IEEE 802.1Q networks with extensions for time-sensitive networking aim to enable converged networks. Converged networks support hard-real time communication services in addition to the currently supported services classes. real-time communication in these networks requires routes and schedules for the real-time transmissions. We present a formulation in the integer linear programming (ILP) framework which models the joint routing and scheduling problem for flows of periodic real-time transmissions in converged TSN networks. In the joint routing and scheduling problem, both routes and schedules for real-time transmissions are computed in one step, i.e. we do not schedule over predefined routes. We explore the practical limitations of this approach by evaluating the runtime of problem instances with widely varying parameters with a state-of-the-art ILP solver. the observed solver runtimes indicate the qualitative impact of the number of real-time flows, the size of the network, the transmission frequency of real-time transmissions, and the network topology.

there have been many advancements in the field of technology which have helped to shape better solutions for the problems of today. One such advancement that has provided extraordinary services with minimal effort is cloud computing. the aim of this work is to build a GPS tracker for vehicles using serverless architecture. It is equipped with a suitable mobile/web application for viewing the live results. the location data is stored in a cloud database that can be used for processing. the route that the vehicle takes is plotted using google maps after the `to and from' dates are selected by the user. this can be viewed on the website that is specially designed for this vehicle tracking application. An email is sent to the user if movement outside a specific geographical boundary is detected. these geographical boundaries or geofences are customized based on the user's desire. Incorporating cloud computing has increased the efficiency of storage and analysis of data. thereby, enhancing the features available in vehicle tracking applications.

One of the critical aspects of staying ahead of the competition is to embrace technological advancements and to manage the change successfully. One such advanced technology is Machine Learning (ML), which finds applications in several businesses. We present an application of ML in forecasting the future revenue generation of a retail chain based on previous sales values along with several non-intuitive external factors such as economic performance, consumer price index, unemployment rate, fuel prices, ambient temperature, and price markdowns that may have a causal relationship with revenue generation. the model will provide insights into how the external factors affect the revenue of a retail business. We have employed techniques like Random Forest Regression and Vector Autoregression (VAR). We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of these methods by comparing their MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) among themselves and with univariate regression techniques such as Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA).

Stack sharing between tasks may significantly reduce the amount of memory required in resource-constrained real-time embedded systems. Existing work on stack sharing mainly focused on stack sharing between tasks that neither leave any data on the stack from one instance to another nor suspend themselves, i.e. tasks with a so-called single-shot execution. In this paper, we consider stack memory requirements of AUTOSAR/OSEK-compliant scheduling policies for a mixed task set, consisting of so-called basic and extended tasks. Unlike basic tasks, that have a single-shot execution, extended tasks are allowed to leave data on the stack from one instance to another and to suspend themselves. We prove that minimizing the shared stack requirement for such a mixed task set is an NP-hard problem. We subsequently provide an heuristic-based algorithm to minimize stack usage of a mixed task set, and evaluate the algorithm through a case study of an implementation of an unmanned aerial vehicle. An extended version of the paper is available as technical report [5].

Since vertical planes and lines are rich and unique for indoor localization, such as walls, posters, frames of doors and windows, a lightweight hybrid modeling method based on simple spatial features is proposed, specifically for the indoor localization and navigation applications. Firstly, the vertical planes in 3D space are detected and projected to generate a simplified floor plan of indoor environment. Here, a strategy of region segmentation and georeferencing is employed. Moreover, the plane-based model is further optimized by iterative merging algorithm. then, some remarkable vertical lines are detected and localized based on the plane-based model, which can compensate the inaccuracy of plane ranges and the deficiency of remarkable planes in some areas. the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm is applied to match homonymous lines between sequential image frames, in cooperation with Kalman filtering for simultaneous tracking of vertical lines. Finally, a hybrid indoor model consisting of vertical planes and lines is generated, which is much more lightweight than previous 3D modeling methods. Experiments in real indoor scenes using single off-the-shelf smartphone verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. the whole model size of an indoor environment with more than 200m 2 area is only 302 Bytes, and it achieves an accuracy of about 0.3 meters.

