In response to the increasing complexity of real-time embedded software, driven by the need for intelligent computation in constrained environments, multicore architectures have emerged as a promising solution. the challenge lies in to choose an effective mapping of the real-time tasks to the various computational resources of these embedded boards, while ensuring real-time constraint satisfaction. To address this problem, our approach rests on two pillars. the first is a domain-specific language designed to capture hardware and software characteristics, constraints, and criteria in a clear and unambiguous manner. the second is a solver method based on Satisfiability Modulo theories solver augmented with a lazy theory to handle real-time aspects. this method allows us to synthesize mappings that respect temporal constraints and optimize specific criteria, such as the power consumption of the embedded board.

the aim of this paper is to investigate and discuss issues on the design and performance evaluation of Android applications concerning alarming systems that would serve users in emergency or dangerous situations to be able to send text messages in real time giving information about their location and about their needs in searching for help. the user, for instance, could send a message to their chosen contacts just by shaking the phone a predefined number of times or following any other pattern of action involving the smartphone. the application designed has, also, some other features like sounding an alarm for 10 s, automatically opening the hospital map searching for hospitals in the area and automatically opening the police map searching for police stations nearby. While opening each of the maps mentioned, the user could check their location as well. Many other similar features could be added in the designed application. But the main goal of the paper is to investigate design issues in Android applications regarding real time performance as well as to evaluate performance in such time critical applications. therefore, the contribution of this paper lies on comparing real time performance of different implementations of such an alarming application as well as on presenting step by step design, architectural and implementation issues of it. © 2024, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

High-density electromyography (HD EMG)-based Pattern Recognition (PR) has attracted increasing interest in real-time Neural-Machine Interface (NMI) applications because HD EMG can capture neuromuscular information from one temporal and two spatial dimensions, and it does not require anatomically targeted electrode placements. In recent years, deep learning methods such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), and hybrid CNNRNN methods have shown great potential in HD EMG PR. Due to the high-density and multi-channel characteristics of HD EMG, the use of HD EMG-based NMIs in practice may be challenged by the unreliability of HD EMG recordings over time. So far, few studies have investigated the robustness of deep learning methods on HD EMG PR when noises and disturbances such as motion artifacts and bad contacts are present in the HD EMG signals. In this paper, we have developed RoHDE - a Robust deep learning-based HD EMG PR framework by introducing a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) that can generate synthetic HD EMG signals to simulate recording conditions affected by disturbances. the generated synthetic HD EMG signals can be utilized to train robust deep learning models against real HD EMG signal disturbances. Experimental results have shown that our proposed RoHDE framework can improve the classification accuracy against disturbances such as contact artifacts and loose contacts from 64% to 99%. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to address the intrinsic robustness issue of deep learning-based HD EMG PR.

the 3-phase task execution model has shown to be a good candidate to tackle the memory bus contention problem. It divides the execution of tasks into computation and memory phases that enable a fine-grained memory bus contention analysis. However, existing works that focus on the bus contention analysis for 3-phase tasks, neglect the fact that memory bus contention strongly relates to the number of bus/memory requests generated by tasks, which, in turn, depends on the content of the cache memories during the execution of those tasks. these existing works assume that the worst-case number of bus/memory requests will be generated during all the memory phases of all tasks, irrespective of the already existing content in the cache memory. this overestimates the memory bus contention of tasks, leading to pessimistic worst-case response time (WCRT) bounds. this work proposes a holistic approach towards bus contention analysis for 3-phase tasks by (1) deriving an upper bound on the actual cache misses of tasks that lead to bus/memory requests;(2) improving State-of-the-Art (SOTA) bus contention analysis of two bus arbitration schemes that dominate all existing works on the bus contention analysis for 3-phase tasks;and (3) performing an extensive experimental evaluation under different settings to compare the proposed analysis against the SOTA. Results show that incorporating a tighter bound on the number of cache misses of tasks into the bus contention analysis can lead to a significant improvement in the task set schedulability. © 2023 IEEE.

Web Application Firewall (WAF) systems play a vital role in protecting web applications from various security vulnerabilities. However, existing WAF solutions are often costly and complex to configure, limiting their accessibility to smaller organizations. this paper aims to develop an affordable and user-friendly WAF framework that mitigates the most common security vulnerabilities identified in the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) Top 10. the proposed WAF framework provides protection against attacks such as Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), Structured Query Language Injection (SQLi), Operating System (OS) Command Injection, File Upload, Denial of Service (DoS), Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF), Path Traversal, and XML External Entity (XXE) attacks. the framework offers an easy-to-use interface with features for easy configuration of mitigation settings. Users can monitor web traffic and receive real-time alerts to quickly identify and respond to potential security threats. Proxy techniques are used to intercept and handle user requests, sanitizing them using the mitigation techniques to prevent the inclusion of malicious code or unauthorized data. Additionally, two machine learning models were implemented. the first model detects malicious requests, and the second model classifies attacks based on their type. Mitigation techniques are employed to filter requests and prevent specific attack types. Regular expressions (Regex) are used to remove malicious code related to XSS, SQL injection, OS Command Injection, File Upload, CSRF, XXE, and Path Traversal attacks. Rate limiting is implemented to mitigate DoS attacks. © 2023 IEEE.

