Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRSs) offer a revolutionary approach to wireless communication by dynamically controlling the properties of electromagnetic waves. By manipulating wavefronts without requiring radio frequency links, IRSs can enhance spectrum and energy efficiency, reduce costs, and improve overall system performance. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have garnered significant attention due to their mobility and adaptability. However, real-time data transmission between UAVs can be hindered by obstacles and security risks. By combining IRSs and UAVs, we can create unparalleled opportunities in demanding environments. through coordinated movements and intelligent wave reflection, both systems can optimize wireless signal propagation. this paper provides a comprehensive review of IRS-assisted UAV communications. We explore existing research, introduce novel technologies and applications, and highlight potential research directions for developing low-cost and energy-efficient wireless systems. Additionally, we address current challenges and outline promising areas for future study.

Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) are powerful tools for the modeling of complex systems, one of which is time series modeling. Although advocated for their interpretability, existing methods measure concept relevance based on static structural features often overlooking the dynamic influences over the time. this paper presents a novel SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) framework based Distributed FCM model. the proposed approach invokes functions to determine the SHAP concept relevance scores for the Distributed Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (DFCMs) for time series prediction, marginalizing over each concept and comparing the predicted states to an expected baseline iteratively. this method is interpreted as measuring the time-varying impact of each concept through the dynamic course of the system. the SHAP-based approach improves the interpretability and application of FCMs to the modeling of complex time-course systems.

Recent times have overseen exceedingly high crime rates, and the appalling situation demands additional personal security measures. In light of the new advancements in technology, the demand for wireless systems has witnessed tremendous affinity, with major domains rapidly attempting to adopt the technique into their custom applications. Security is one such domain where wireless technology has thescope to achieve numerous practical applications. In one such instance, this study deploys the WiFi protocol over an intruder detection system using a TI LaunchPadMSP430. the TI launchpad is connected to the NuttyFi board which provides it with the internet connectivity required to put it online. the motion sensor acts as the input device that triggers the alarm which triggers output devices for intruder warning, in this case, a buzzerin parallel. the system also updates the alert in real-time online over the Blynk web server. this article combines embedded programming, wireless communication, hardware components, and sensing to build an intruder alert system. Using a page from technological baskets like IoT, RF, andembedded systems, the system fulfils a crucial requirement of the current society. Cross-platform usage boosts the utility of this system, putting it in the hands of millions of users.

Object segmentation is critical for addressing binpicking challenges in robotics, where scenes often involve overlapping, partially occluded objects. Accurate segmentation facilitates precise object localisation and identification. In this work, we introduce a Unity-based tool with domain randomisation functionalities for generating synthetic cluttered bin-picking scenes with automatic pixel-level annotations. We validated the usefulness of the system in two real use cases: the manipulation of vegetables and mechanical parts. By allowing models to be trained entirely on synthetic data, this solution eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming real-world data collection and annotation.

With recent advances in industrial robotics, autonomous robotic arms need to deal with complex environments using sensors such as depth cameras. Structured-light cameras are often employed for this purpose as they provide high precision measurements and increasing speed acquisition. Furthermore, as digital twins are becoming more common for training and guiding real robots, there is a growing need for high-performance sensor simulations. this paper thus introduces a fast, GPU-implemented, and realistic simulation tool for structured-light depth cameras. It can compute 3D point clouds with noisy coordinates in real-time for a set of cameras in complex, dynamic scenes simulated by a physics engine. It can also interactively evaluate coverage and overlap of simulated point clouds on objects of interest. Finally, by maximizing their values, as a pre-process or during simulation for motionless scenes, it allows optimal cameras positioning. To demonstrate the capabilities of our simulation tool, we present two use cases. the first showcases a real-time simulation of a high-speed structured-light camera operating at 20 frames per second, mounted on a robotic arm that dismantles an electrical battery. the second illustrates the optimal positioning of a set of fixed structured-light cameras in a cluttered environment, where a robotic arm performs the cutting of a glove box. To our knowledge, our tool is the first to offer such real-time simulations and rapid structured-light camera positioning in complex robotic environments.

this paper proposes a broadband comb-line array antenna for low-terahertz (low-thz) automotive imaging radar. the antenna is composed of 18 array units, 42 parasitic units and 8 grooves on the array units. the low sidelobe performance is attained by tuning the width of the element. the lateral distribution of the current on the large-width radiating elements is reduced by narrowing the width and introducing slots at the top. this method further reduces the sidelobe level (SLL) of the antenna. Furthermore, a wider bandwidth is obtained by introducing parasitic cells around the radiating elements. Simulation outcomes corroborate that the antenna attains return losses superior to 10 dB from 86.04 GHz to 129.21 GHz. the antenna demonstrates a normalized maximum SLL of -18 dB in the H-plane and a -3 dB beamwidth spanning approximately 11.7°. A wider bandwidth allows the automotive imaging radar to acquire more target information per unit of time, and the lower SLL enhances the fidelity of the received signal, concomitantly reducing susceptibility to undesirable interference effects.

the use of wireless networks for intra-aircraft communication has garnered significant attention, with the goal of increasing efficiency and flexibility while decreasing weight, fuel consumption, and maintenance costs compared to traditional wired avionics systems. the key question is whether wireless solutions will offer reliability and latency satisfying intra-aircraft applications requirements. this survey reviews the current state of wireless solutions in terms of reliability and latency as a potential fit for intra-aircraft communications, and identifies future research directions to improve these metrics.

Pressure ulcers/injuries (PU/Is) are localized damage to the skin and/or underlying tissue caused by prolonged pressure to an area of the body. PU/Is affect over 2.5 million individuals in the United States annually, are associated with increased morbidity and mortality, and incur a cost of approximately $11 billion to the US healthcare system. Mitigating PU/Is continues to be a challenging task using traditional methods due to their time-and labor-intensive nature, and existing technological solutions tend to be prohibitively expensive, inefficiently implemented, or ineffective. thus, there is a clear unmet need for a holistic, end-to-end, hospital-integrated, patient-centric system for PU/I prevention. Such a system can monitor pressure at high-risk areas and uses real-time sensor data, analysis, and visualization to guide clinicians and caregivers to perform effective preventative measures. In this paper, we describe a proof of concept of this system, which integrates: (A) a prototype "smart wound dressing" capable of detecting of changes in interface pressure and patient angle over time, including during routine patient repositioning maneuvers;and (B) an open software infrastructure that collects pressure-over-time data, stores, analyzes, and displays them to clinicians and caregivers. We present preliminary results obtained using our current prototype which uses machine learning algorithms to infer a patient's current position based on data from the pressure sensor.

Today’s smartphones have more and more features that so far were only assigned to personal computers. Every year these devices are composed of better and more efficient components. Everything indicates that modern smartphones are replacing ordinary computers in various activities. High computing power is required for tasks such as image processing, speech recognition and object detection. this paper analyses the performance of the OpenCL (Open Compute Language) environment on mobile devices, which is a library dedicated to high-speed parallel computing. this paper examines how smartphones can access a library that, as it turned out, is not officially supported on the Android platform, and briefly describes the evaluated library. As a part of the study, this API (Application Programming Interface) was tested in the context of the achieved computing power, memory flow rate, speed of matrix multiplication and the possibility of processing the image from the camera in real-time. the obtained results were presented in graphical format, described and commented.
