Live TV production, due to its distributed nature, requires broadcasters to deploy equipments and human resources to several different places. this increases production costs. the traditional method through outside broadcasting vans is expensive. Migrating this type of application onto clouds is a promising method to reduce the cost. However, the Quality of Experience (QoE) can hardly be assured because of the cloud performance uncertainty. Auto-scaling the infrastructure based on dynamic workloads at runtime is also difficult. the feasibility of CloudsStorm framework, which is the core component of SWITCH (Software Workbench for Interactive, time Critical and Highly self-adaptive Cloud applications) workbench, handling the lifecycle of the time critical application development and performance monitoring, infrastructure planning and provisioning, etc., is demonstrated with the aspect of live events broadcasting. It makes a significant attempt to fill the DevOps gap when migrating applications from legacy systems onto clouds. A live streaming application is demonstrated as a use case example.

Since the appearance of Amazon Lambda in 2014, all major cloud providers have embraced the "Function as a Service" (FaaS) model, because of its enormous potential for a wide variety of applications. As expected (and also desired), the competition is fierce in the serverless world, and includes aspects such as the run-time support for the orchestration of serverless functions. In this regard, the three major production services are currently Amazon Step Functions (December 2016), Azure Durable Functions (June 2017), and IBM Composer (October 2017), still young and experimental projects with a long way ahead. In this article, we will compare and analyze these three serverless orchestration systems under a common evaluation framework. We will study their architectures, programming and billing models, and their effective support for parallel execution, among others. through a series of experiments, we will also evaluate the run-time overhead of the different infrastructures for different types of workflows.

Geographical Information System helps everyone in many industries on a regular basis. “iReportMo” is an android mobile application that uses GIS-based to let a citizen report an incident right from the mobile device. this application will serve as an easy access that caters emergency concern such as fire, accident, crime and barangay incident in Metro manila. the user may provide details such as location, date, time, and images when reporting an incident. there are few existing literatures have focused on providing assistance to any emergency event using the newest technology, but few have not touched on providing a centralized system that caters all the emergency in one application. thus, this paper automates the efforts of the manual transaction to effectively respond to an emergency hazard in City of Manila thus makes it more efficient to gather important information in real time.

real-time object recognition on low-power embedded devices is a widely requested task, needed in manifold applications. However, it is still a demanding challenge to achieve desired performance goals. For example, for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) or autonomously driven cars, object recognition and lane detection are indispensable tasks. Another field of application is the continuous retrieval of the construction progress on-site for validation of the construction site status, by detecting installed components using a given CAD model. this paper presents a framework for highly customizable object detection systems implemented on a single heterogeneous computing chip leveraging FPGA logic and standard processors. the FPGA logic is used to implement a custom variation of the Hough Transform and further image processing tasks efficiently. the dedicated logic is supplemented with a software stack, which consists of a Linux operating system, including hardware access drivers, as well as high-level libraries like OpenCV and Robot Operating System (ROS) - all running on the same device. the capabilities of the system are demonstrated for three application scenarios, namely race track recognition, lane recognition and object detection tasks performed within a construction assistance system.

Current high-end, data-intensive real-time embedded sensor applications (e.g., radar, optronics) require very specific computing platforms. the nature of such applications and the environment in which they are deployed impose numerous constraints, including real-time constraints, and computing throughput and latency needs. Static application placement is traditionally used to deal with these constraints. However, this approach fails to provide adaptation capabilities in an environment in constant evolution. through the study of an industrial radar use-case, our work aims at mitigating the aforementioned limitations by proposing a low-latency online resource manager derived from techniques used in large-scale systems, such as cloud and grid environments. the resource manager introduced in this paper is able to dynamically allocate resources to fulfill requests coming from several sensors, making the most of the computing platform while providing guaranties on non-functional properties and Quality of Service (QoS) levels. thanks to the load prediction implemented in the manager, we are able to achieve a 83% load increase before overloading the platform while managing to reduce ten times the incurred QoS penalty. Further methods to reduce the impact of the overload are as well as possible future improvements are proposed and discussed.

Technologies of irrigation systems are developed with a focus on intelligent water management, advanced features and remote control of solar photovoltaic watering systems (SPVWSs). the new generation of inexpensive microcontrollers comes with high level of computation capability and provides low-cost solutions. In this direction, this paper presents a new multithreading design and implementation of an embedded irrigation system running on solar power. the design combines the advanced concepts of concurrency programming, namely multithreading and virtual timers, with the embedded computing resources of smart devices. According to the design and test results through an experimental greenhouse, this device provides an accuracy real-time management of all activities of the SPVWS with eventually a low power consumption. © 2018 IEEE.

Implementing a Natural Language Processing (NLP) system requires considerable engineering effort: creating data-structures to represent language constructs;reading corpora annotations into these data-structures;applying off-the-shelf NLP tools to augment the text representation;extracting features and training machine learning components;conducting experiments and computing performance statistics;and creating the end-user application that integrates the implemented components. While there are several widely used NLP libraries, each provides only partial coverage of these various tasks. We present our library COGCOMPNLP which simplifies the process of design and development of NLP applications by providing modules to address different challenges: we provide a corpus-reader module that supports popular corpora in the NLP community, a module for various low-level data-structures and operations (such as search over text), a module for feature extraction, and an extensive suite of annotation modules for a wide range of semantic and syntactic tasks. these annotation modules are all integrated in a single system, PIPELINE, which allows users to easily use the annotators with simple direct calls using any JVM-based language, or over a network. the sister project COGCOMPNLPY enables users to access the annotators with a Python interface. We give a detailed account of our system's structure and usage, and where possible, compare it with other established NLP frameworks. We report on the performance, including time and memory statistics, of each component on a selection of well-established datasets. In this work, we improve several steps of our PLASMON ASSISTED MICROSCOPY OF NANO-SIZED OBJECTS (PAMONO) sensor data processing pipeline through application of deep neural networks. the PAMONO-biosensor is a mobile nanoparticle sensor utilizing SURFACE PLASMON RESONANCE (SPR) imaging for quantification and analysis of nanoparticles in liquid or air samples. Characteristics of PAMONO sensor data are spatiotemporal blob-like structures with very low SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIO (SNR), which indicate particle bindings and can be automatically analyzed with image processing methods. We propose and evaluate deep neural network architectures for spatiotemporal detection, time-series analysis and classification. We compare them to traditional methods like frequency domain or polygon shape features classified by a Random Forest classifier. It is shown that the application of deep learning enables our data processing pipeline to automatically detect and quantify 80 nm polystyrene particles and pushes the limits in blob detection with very low SNRs below one. In addition, we present benchmarks and show that real-time processing is achievable on consumer level desktop GRAPHICS PROCESSING UNITs (GPUs). this paper presents a system architecture for mapping and real-time monitoring of a relatively large industrial robotic environment of size 10m x 15m x 5 m. Six sensor nodes with embedded computing power and local processing of the 3D point clouds are placed close to the ceiling. the system architecture and data processing is based on the Robot Operating System (ROS) and the Point Cloud Library (PCL). the 3D sensors used are the Microsoft Kinect for Xbox One and point cloud data is collected at 20 Hz. A new manual calibration procedure is developed using reflective planes. the specified range of the used sensor is 0.8m to 4.2 m, while depth data up to 9m is used in this paper. Despite the fact that only six sensors are used and that the Kinect sensors are operated beyond the specified range, a benchmark of the accuracy compared with a Leica laser distance meter demonstrates an accuracy of 10mm or better in the final 3D point cloud.