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor has become one of the primary sensors in robotics and autonomous system for high-accuracy situational awareness. In recent years, multi-modal LiDAR systems emerged, and among them, LiDAR-as-a-camera sensors provide not only 3D point clouds but also fixed-resolution 360 degrees panoramic images by encoding either depth, reflectivity, or near-infrared light in the image pixels. this potentially brings computer vision capabilities on top of the potential of LiDAR itself. In this paper, we are specifically interested in utilizing LiDARs and LiDAR-generated images for tracking Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in real-time which can benefit applications including docking, remote identification, or counter-UAV systems, among others. this is, to the best of our knowledge, the first work that explores the possibility of fusing the images and point cloud generated by a single LiDAR sensor to track a UAV without a priori known initialized position. We trained a custom YOLOv5 model for detecting UAVs based on the panoramic images collected in an indoor experiment arena with a motion capture (MOCAP) system. By integrating with the point cloud, we are able to continuously provide the position of the UAV. Our experiment demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed UAV tracking approach compared with methods based only on point clouds or images. Additionally, we evaluated the real-time performance of our approach on the Nvidia Jetson Nano, a popular mobile computing platform.

Evolving data streams containing concept drift breaks the assumption that data are independent and identically distributed (IID) in traditional machine learning models. A series of ensemble-based models have been adapted to data stream learning tasks due to the abilities of dynamic partially update and cooperate with drift detection methods. Adaptive Random Forests (ARF), one of the state-of-the-art in the stream setting, encounters high resource requirements in both efficiency and memory like all ensemble methods. We are committed to reducing running cost without compromising ARF’s performance. In this paper, we propose the Adaptive Random Forest with Dynamic Detectors (ARFDD) which utilizes diversity measurement to combine homogeneous detectors and split heterogeneous ones accordingly, leads to lower computing costs and thus speed up in applications. Experiments on all 8 synthetic and 4 real datasets show a great CPU-time thrift while avoiding performance degradation. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Sustainable computing is essential to our modern digital society. It deals with how computing resources and devices can be developed and used to perform operations as efficiently and eco-friendly as possible. With the explosive use of Deep Learning (DL) application systems whose development is known to be computationally intensive, this paper investigates sustainable development of DL applications to exemplify other software development. While much research on sustainable hardware development has made good progresses to reduce electronic waste and power consumption, sustainable software development is relatively behind. Most aim to find energy-efficient solutions as a result from improving computational efficiency (e.g., via optimization). this is useful but not direct. Before one can develop sustainable software, it is necessary to be able to assess and measure energy usage of the software computation. this paper presents an analytical modeling approach to quantifying energy consumption and illustrates how it can help achieve sustainable software development. In particular, we develop an energy model, for DL application systems, that has been evaluated theoretically and empirically on real systems. Unlike most existing work, our approach provides the ability to pre-determine the required energy consumption of DL applications prior to system implementation. the paper illustrates how the approach can help sustainable development of DL application system for monitoring crop health in smart agriculture in two scenarios: 1) when scaling the DL applications based on energy consumed by various design choices, and 2) when deciding whether to use sensors or drones to expand monitoring coverage. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Various sectors continue to prioritize lone worker safety, which requires creative ways to provide quick support and monitoring. To safeguard lone workers, this paper introduces a new method that makes use of cloud-connected wearable devices that are coupled with Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). the system design relies on sensors embedded in wearable devices that can monitor a range of environmental elements as well as the vital signs of workers. A central cloud platform receives data in real-time via wireless communication from these devices and processes and analyzes it. the system may detect possible dangers or crises using smart techniques and immediately notify those who are supposed to react or the proper authorities. Cloud computing also makes it easy to store, analyze, and monitor large amounts of data over time, which is great for doing proactive risk assessments and improving safety standards. It demonstrates solution's capacity to improve lone worker safety, reduce reaction times, and mitigate hazards via simulations and actual deployment scenarios, efficacy and dependability. this growing body of knowledge on how to protect lone workers in various workplaces by using the power of IoT and cloud computing. © 2024 IEEE.

Designers of embedded real-time systems derive, in general, their time parameters such as activation periods from those of sensors or actuators. By designers, we mean the team in charge of conceiving embedded real-time systems. this team includes Control theory designers and Computer Science designers. Within this paper we present the point of view of Computer Science designers, while the periods proposed by Control theory designers are supposed robust with respect to the physical behavior of the system. the execution times are, then, estimated by studying statically the programs structure or dynamically the programs execution. In some cases, both activation periods and execution times depend on a sensor information. For instance, they depend on the angular speed of wheels within an automotive embedded real-time system and such systems follow a rate-dependent model. Elastic tasks is another model, where one may consider execution time variation depending on the selected period. Within this paper, we are interested in describing statistically the relationship between activation periods and execution times of programs. More precisely, we study the impact of the period variation on the distributions of the execution times. To illustrate our preliminary results, we consider, as case study, the set of programs executing the autopilot of an open-source PX4 drone.
