Many safety-critical applications employ embedded real-time systems where both timing and fault tolerance requirements must be continually satisfied. the Regularity-based Resource Partition Model (RRP), which is known for its code level independence between resource level and task level, is used to schedule resource partitions in virtualized real-time systems. this paper presents a fault tolerance model for Regularity-based real-time Virtual Resources to recover from transient hardware faults without modifying user applications. the proposed framework consists of a checkpointing mechanism called Fault-Tolerant RRP with a checkpointing partition followed by a redundancy partition prepared for re-execution to satisfy task deadlines despite the occurrence of faults. the frequency of checkpoints and the number of time slices in the redundancy partition are parameterized by the fault rate of the hardware resource and the sum of the availability factors of the original partition sets. Extensive theoretical analysis and simulation-based experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed framework while incurring minimal overhead.

Networks-On-Chip (NoCs) designed to host advanced embedded applications require simultaneously high performance and efficient real-time guarantees under tight power limitations. Static power management is no longer sufficient to fulfill these goals in the context of a highly dynamic environment, e.g. autonomous driving, leading to mode-dependent system's behavior and substantial changes in traffic patterns. For this purpose, we propose a global and self-aware power management for NoCs. Dynamic voltage and frequency adjustments are performed at runtime depending on the number of currently active applications using protocol-based synchronization. the safety of a solution is assured by formal analysis and extensive experimental evaluation using an vehicle assistance functions, as well as synthetic benchmarks. the proposed scheme provides the desired performance, and when compared with the state-of-the-art approach, it significantly decreases power footprint of the NoC-up to 59% in the considered realistic use-case.

Ethernet has been identified as the most promising technology to be used as the backbone for the communication infrastructure in future automotive networks. Several traffic shapers have been proposed to meet the requirements of low latency and high throughput in automotive applications. Safety-critical traffic typically has strict timing requirements, however, meeting those requirements well ahead of time often brings no benefits. these spare capacities, called slack, could be exploited for the benefit of less critical but still time-sensitive traffic. Existing traffic shaping policies do not offer efficient possibilities to reduce and/or exploit this slack. In this paper, we propose a novel, scalable approach for slack-based traffic shaping, which can significantly improve the performance of time-sensitive traffic, at the expense of the slack of safety-critical traffic, which still fulfils all timing requirements. the promising results of the experimental evaluation suggest that the proposed approach represents an efficient means for meeting multi-dimensional and versatile requirements of current- and next-generation automotive applications.

this paper addresses the problem of energy characterization in partitioned systems. the goal is to use this model to minimize energy consumption. Controlling the frequency at which CPUs can operate is a common technique to reduce the system energy consumption. Techniques as DVFS assume that decreasing the system frequency decreases the system energy, in spite of increasing the time the processor is busy. this relationship between temporal load, frequency and energy is studied in this paper. All works assume that this relationship is linear but we provide a new energy model that relates the previous variables through a non-linear relation. We also present a comparison in terms of energy between the linear and the non-linear model.

real-time Calculus (RTC) is a powerful framework for modeling and analyzing complex networked real-time systems. RTC builds up on and shares many similarities with Network Calculus (NC), but some concepts are not completely the same in RTC and NC. One of the most important properties in NC is pay-burst-only-once, which can improve the precision of end-to-end performance analysis. Naturally, people would expect the pay-burst-only-once property to also hold in RTC. In fact, some existing work has used it in some performance analysis problems. Unfortunately, the pay-burst-only-once property has never been proved in RTC. there are even some results seeming to be against the pay-burst-only-once property in RTC. In this paper, we prove that the pay-burst-only-once property indeed holds in RTC.

Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have shown themselves promising in various applications at disaster sites because they can move through the sites easily and are not hindered by topography. the purpose of our study is to develop a path-planning algorithm for the position-estimation systems of UAVs to search for survivors. To achieve this aim, this study clarifies the basic characteristics of the algorithm in a real environment. In this study, we considered the necessary conditions for a UAV's path-planning algorithm, proposed an algorithm based on probe request information, and evaluated the algorithm in a real environment under various conditions. We showed that the algorithm was suitable for approaching a target object and demonstrated the potential of the proposed algorithm to search for survivors at disaster sites.

