture is the bottleneck for SoC. In contrast, Network-on-chip (NoC) mitigates the flaws of the SoC technology by introducing high scalability, improved communication performance and lesser power consumption. It provides such an on-chip communication architecture that allows multiple cores to communicate via packets routed on a network. A Network-on-System (NoS) architectural framework caters for the major issues of high latency and decreased throughput of reprogrammable and reconfigurable hybrid embedded systems. this paper presents a novel idea of hybrid processors configuration in NoS using an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) generated middleware. the user will be able to configure or reconfigure the NoS, whereas the intercommunication of hybrid processors on the NoS will take place in an abstraction layer without any user intervention. the basic model of NoS and the proposed prototype for GUI based IDE used for middleware generation have been explained in detail. the paper also discusses how such an IDE can be used in the middleware generation of real-time applications like SDR. the proposed methodology is ideally suited to address the complexities of a hybrid embedded system.

Many users with motor disabilities, such as quadriplegics are unable to handle a power wheelchair securely, without causing harm to others, to themselves or their surroundings. Smart wheelchairs usually have been instrumented with a collection of sensors and computers using systems and algorithms that have been designed to provide safe navigation assistance through collision avoidance. this paper proposes a real-time obstacle avoidance embedded system adapted to work with a multimodal navigation interface. 26 Ultrasonic sensors (Sonars) were used to provide feedback of the distance between the wheelchair and the obstacles.

In this paper we introduce exact and non-exact real-time waits in reactive Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous (GALS) programming languages and synchronous languages as their subset. the language constructs that allow use of real-time waits are illustrated on the SystemJ GALS language. they allow system designers to explicitly use, at the specification level, not only logical time but also the real-time in order to control program execution. the introduced concepts utilize execution platforms that allow finding best and worst reaction time of a GALS or synchronous program.

As real-time embedded systems become more complex, there is the need to build them using high performance commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components. However, tasks can exhibit hard to predict worst case execution times (WCET) when executing on commodity hardware, due to contention among shared physical resources. Past work has introduced the PRedictable Execution Model (PREM) [1] to solve this issue, but unfortunately, the time required to manually refactor existing code according to this model is too high. Light-PREM proposes a novel technique that automates the refactoring process needed to convert legacy software applications to PREM-compliant code. the advantage of Light-PREM is twofold. On one side, it makes the adoption of PREM more attractive from an industrial point of view, because it significantly reduces the amount of work that is needed to generate PREM-compliant code. On the other hand, the proposed methodology is general enough to be used with any embedded software design. Experimental results show that Light-PREM significantly improves the predictability of real-time applications without requiring software engineers to gain a deep understanding about software memory usage.

the introduction of virtualized multi-core processors in automotive embedded systems opens up opportunities like safe consolidation of previously distributed electronic control units (ECUs) on a shared platform. On the other hand, challenges arise in areas like I/O processing due to overheads experienced in virtualized environments. Designs of I/O controllers have to be adjusted to allow efficient, scalable, and real-time capable communication under these circumstances. Interrupts are an essential part in real-time communication. However, they introduce significant computational overheads, because they force multiple context switches within the CPU. Interrupt coalescing reduces the burden of interrupt processing by merging multiple interrupts within the I/O hardware. However, existing coalescing approaches are not feasible for real-time networks like CAN due to the latencies they introduce. In this paper, we introduce a deadline-aware approach of interrupt coalescing for CAN controllers. It minimizes the amount of interrupts forwarded while guaranteeing the systems real-time capability. We provide three approximations of the method, which can be implemented in hardware. We evaluate the reduction of interrupts that can be achieved with each approach and determine the hardware cost with a prototypical FPGA implementation.

embedded systems are constantly becoming more complex, as they are increasingly equipped with more functionality. Networking capability is one of the most desired features even for embedded systems;hence network applications, typically used in desktop systems, are required to become available in the embedded system domain. Rewriting these applications to fit into embedded root filesystems takes time and effort that may entail a considerable cost. On the other hand, using the existing desktop applications is a good strategy, although introducing many challenges. Formulating storage specifications is easy, but it is not the same for memory as traditionally used memory tools do not utilize the Proportional Set Size value. A thoroughly architecture-independent development methodology is proposed about the construction of an optimized medium-sized network embedded system utilizing the large GNU/Linux code base and emulation. It expands from building, optimizing and comparing libraries, commonly used in embedded systems, optimizing applications to emulating the final system, constructed by an integrated building environment, so as to check functionality and to acquire insight about useful metrics that aid the decision making process. An application of the methodology, focused on the ARM architecture, was deployed demonstrating the value of it, which proves much more efficient than using Android for such constraint environments.

embedded computing systems usually have limited computing power, RAM space, and storage capacity due to the consideration of their cost, energy consumption, and physical size. Some of them such as sensor nodes and embedded consumer electronics only have a small-sized flash memory as their storage with a (simple) file system to manage their data, which are usually of small sizes. However, the existing file systems usually have low space utilization on managing small files and the tail data of large files. In this work, we propose a dynamic tail packing scheme to optimize the space utilization of file systems by dynamically aggregating/packing the tail data of (small) files together. the proposed scheme was implemented in the file system of Linux operating systems to evaluate its capability. the results demonstrate that the proposed scheme could significantly improve the space utilization of existing file systems.

the number and variety of applications for mobile devices continue to grow. However, the resources on mobile devices including computation and storage do not keep pace with the growth. Incorporating the computation capacity on cloud servers into mobile computing has been desired. However, there are numbers of challenging issues to realize it. In this work, we design and implement an elastic computation framework to take advantage the computation capacity on connected devices, to meet the computation demands of ever growing mobile applications. the computation framework enables resource-aware workload migration between mobile devices and connected computers. the framework was experimented and evaluated on cuckoos framework with Android applications, where communication and computation resources are taken into account. the experiments show that the application can be executed with dynamic allocated resources, either local or remote, to enhance its performance. With the elastic framework, the runtime environment can allocate local and remote resources to mobile applications with resource-aware policies.

In this paper, we are introducing a new tool for real-time multi-core systems called SMARTs: Simulating Multi-core Activities for real time systems. the proposed tool encapsulates four phases of multi-core system design for real-time applications. Starting from parsing codes and generating dependency graphs to task scheduling and mapping on multicore systems. the tool also provides the possibility of implementing different scheduling and mapping algorithms for multi-core process systems and evaluating the performance when changing various design parameters. As a proof of concept, We present two different case studies in this paper to explain different features of the proposed tool and how it could be used to speed up the development time.