Verifying complex Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) is increasingly important given the push to deploy safety-critical autonomous features. Unfortunately, traditional verification methods do not scale to the complexity of these systems and do not provide systematic methods to protect verified properties when not all the components can be verified. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a real-time mixed-trust computing framework that combines verification and protection. the framework introduces a new task model, where an application task can have both an untrusted and a trusted part. the untrusted part allows complex computations supported by a full OS with a realtime scheduler running in a VM hosted by a trusted hypervisor. the trusted part is executed by another scheduler within the hypervisor and is thus protected from the untrusted part. If the untrusted part fails to finish by a specific time, the trusted part is activated to preserve safety (e.g., prevent a crash) including its timing guarantees. this framework is the first allowing the use of untrusted components for CPS critical functions while preserving logical and timing guarantees, even in the presence of malicious attackers. We present the framework design and implementation along with the schedulability analysis and the coordination protocol between the trusted and untrusted parts. We also present our Raspberry Pi 3 implementation along with experiments showing the behavior of the system under failures of untrusted components, and a drone application to demonstrate its practicality.

With the rapid development of information technology, embedded safety critical system extremely places high demands on system safety and reliability. Besides, mu C/OS-II is a real-time embedded system, which has passed the safety certification of Federal Aviation Administration, and can be applied to systems with extreme demands of safety. But it lacks the protection mechanism when a task encounters an error. In this paper, aiming to transient faults, we propose an efficient checkpoint and recovery mechanism in mu C/OS-II, and implement the optimization based on user-directed memory exclusion and incremental checkpoint, which improves the performance when backup and recovery. the experiments show the time and space overhead after introducing our mechanism, and present that our mechanism has less impact on the normal execution of tasks.

Stack sharing between tasks may significantly reduce the amount of memory required in resource-constrained real-time embedded systems. On the downside, stack sharing decreases the predictability of a system, e.g. may give rise to a substantial variation in the address space for the memory locations used for the stack of a task. As a result, the precision of execution-time bounds may be reduced, the pessimism in schedulability analysis increased, and optimizations to increase schedulability hampered. In this paper, we present EMPRESS, an Efficient and effective Method for PREdictable Stack Sharing. We assume priority-based scheduled systems, where the binary pre-emption relation on tasks is a strict partial order, and static bounds on each task's stack usage. Both assumptions are common in the embedded real-time domain. For such systems, EMPRESS provides a predictable stack sharing between tasks, i.e. the stack of every task is always located in the very same memory area, even for tasks sharing a stack. It therefore combines the predictability of dedicated stack spaces with the reduced memory need of a shared stack. We exemplify the benefits of EMPRESS using as a case study an implementation of an unmanned aerial vehicle, and explain how EMPRESS can be realized within the Erika Enterprise RTOS without additional overheads.

Safe and efficient traffic control remains a challenging task with the continued increase in the number of vehicles, especially in urban areas. this paper focuses on traffic control at intersections, since urban roads with closely spaced intersections are often prone to queue spillbacks, which disrupt traffic flows across the entire network and increase congestion. While various intelligent traffic control solutions exist for autonomous systems, they are not applicable to or ineffective against human-operated vehicles or mixed traffic. On the other hand, existing approaches to manage intersections with human-operated vehicles cannot adequately adjust to dynamic traffic conditions. this paper presents a technology-agnostic adaptive real-time server based approach to dynamically determine signal timings at an intersection based on changing traffic conditions and queue lengths (i.e., wait times) to minimize, if not eliminate, spillbacks without unnecessarily increasing delays associated with intersection crossings. this work is also the first to provide worst-case bounds on wait time making our approach more dependable and predictable. the proposed approach was validated in simulations and on a realistic hardware testbed with robots mimicking human driving behaviors. Compared to the pre-timed traffic control and an adaptive scheduling based traffic control, our algorithm is able to avoid spillbacks under highly dynamic traffic conditions and improve the average crossing delay in most cases by 10-50%.

Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are well-known probabilistic graphical models for time series of discrete, partially observable stochastic processes. In this paper, we discuss an approach to extend the application of HMMs to non-Gaussian continuous distributions by embedding the belief about the state into a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS), and reduce tendency to overfitting and computational complexity of algorithm by means of various regularization techniques, specifically, Nyström subsampling. We investigate, theoretically and empirically, regularization and approximation bounds, the effectiveness of kernel samples as landmarks in the Nyström method for low-rank approximations of kernel matrices. Furthermore, we discuss applications of the method to real-world problems, comparing the approach to several state-of-the-art algorithms. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
