the leading platforms in modern software development for applications with the user interface are web and mobile platforms. In the earlier days, it was common that the purpose of the client side of these applications only display data and process interactions, while the backend ran all business logic in the background. Recently a new trend can be identified that the client apps include complex business logic as well. Modern web frameworks and mobile technologies rely on the client device's computing capacities for the maximal performance, therefore provide built-in services to cache data and run steps of the business logic on the client device. this paradigm is illustrated by the success of PWA technology and by offline applications. the user interface of modern applications is designed by UX designers, who focus rather on the ease of use and user experience then safety and soundness, which often leads to disrupting the well-defined business process by introducing new sub-steps and alternative ways. these tendencies altogether result that the client-side of modern applications also implement a lot of business logic that already implemented by the backend in a more strict, straightforward approach. In a more abstract approach, the client and the server work with the same type of documents by performing two different business processes that exist at the same time. the two layers of the application are often developed by different teams, where frontend and backend specialists work simultaneously. Altogether this results in new risks that should be mitigated by continuously evaluating the consistency of the two business processes during the whole development life-cycle. this evaluation should identify if the two processes are consistent, special tools have to be introduced that ensure that after performing a particular iteration in the development roadmap, the consistency is still maintained. the goal of this paper is to introduce a formal model for this evaluation and

the benefits of the limited preemption scheduling model serve to minimize preemption overhead while enabling cooperative scheduling between real-time tasks. Preemption point placement (PPP) algorithms are employed to select a suitable subset of preemption locations for limited preemption scheduling that optimize task worst case execution time. Similarly, preemption threshold scheduling enhances schedulability in a fully-preemptive environment by taking advantage of execution time slack in a task set by adjusting preemption thresholds to permit tasks to completely execute non-preemptively where possible. the ability to execute non-preemptively offers reduced cache related preemption delay (CRPD) further enhancing limited preemption schedulability. In this work, we integrate limited preemption scheduling using preemption placement with preemption threshold scheduling to realize further task set schedulability benefits. A case study using synthetically generated tasksets will demonstrate the significantly improved (up to a 30% increase in breakdown utilization) schedulability benefits of our proposed integrated PPP and optimal threshold assignment (OTA) algorithm.

Energy consumption represents one of the most relevant issues by now in operating computing infrastructures, from traditional High Performance computing Centers to Cloud Data Centers. Low power System-on-Chip (SoC) architectures, originally developed in the context of mobile and embedded technologies, are becoming attractive also for scientific and industrial applications given their increasing computing performances, coupled with relatively low costs and power demands. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the most representative SoCs for a computational intensive N-body benchmark, a simple deep learning based application and a real-life application taken from the field of molecular biology. the goal is to assess the trade-off among time-to-solution, energy-to-solution and economical aspects for both scientific and commercial purposes they are able to achieve in comparison to traditional server-grade architectures adopted in present infrastructures. Efficient traffic control remains a challenging task, especially during and after special events such as emergency vehicle traversals or blocked links due to disabled vehicles. While existing approaches aim to reduce travel delays, they do not consider recovery from spillbacks caused by such interruptions in the traffic network. this paper (1) presents an optimal algorithm that maximizes the traffic flow through the road network while ensuring that spillbacks do not occur during normal operations, (2) proposes an effective, predictable mitigation strategy to recover from spillbacks caused by special events and which may have propagated through multiple links and/or intersections in the network, and (3) provides worst-case wait time bounds as well as recovery time bounds associated with the proposed techniques. Compared to existing approaches, our optimal strategy shows a 53.2% improvement in worst-case travel times. Additionally, our mitigation strategy can recover from spillbacks that have propagated through multiple links in the network by up to 50.9% quicker than the existing approaches.

