Homomorphic encryption (HE) is an important cryptographic technique that allows one to directly perform computation on encrypted data without decryption. In HE-based applications using digital images, a user often encrypts a private image captured on a local device. this image can contain noise that negatively affects the results of HE-based applications. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an HE-based adaptive image filter. For small-sized encrypted input data, pixels that have no dependency when sliding a window are encoded into the same ciphertext. For division in the adaptive filter, which is not supported by conventional HE schemes, a numerical approach is adopted. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this paper is the first work that applies division over encrypted data to an image processing algorithm. We implemented the proposed HE-based adaptive filter as a proof-of-concept client-server model. the proposed design can address important privacy issues in image processing applications in internet-of-things and cyberphysical systems, where many devices are connected through a vulnerable network.

Concurrently, remote vehicle monitoring systems with embedded eSIMs are becoming ubiquitous, enabling real-time communication with control centers, and facilitating over-the-air (OTA) upgrades for vehicle performance. As future mobility relies heavily on robust mobile networks for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-environment communication, low latency is crucial. this study investigates data transfer rates in 5G networks, evaluating offerings from four Slovakian mobile operators. the methodology employs a Land Rover Defender equipped with measurement hardware, using SIM cards from four operators for real-world testing in a 5G-covered area in Bratislava, with the vehicle traveling at 80 km/h. the vehicle-mounted measuring system includes essential components such as an Intel NUC computer, precise positioning system with Ublox GNSS modules, time synchronization system, vehicle speed determination system, and an internet network connection system with four Teltonika RUTX50 routers. the software testing framework focuses on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) communication, crucial for automotive applications, enabling the transmission of significant data volumes. the chapter details the application layer, physical structure, and system components, with a key emphasis on the synchronization service. the data gathering application collects vehicle information, including status, location, and speed, while the reference and measuring services ensure smooth data transmission. this research illuminates the performance of 5G networks in moving vehicles, highlighting the critical role of network reliability and low latency in the evolving landscape of connected vehicle applications. © the Author(s).

In modern safety-critical embedded systems (e.g., automotive/avionic systems), it is increasingly important to integrate components with different critical levels into one physical platform considering space, weight, and heat generation. the most common case is a mixed-time-sensitive system (MTSS), which is usually composed of an RTOS (real-time Operating System) and a GPOS (General-Purpose Operating System). In MTSS, cache sharing between RTOS and GPOS often causes inter-task interference, making WCET estimation overly pessimistic due to the increase of cache miss rate and task execution time variances. the existing cache management solutions, such as dynamic and static schemes, are challenging to be applied to MTSS. In this paper, we propose a novel practical method, termed cacheSPM, to eliminate the cache interference in MTSS. CacheSPM statically partitions cache resources during the compilation phase, effectively preventing the GPOS from influencing the cache resources belonged to the RTOS. Compared to the traditional partition schemes, cacheSPM has no intervention of memory manager and additional runtime overhead. Evaluation reveals that this method improves the memory utilization and reduces overhead in a balanced way, with the memory access latency reduced by 80.7% on average, and guarantees the real-time capability of RTOS without negatively affecting the performance of GPOS.

Deep learning (DL) has dramatically evolved and become one of the most successful machine learning techniques. A variety of DL-enabled applications have been widely integrated into software systems, including embedded ones. Although having achieved very successful results in accuracy, the large size of deep neural networks could require significant runtime and computing resource consumption. To overcome these drawbacks, TensorRT has been developed and may be incorporated into popular DL frameworks such as PyTorch and Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX). In this paper, focusing on inference, we provide a comprehensive evaluation on the performances of TensorRT. Specifically, we evaluate inference output validation, inference time, inference throughput, and GPU memory usage. Our results demonstrate that TensorRT is able to significantly improve the inference efficiency metrics without compromising inference accuracy. Furthermore, TensorRT may be adopted via several alternative workflows. Our evaluation also shows the pros and cons of these TensorRT workflows. We analyze that for each workflow and discuss the workflow selection for different application scenarios. © 2022 IEEE.

AR technologies could provide effective and efficient solutions in challenging domains, such as Smart Cities and promote human-city interactions. Smart Cities have a complex structure with constant and real-time information exchange. In this context, the design and development of sophisticated software tools with a human-centric approach is a necessity. the Internet of things is the cornerstone of Smart Cities and provides ubiquitous connectivity and real-time data exchange. To this end, IoT is an enabler of AR Human Computer Interactions. Critical Smart City infrastructures, such as water management systems, are of great importance as they can raise awareness among the public about environmental and social issues. this paper demonstrates a novel system architecture that enables citizens and practitioners to interface with IoT water management systems in the Smart City context. In order to demonstrate the architecture's capabilities, a pilot system was developed. the pilot system showcases a water quality monitoring system and an AR application, featuring two types of users, citizens and administrators. the AR application provides different functionalities based on the user type. Citizens are able to get critical information regarding water quality, while administrators are also provided with insights about the hardware and the IoT infrastructure. the proposed system aims to establish an easy-to-use infrastructure that engages citizens and practitioners in the Smart City ecosystem, with the use of innovative state-of-the-art immersive technologies. the utilization of AR as an HCI interface between end-users and IoT systems can accelerate the adoption of AR applications in the Smart City context.

