the increasing complexity of modern applications calls for more complex embedded computing resources, which integrate several processing units with specialized hardware and virtualization support on a single platform to boost the computation capabilities. these subsystems require a communication system able to support different flows with diverse real-time requirements. In this context, the time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) family of standards plays an important role. this work proposes the design and the implementation of a framework for enabling TSN communications in heterogeneous platforms with virtualization. Preliminary experimental results are reported, which provide some insights on the limitations and advantages of the proposed framework.

After the COVID-induced lock-downs, augmented/virtual reality turned from leisure to desired reality. real-time 3D audio is a crucial enabler for these technologies. Nevertheless, systems offering object spatialization in 3D audio fall in two limited cases. they either require long-running pre-renders or involve powerful computing platforms. Furthermore, they mainly focus on active audio sources, while humans rely on the sound's interactions with passive obstructions to sense their environment. We propose a hardware co-processor for real-time 3D audio spatialization supporting passive obstructions. Our solution attains similar latency w.r.t. workstations while draining a tenth of the power, making it suitable for embedded applications.

Smart health kits are innovative devices that can monitor various health-related parameters in real time. Inadequate healthcare facilities in rural areas, people have limited access to quality healthcare services, leading to increased morbidity and mortality rates. Lack of patient monitoring makes it challenging to identify and treat illnesses in their early stages since remote patients frequently do not receive routine checkups and monitoring. the enormous cost of healthcare is a significant burden for many individuals, particularly those living in poverty. Inefficient healthcare delivery in the traditional healthcare system is often bogged down by bureaucracy and inefficiency, leading to long wait times, incorrect diagnoses, and ineffective treatments. real-time healthcare monitoring is necessary to deliver effective treatment. real-time patient data, such as vital signs, medical history, and other pertinent information, must be available to healthcare practitioners. the goal of the smart healthcare kit using an embedded system is to address the health problems of persons while driving vehicles. the embedded medical sensors such as temperature, heart rate, and alcohol gas sensors collect and transmit patient data to healthcare providers in real time enabling them to make informed decisions about patient care. this kit may be mounted to the steering wheel of any vehicle, making it simple to use and accessible for anyone while driving. the temperature sensor keeps track of the driver’s body temperature and alerts the driver if it rises above a certain threshold. the heart rate sensor monitors the heart rate and notifies the user when it changes unexpectedly. Similarly, an alcohol gas sensor measures the alcohol concentration in the driver’s exhaled breath to determine whether they have consumed alcohol. thus, the smart health kit is an effective tool that can detect serious health hazards, ensure motorists are healthy while operating vehicles, and prevent accidents

Neuromorphic hardware shows promising potential for employment in edge computing applications, as it can provide real-time and low-power elaboration of complex data directly on edge using computational paradigm based on Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). However, such systems cannot be deployed as edge devices by themselves, as they require an external host for configuration and data input management. In this paper, we present a chip-level integrated system performing on-edge configuration of a neuromorphic platform. the proposed solution makes use of two existing open-source platforms: the low-power RISC-V processor Rocket Chip and the digital SNN processor ODIN. We built the two systems into a single SoC using the Chipyard framework, and connected them by designing a communication interface using ODIN's SPI and AER input/output ports. We validated the system by RTL simulation of a synfire chain running on ODIN, where Rocket Chip sets up configuration of the network, triggers the first spike, then collects the simulation results. the synthesized design utilizes a modest amount of resources on a PYNQ-Z2 board: 16% of LUT slices, 11% of Block RAMs and 8 pins, leaving plenty of room to integrate other peripherals or systems. the present work represents a first step towards seamless integration of neuromorphic technologies with state-of-the-art processors, improving on the ease of use of neuromorphic devices and leading the way into widespread use of SNN coprocessors in edge computing applications.

FPGA technology for developing safety-based PLCs for industrial applications (for example NPP I&C) became more popular. One of the main part of FPGA-based I&C system lifecycle is verification. FPGA Project Verification main stages are described. Verification influence on product development time, cost and quality are described. the article presents a new approach to performing the functional testing stage. this approach is based on the use of formal algebraic methods. the main advantage of using this approach is the increase in testing efficiency due to the use of the procedure for automatic generation of test cases. More than 10 years' experience of verification approaches of Radics LLC verification team is presented.