With modern advancements in technology nodes and increasing design density, it is becoming more challenging to handle integrity and reliability checks as signoff verification steps. Electromigration (EM), IR drop, and power analysis play an important role as verification reliability signoff measures for any integrated circuits (ICs). As we step forward into advance technology nodes, the interconnect wire width becomes thinner along with transistor size. this makes the wire resistance more dominant at advance technology nodes like 10 nm and 7 nm. this increasing resistance introduces high IR drop and power issues which play significant role in the functionality failure of any electronic device with lower process technology nodes. Due to failures in hardware and functionality, more time and efforts are required for signoff. Electromigration analysis has also become a critical task due to technology scaling and increasing current density in small cross section area of routing wires. this work explores performance analysis in electromigration, voltage drop and power analysis using Redhawk tool. this work also discusses the factors affecting electromigration, voltage drop and power analysis and also the possible solutions to mitigate violations at signoff and in between physical designing stages.

Our objective is to qualitatively assess how users interact with and explore heterogeneous views of data in novel hybrid 2D and 3D visual analytic applications, and assess attitudinal responses on the usefulness of such applications. the application used for the study visualizes simulated network communication data of multiple assets over time, and shows topological, geospatial, and temporal aspects of the data in multiple views. We first perform a usability test, where the participants complete a couple of exploratory tasks: one, identifying corresponding assets in a visualization, and two, identifying patterns/ relationships between particular assets. Participants perform the same tasks using several different system configurations: using only 2D visualizations, using 2D and 3D visualizations together but as separate applications, and using the 2D and 3D visualizations together with multiple coordinated views across the two systems. Afterwards, participants complete a user survey of questions that probe at user preferences and opinions about the relative effectiveness of each system towards accomplishing the given tasks. We discuss how the results of the study confirm current system design decisions, and also evaluate additional user-centric characteristics that must be considered to inform future design decisions. these results will inform hypotheses and guidelines for a future behavioral, quantitative study.

real-time embedded system applications have become pervasive, and with the increasing reliance on automated systems for both critical and non-critical tasks, the trend is set to continue. this growing reliance on real-time embedded systems, as well as the rise in the complexity of these systems, demands an efficient monitoring tool that takes the complex interactions in the system into consideration. these systems are well-specified, and there exists standard error or fault detection mechanism to detect when an anomaly occurs in the applications controlling the operation. Nonetheless, these anomaly detection mechanisms gather information about the behavior of the software against its intended goals through the use of plausibility checks which rely on a priori knowledge of the application behavior. this kind of test raises two issues: (1) there should be a complete characterization of the software to derive the redundant information needed for plausibility checks, (2) this test focuses mainly on detecting errors/faults/anomalies in a single application with no regard to other entities in the integrated system. On the other hand, an embedded real-time system (fitted with an operating system) usually has the operating system and the integrated application statically linked to produce a single executable image. this bespoke nature of the embedded real-time system design means that the kernel traces reflect the behavior of the application and the associated hardware components at every point in time. Consequently, detecting deviations in the kernel trace invariably imply system-wide anomaly detection in the associated application and hardware. thus, this paper targets anomaly not just in the application layer, but also in other layers that make up the real-time embedded system. therefore, we introduce a hierarchical attention-based anomaly detection (HAbAD) model based on stacked Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Networks with Attention. KinectFusion is a powerful method for 3D reconstruction of indoor scenes. It uses a Kinect camera and tracks camera motion in real-time by applying ICP method on successive captured depth frames. then it merges depth frames according their positions into a 3D model. Unfortunately the model accuracy is not sufficient for body scanner applications because the sensor depth noise affects the camera motion tracking and deforms the reconstructed model. In this paper we introduce a modification of the KinectFusion method for specific 3D body scanning applications. Our idea is based on the fact that, most body scanners are designed so that the camera trajectory is a fixed circle in the 3D space. therefore each camera position can be determined as a rotation angle around a fixed axis (rotation axis) passing through a fixed point (rotation center). Because the rotation axis and the rotation center are always fixed, they can be estimated offline while filtering out depth noise through averaging many depth frames. the rotation angle can be also precisely measured by equipping the scanner motor with an angle sensor.