Growing demand for perishable products across the globe, propelled by a paradigm shift in customer expectation poses a challenge to cold chain logistics. Studies show that an increased volume of losses incurs due to a lack of visibility across the supply chain. It is imperative to focus on processes and technological integration among all players to improve operational efficiency. Narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) is relatively a new technology with the wider network coverage. this article aims to provide a conceptual framework, to monitor the performance on a real-time basis and enhance the decision making. the proposed cold chain solution based on NB-IoT is a real value enhancer with its ultra-low-cost, easy implementation, interoperability with the various network, low energy consumption and intelligent data analysis feature is ideal for a temperature-sensitive end to end supply chain monitoring. the NB-IoT device is embedded in the pallet integrates sensors for temperature and other environmental variations. High coverage capacity at a low cost will contribute to intensify the communication and optimize the cold chain for service excellence.

Many small Unmanned Ground Vehicle today are used as IoT systems. Some of these systems are equipped with low-cost resources that are not guaranteed to perform the high quality movements that are required by an operator or an application. To improve the quality of these systems they should be equipped with real-time functions. For this type of solutions, embedded systems are often constructed as soft real-time systems that are equipped with a microcontroller without a real-time clock. the authors focus on possibilities and limitations of soft real-time systems implemented on Raspberry Pi based on measurements with usage cyclictest and ftrace tools. the prepared experiments allowed to determine which configuration of a soft real-time system gives the minimum jitter for the set period of cycle time and the stability of execution of a real-time process.

real-time network intrusion and anomaly detection systems designed for battery powered devices are in high demand. this paper presents a study of unsupervised and supervised memristor based neuromorphic systems for such tasks. AutoEncoder (AE) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) algorithms are used to design memristor based intrusion and anomaly detection systems. the autoencoder shows strong intrusion detection performance with accuracy greater than 92.5% on zeroday attack packets. A real-time online incremental learning and anomaly detection system is also designed using the effective anomaly detection abilities of the AE. the learning system uses two autoencoders, one AE is pretrained for classifying network packets as normal and malicious, and the second AE is initialized with random weights and learns malicious data incrementally. thus, this system is able to flag new attack classes during runtime. the real-time intrusion detection system performs with an accuracy greater than 89.7%. the memristor based implementation shows that the proposed system can be implemented using extreme low power for edge and IoT applications.

Inter-core communication is a central challenge in many-core systems for which Network-on-chips (NoCs) have been demonstrated to scale well and to provide good overall performance. However, not only the distributed structure but also the link switching of NoCs have imposed a great challenge in the design and analysis for real-time systems where timing verification is mandatory. NoC protocols like worm-hole switching are designed with scalability and flexibility in mind, thus the existing link switching protocols usually consider each single link to be scheduled independently. the flexibility of such link-based arbitrations allows each packet to be distributed over multiple switches but also increases the number of possible link states (the number of flits in a buffer) that have to be considered in the worst-case timing analysis for real-time systems. To achieve timing predictability by design, we propose a family of less flexible switching protocols, called Simultaneous Progressing Switching Protocols (SP 2 ), in which the links used by a flow either all simultaneously transmit one flit (if it exists) of this flow or none of them transmits any flit of this flow. Based on the all-or-nothing property of Sp 2 , we reduce the schedulability of the NoC to the uniprocessor self-suspension scheduling problem. Moreover, the proposed approach is not limited to any specific underlying routing protocols, which are usually constructed for deadlock avoidance instead of timing predictability.

Recent advances in positional tracking systems for virtual and augmented reality have opened up the possibilities for ubiquitous motion capture technology in the consumer market. However, for many applications such as in performance art, athletics, neuroscience, and medicine, these systems remain too bulky, expensive, and limited to tracking a few objects at a time. In this work, we present a small wireless device that takes advantage of existing HTC Vive lighthouse tracking technology to provide affordable, scalable, and highly accurate positional tracking capabilities. this open hardware and open software project contains several elements, and the latest contributions described in this paper include: (1) a characterization of the optical distortions of the lighthouses, (2) a new cross-platform WebBLE interface, and (3) a real-time in-browser visualization. We also introduce new possibilities with an adaptive calibration to estimate transformation matrices of lighthouses, and an FPGA approach to improve precision and adaptability. Finally, we show how the new developments reduce setup costs and increase the accessibility of our tracking technology.
