Project ExScal (for Extreme Scale)fielded a 1000+ node wireless sensor network and a 200+ node peer-to-peer ad hoc network of 802.11 devices in a 1.3km by 300m remote area in Florida, USA during December 2004. In comparison with previous deployments, the ExScal application is relatively complex and its networks are the largest ones of either type fielded to date. In this paper we overview the key requirements of ExScal, the corresponding design of the hardware/software platform and application, and some results of our experiments.

In this paper, we consider a computation algorithm for checkpoint placement in a real-time application. Under the condition where the processing time is bounded by a time limit, we derive sequentially the optimal checkpoint sequence based on the dynamic programming. In numerical examples, we examine the dependence of optimal checkpoint sequence on both failure time and processing time distributions and investigate the effectiveness of sequential checkpoint placement.

the real-time CORBA and minimumCORBA specifications are important steps towards defining standard-based middleware which can satisfy real-time requirements in an embedded system. To reach a broad acceptance in the real-time and embedded community, these specifications have to facilitate the utilization of traditional real-time networks for embeddedsystems. the Controller Area Network (CAN) is one of the most important networks in the field of real-timeembeddedsystems. Consequently, this paper presents a CAN-based connection-oriented communication model and its integration into real-time CORBA. In order to make efficient use of the advantages of CAN, we present a new inter-ORB protocol, which uses smaller message headers for CAN and maps the CAN priorities to bands of CORBA priorities. We also present design and implementation details and evaluate the performance of the new inter-ORB protocol. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