Multiprocessor resource synchronization and locking protocols are of great importance to utilize the computation power of multiprocessor real-time systems. Hence, in the past decades a large number of protocols have been developed and analyzed. the recently proposed dependency graph approach has significantly improved the schedulability for frame-based and periodic real-time task systems. However, the dependency graph approach only supports non-nested resource access, i.e., each critical section can only access one shared resource. In this paper, we develop a dependency graph based protocol that allows nested resource access, where a critical section can access multiple shared resources at the same time. First, constraint programming is applied to construct a dependency graph that determines the execution order of critical sections. Afterwards, a schedule is generated based on this order. To show the feasibility of our proposed protocol, we provide extensive numerical evaluations under different configurations. the evaluation results show that our approach has very good performance with respect to schedulability for frame-based and periodic realtime task systems, whereas the existing results applicable for sporadic task systems have worse performance under such a limited setting.

On-board computing capacity remains a key bottleneck in modern machine inference pipelines that run on embedded hardware, such as aboard autonomous drones or cars. To mitigate this bottleneck, recent work proposed an architecture for segmenting input frames of complex modalities, such as video, and prioritizing downstream machine perception tasks based on criticality of the respective segments of the perceived scene. Criticality-based prioritization allows limited machine resources (of lower-end embedded GPUs) to be spent more judiciously on tracking more important objects first. this paper explores a novel dimension in criticality-based prioritization of machine perception;namely, the role of criticalitydependent image resizing as a way to improve the trade-off between perception quality and timeliness. Given an assessment of criticality (e.g., an object's distance from the autonomous car), the scheduler is allowed to choose from several image resizing options (and related inference models) before passing the resized images to the perception module. Experiments on an AI-powered embedded platform with a real-world driving dataset demonstrate significant improvements in the trade-off between perception accuracy and response time when the proposed resizing algorithm is used. the improvement is attributed to two advantages of the proposed scheme: (i) improved preferential treatment of more critical objects by reducing time spent on less critical ones, and (ii) improved image batching within the GPU, thanks to re-sizing, leading to better resource utilization.

In modern warfare and civilian applications, the rapid adaptability and high configurability of radar systems have become an urgent requirement. the limitations of traditional radar systems, particularly in terms of processing capabilities, adaptability, and power efficiency, call for a new solution. To address this, this paper proposes a radar system design that combines Radio Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) technology with reconfigurable computing. this design aims to provide performance and functionality surpassing traditional radar architectures through integrated high-performance hardware and flexible software configurations. Leveraging the high integration capabilities of RFSoC, our design achieves seamless connectivity from the analog front-end to the digital back-end, allowing high-speed data acquisition, real-time signal processing, and multi-channel data synchronization to be accomplished on a single chip, significantly enhancing the overall efficiency of the system. this study elaborates on the hardware architecture design and software architecture design of the radar system, introducing the RFSoC-based multi-channel synchronization mechanism and wideband calibration technology. We employ a precise clock synchronization network and complex algorithms to ensure signal synchronization and consistency across the entire spectrum, enabling the system to support wideband operations and provide high-resolution radar imaging. By implementing a digital beamforming (DBF) algorithm based on fast Fourier transform (FFT), the system can process target signals from multiple directions and offers a software-defined approach to quickly adapt to new operational modes and task requirements. Experimental results demonstrate that the radar system not only achieves high-precision multi-beam transmission and reception in the 11 to 12 GHz frequency band but also exhibits outstanding performance in multi-target tracking and wideband signal processing. the profound significance

Standard distribution middleware has traditionally been perceived as complex software which is not suitable for satisfying the highest certification criteria in safety-critical environments. However, this idea is slowly changing and there are efforts such as the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) consortium to integrate standard distribution middleware into the development of avionic systems. this integration facilitates the interoperability and portability of avionic applications, but there are still challenges that need to be addressed before full success can be achieved. To this end, this paper explores the usage of the Data Distribution Service for real-time systems (DDS) on top of a partitioned system with a communication network based on the ARINC 664 specification (precisely, the AFDX network). this work specifically identifies the incompatibilities between the two standards and also proposes potential solutions. A set of overhead metrics of using DDS in a distributed partitioned platform is also provided.
