Oxygen levels and heart rate joint monitoring is based on specialized, and most of the times, expensive oximetry devices. According to literature, many studies highlight the necessity of connecting oximetry devises, under well-known wireless protocols, such as Bluetooth, Wifi, ZigBee and others, for more efficient realtime monitoring of human bio signals. However, most of the studies indicate a gap regarding an energy efficient and cost - effective end to end system for wireless monitoring of oxygen and heart rates, in IoT medical applications. To this end, our work, focuses on the design of a wireless oximeter device that bases its operation on the integrated and power efficient MAX30100 circuitry, and a customized lightweight ZigBee - based protocol for wireless bio signals transfer.

Robin soft-core is a new, small footprint, open-source processor, designed as an educational project, using the hardware description language VHDL. the processor is being developed based on specifications which are detailed in the present paper. Each processor part is implemented as a student project. the relevant documentation is part of the teaching material in the lesson of digital systems design, as well as in other modules of the curriculum, like computer architecture and embeddedsystems. Being an open project, the development of the Robin soft-core invites students and other contributors to develop their own version of the processor and its peripherals. the current implementation is based on a MAX10 FPGA device by Intel.

the deployment and integration of a low power pervasive wireless sensor system, for measuring and processing action potentials bio signals for plants, is an interesting and challenging technical task. In our experiments, we focus on measuring electrical potentials for Chrysanthemum and Sansevieria plants. We note that the wireless pervasive sensor system, for realtime data collection, should be optimally designed in terms of energy and communication costs. therefore, in our work, we design and propose an optimized ZigBee - based lightweight end to end system to measure and evaluate plant action potentials. Our system's design functionality response results, demonstrated a significant reduction in the firmware code length, to be loaded in the microcontroller unit, potential use of 8 - bit microcontrollers with low memory capacity and reduced development costs for hundreds of measuring plant points and reduced processing and communication costs. All these results makes the system suitable for large scale use in agricultural IoT applications.

Many applications make use of the edge devices in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), including video surveillance, traffic monitoring and enforcement, personal and health care, gaming, habitat monitoring, and industrial process control. However, these edge devices are resource-limited embeddedsystemsthat require a low-cost, low-power, and high-performance encryption/decryption solution to prevent attacks such as eavesdropping, message modification, and impersonation. this paper proposes a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based design and implementation of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm for encryption and decryption using a parallel-pipeline architecture with a data forwarding mechanism that efficiently utilizes on-chip memory modules and massive parallel processing units to support a high throughput rate. Hardware designs that optimize the implementation of the AES algorithm are proposed to minimize resource allocation and maximize throughput. these designs are shown to outperform existing solutions in the literature. Additionally, a rapid prototype of a complete system-on-chip (SoC) solution that employs the proposed design on a configurable platform has been developed and proven to be suitable for real-timeapplications.

More widespread adoption requires swarms of robots to be more flexible for real-world applications. Multiple challenges remain in complex scenarios where a large amount of data needs to be processed in real-time and high degrees of situational awareness are required. the options in this direction are limited in existing robotic swarms, mostly homogeneous robots with limited operational and reconfiguration flexibility. We address this by bringing elastic computing techniques and dynamic resource management from the edge-cloud computing domain to the swarm robotics domain. this enables the dynamic provisioning of collective capabilities in the swarm for different applications. therefore, we transform a swarm into a distributed sensing and computing platform capable of complex data processing tasks, which can then be offered as a service. In particular, we discuss how this can be applied to adaptive resource management in a heterogeneous swarm of drones, and how we are implementing the dynamic deployment of distributed data processing algorithms. With an elastic drone swarm built on reconfigurable hardware and containerized services, it will be possible to raise the self-awareness, degree of intelligence, and level of autonomy of heterogeneous swarms of robots. We describe novel directions for collaborative perception, and new ways of interacting with a robotic swarm.