this paper presents the design and implementation of a smart insole system aimed at monitoring and reducing back pain and injuries among older workers in physically demanding occupations. the system leverages flexible pressure sensors embedded within insoles to monitor plantar pressure distribution, providing a less intrusive alternative to traditional back monitoring methods. the collected data is wirelessly transmitted and processed in real time, enabling effective classification of lifting techniques and providing feedback to users. User tests demonstrated high levels of satisfaction and ease of use, indicating the system’s potential for seamless integration into daily activities. the lift classification model achieved an accuracy of 98.8%, highlighting its effectiveness in identifying improper lifting techniques. Power consumption analysis confirmed the system’s efficiency, making it viable for long-term use in the workplace. this study underscores the potential of smart insole technology in occupational health, offering a promising solution to mitigate back pain and injuries among older workers.

the secure operation of Industrial Control systems (ICS) is a critical requirement for ensuring the safety of the plants and of the people involved in the industrial processes they control. the advent of Industrial IoT devices boosted the innovation in the development of new industrial applications but at the same time it determined an increase of the attack surface and of the number of vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious entities. Honeypots are a technology whose goal is to deceive attackers by emulating a real system for allowing the gathering of relevant information about the malicious activity which can be later used to devise suitable countermeasures. Honeypots effectiveness mainly depends on the level of realism with which system interactions are reproduced. In this paper we propose a simple yet effective scheme that enable a very high level of interaction for ICS honeypots by resorting to hybrid solution including both hardware and software building blocks.

Integrating mobile computing technologies and human health activities using IoMT devices can accelerate biomedical discovery and improve the efficiency of healthcare research and delivery. However, the quality of the collected health data is critical for the success of these efforts. In this paper, a hybrid intrusion detection system is proposed to identify cyberattacks in real time on medical devices. the system combines a logistic regression-based detector using network traffic features with a gradient-boosted tree-based detector using medical sensor features. Evaluation of the system using a publicly available dataset shows an accuracy score of 95.4% using only 11 features, compared to the current best accuracy of 92.98% achieved by artificial neural networks using 40 features. Additionally, by combining the decisions of the two individual detection systems, the number of attacks detected is increased from 111 to 305 out of a total of 423 attack instances, improving the sensitivity score and addressing the challenge of effectively and efficiently integrating different detection technologies in a hybrid intrusion detection system. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first attempt to combine multiple misuse detection models in a hybrid system to secure both IoMT devices and their networking equipment across the entire healthcare spectrum of the IoMT. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Soft and flexible capacitive tactile sensors have become important tools for precise force measurement in wearable health monitors, soft robotics, and advanced human-machine interaction systems. their real-time ability to detect and quantify forces opens new boundaries in medical diagnostics, automation safety, and adaptive technologies. this work presents a 4×4 capacitive sensor matrix fabricated using thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) substrates and nanoparticle-based silver ink, with a 300 μm Ecoflex 30 dielectric layer to ensure high sensitivity and reliability. the matrix integrates passive electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding to enhance signal integrity while maintaining robust force detection. the system employs a mutual capacitance sensing board (MUCA) for data acquisition and an SHT30 sensor for monitoring environmental parameters like temperature and humidity. real-time data processing and visualization are achieved via a lightweight Wi-Fi-enabled dashboard hosted on an Arduino Nano 33 IoT microcontroller. this dashboard dynamically displays force distributions, heatmaps, and environmental metrics, offering an intuitive user interface. the sensor matrix demonstrates a force detection range of 1 to 16 N, with a strong linear correlation (R2 = 0.9952) between force and mutual capacitance changes, validated through extensive single and multi-touch testing using a universal manipulator. the system's battery-efficient design enables continuous operation for over 148 hours, making it suitable for remote and autonomous applications. Potential applications span wearable prosthetics, soft robotics, and IoT-driven systems. this work highlights the integration of scalable fabrication, robust signal processing, and real-time visualization to offer a versatile and energy-efficient tactile sensing solution.

Scheduling algorithms in distributed heterogeneous systems have been the subject of extensive research. However, with the advancement of technology, addressing real-time, reliability, and energy consumption issues in dynamic environments has become increasingly critical. Existing studies mostly focus on static approaches, which are challenging to achieve scheduling objectives rapidly and adaptively. therefore, we propose a novel dynamic energy-aware scheduling algorithm for deadlines and reliability constrained applications. Firstly, we introduce a prioritization method for multitasking applications to ensure more applications meet their deadlines. Subsequently, we present specific strategies for task allocation to achieve a better trade-off between energy consumption and reliability. Experimental results on randomly generated applications validate the superiority of our proposed method in terms of performance compared to other algorithms.
