In this paper we consider data freshness and overload handling in embedded systems. the requirements on data management and overload handling are derived from an engine control software. Data items need to be up-to-date, and to achieve this data dependencies must be considered, i.e., updating a data item requires other data items are up-to-date. We also note that a correct result of a calculation can in some cases be calculated using a subset of the inputs. Hence, data dependencies can be divided into required and not required data items, e.g., only a subset of data items affecting the fuel calculation in an engine control needs to be calculated during a transient overload in order to reduce the number of calculations. Required data items must always be up-to-date, whereas not required data items can be stale. We describe an algorithm that dynamically determines which data items need to be updated taking workload, data freshness, and data relationships into consideration. Performance results show that the algorithm suppresses transient overloads better than (m, k)- and skip-over scheduling combined with established algorithms to update data items. the performance results are collected from an implementation of a real-time database on the realtime operating system muC/OS-II. To investigate whether the system is occasionally overloaded an offline analysis algorithm estimating period times of updates is presented

Securing communication sessions between networked embedded systems is a major challenge that needs to be addressed as an increasing number of such systems become Internet-enabled. Securely and quickly establishing a session key between communicating nodes in a network requires authentication of node identities. In this paper, we propose a simple elliptic-curve based key negotiation protocol suitable for fully hardware implementation as a protocol on chip (PoC). the protocol uses the elliptic curve variants of both the Diffie Hellmann exchange and the digital signature algorithm. Timing results demonstrate that an end-to-end protocol run can be performed in as little as 28ms on a 25MHz clock, which is several times faster than previous microprocessor-based implementations of similar protocols. the results indicate that session keys can thereby have shorter lifetimes, since there is little computational overhead in re-generating them, thus enhancing overall security of the networked embedded systems

the load parameter of a sporadic task system is defined to be the largest possible cumulative execution requirement that can be generated by jobs of the task system over any time interval, normalized by the length of the interval. this parameter is known to play a very important role in the uniprocessor feasibility analysis of sporadic task systems. In this paper, it is shown that the load of a sporadic task system may be used as an accurate indicator of its feasibility upon preemptive multiprocessors as well. Exact algorithms, and approximate ones that can be guaranteed to be accurate to within an arbitrary additive error > 0, for computing a task system's load are presented and proven correct. the performance of these algorithms is evaluated by simulation over randomly generated task systems

Wireless sensor networks have been a very active research field in the past few years. However, most of extant research has focused on wireless sensing, such as environmental and habitat monitoring. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of applying wireless technologies in industrial real-time process control systems. We define a minimum set of assumptions about the underlying sensor networks in order to achieve real-time support for process control. these assumptions are necessary and practical from an industrial perspective. We formulate the modeling of a wireless process control configuration as a multi-processor scheduling problem. the resulting scheduling problem is solved by the scheduler synthesis tool *** to produce a valid configuration for deployment. the deployment, because of the way it is derived, provides real-time wireless support for the controlled processes. Simulation results on data from real plant configurations show that this approach can also drastically reduce potential interferences between wireless transfers

In this paper we address the "rate analysis" problem for media-processing platforms consisting of multiple processor cores connected in a pipelined fashion. More precisely, we aim at determining fight bounds on the rates at which multimedia streams can be fed into such architectures. these bounds depend on architectural constraints (e.g. the available on-chip memory, bus arbitration policies, etc), as well as the application characteristics (e.g. application partitioning and mapping, workload rates generated by different tasks, etch the proposed framework for rate analysis can be used for fast design space exploration to determine how these bounds change with different architectural parameters, mapping of the application, or changing the QoS requirements associated with the input streams

A QoS adaptation to dynamically changing system conditions that takes into consideration the user's constraints on the stability of service provisioning is presented. the goal is to allow the system to make QoS adaptation decisions in response to fluctuations in task traffic flow, under the control of the user. We pay special attention to the case where monitoring the stability period and resource load variation of service level agreements for different types of services is used to dynamically adapt future stability periods, according to a feedback control scheme. System's adaptation behaviour can be configured according to a desired confidence level on future resource usage. the viability of the proposed approach is validated by preliminary experiments

Applying classical dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) techniques to real-time systems running on processors with discrete voltage/frequency modes causes a waste of computational resources. In fact, whenever the ideal speed level computed by the DVS algorithm is not available in the system, to guarantee the feasibility of the task set, the processor speed must be set to the nearest level greater than the optimal one, thus underutilizing the system. Whenever the task set allows a certain degree of flexibility in specifying timing constraints, rate adaptation techniques can be adopted to balance performance (which is a function of task rates) vs. energy consumption (which is a function of the processor speed). In this paper, we propose a new method that combines discrete DVS management with elastic scheduling to fully exploit the available computational resources. Depending on the application requirements, the algorithm can be set to improve performance or reduce energy consumption, so enhancing the flexibility of the system. A reclaiming mechanism is also used to take advantage of early completions

In ubiquitous computing environments, context-awareness is one of the most important research topics. Computers embedded in our surrounding can extract information about a user, and the information makes it possible to offer personalized services according to the user's preference. To extract a large amount of context information, wearable sensor devices become more important in the near future. However, it is not easy to develop context-aware services that use context information from wearable sensor devices because of the gap between low-level sensor information and high-level context that the services require. In this paper, we propose a software infrastructure for wearable sensor networks. We first discuss the requirements to retrieve context information from wearable sensor networks. then, we introduce our software infrastructure named Cinnamon that extracts high-level context from low-level context information retrieved from wearable sensor networks. the software infrastructure makes it dramatically easy to develop context-aware services for wearable sensor networks. We present the design and implementation of Cinnamon, and discuss our current prototype implementation

It is generally accepted that dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) is one of the most effective techniques of energy minimization for real-time applications. the effectiveness comes from the fact that the amount of energy consumption is quadractically proportional to the voltage applied to the processor. the penalty is the execution delay, which is linearly and inversely proportional to the voltage. According to the granularity of units to which voltage scaling is applied, the DVS problem is divided into two subproblems: inter-task DVS problem, in which the determination of the voltage is carried out on a task-by-task basis and the voltage assigned to the task is unchanged during the whole execution of the task, and intra-task DVS problem, in which the operating voltage of a task is dynamically adjusted according to the execution behavior to reflect the changes of the required number of cycles to finish the task before the deadline. Frequent voltage transitions may cause an adverse effect on energy minimization due to the increase of the overhead of transition time and energy. In this paper, we survey and describe, in a theoretical aspect, state-of-art techniques of dynamic voltage scaling problems, which include: (1) inter-task DVS problem, (2) intra-task DVS problem, (3) integrated inter-task and intra-task DVS problem, and (4) transition-aware DVS problem

Mobile location estimation is becoming an important value-added service for mobile phone operators. Many mobile location estimation algorithms based on the cellular radio networks have been proposed but there exists no general solution since each algorithm has its own advantage depending on specific terrain and environmental factors. In this paper, we propose and investigate three algorithm selectors, one with a LDA classifier and the other two with Bayes classifiers using either a Naive Bayes probabilistic model or a Bayes probabilistic model, to select the best mobile location estimation algorithms from our previous work in order to combine their merits, and provide a more accurate estimation for location services. We have tested these three algorithm selectors with real data taken in Hong Kong. Experiment results have shown that they are all useful in particular, and the one with a Bayes probabilistic model outperforms all other existing location algorithms among different kinds of terrains in terms of average errors
