We describe the semidefinite analog of the vector packing problem, and show that the semidefinite programming relaxations for MAXCUT [10] and graph coloring [17] are in this class of problems. We extend a method of Bienstock and Iyengar [5] which was based on ideas from Nesterov [25] to design an algorithm for computing E-approximate solutions for this class of semidefinite programs. Our algorithm is in the spirit of Klein and Lu [18], and decreases the dependence of the run-time on epsilon from epsilon(-2) to epsilon(-1). For sparse graphs, our method is faster than the best specialized interior point methods. A significant feature of our method is that it treats boththe MAXCUT and the graph coloring problem in a unified manner.

In this paper, an integer linear programming (ILP) based approach is proposed for integrated hardware/software (HW/SW) partitioning and pipelined scheduling of embeddedsystems for multimedia applications. the ILP approach not only partitions and maps each computation task of a particular multimedia application onto a component of the heterogeneous multiprocessor architecture, but also schedules and pipelines the execution of these computation tasks while considering communication time. the objective is to minimize the total component cost and the number of pipeline stages subject to the throughput constraint on the pipelined architecture. Cyber Composer is a novel and interactive cyber instrument that enables both musicians and music laypersons to dynamically control the tonality and the melody of the music that they generate/compose through hand motion and gestures. Cyber Composer generates music according to hand motions and gestures of the users in the absence of real musical instruments. Music theories are embedded in the design so that melody flow and musical expressions like the pitch, rhythm and volume of the melody can be controlled and generated in real-time by wearing a pair of motion-sensing gloves. Also central to the design is the mapping of the hand motions and gestures to musical expressions that is intuitive and requires minimal training. embeddedsystems have been developing rapidly, and flash memory technology has become an essential building block because of its shock-resistance, low power consumption, and non-volatile nature. Since flash memory is a write-once and bulk-erase medium, an intelligent allocation algorithm is essential to providing applications efficient storage service. In this paper, we propose three allocation algorithms - a first come first serve (FCFS) method, a first re-arrival first serve (FRFS) method, and an online first re-arrival first serve (OFRFS) method. Both FCFS and OFRFS are online allocation mechanisms which make allocation decision as the requests arrive. the FRFS method, which serves as an offline mechanism, is developed as the standard of performance comparison. the capability of the proposed mechanisms is demonstrated by a series of experiments and simulations. the experimental results indicate that FRFS provide superior performance when the data access pattern is analyzed in advance, and the online OFRFS method provides good performance by run-time estimation of access patterns.

the contribution of this paper is to present a novel and well-experimented middleware service platform and its architecture for service gateway based distributed systems. this is called the MidGate platform. the research problem that the MidGate platform addresses is how to facilitate the development of interoperable applications into heterogeneous and distributed service gateway based environments. the paper is based on the constructive method of analyzing the related research results, technologies, and trial systems. the MidGate platform is a middleware platform that provides communication middleware, a set of generic service elements, and a dynamically reconfigurable service framework to be applied in the development and deployment of distributed applications. the MidGate architecture is defined on the basis of the requirements of realapplications, and it is evaluated in a series of laboratory prototypes reviewed in the paper.
