A Sandpile cellular automata-based scheduler and load balancer

We present in this paper a novel load balancing and rescheduling approach based on the concept of the Sandpile cellular automaton: a decentralized multi-agent system working in a critical state at the edge of chaos. Our goal is providing fairness between concurrent job submissions in highly parallel and distributed environments such as currently built cloud computing systems by minimizing slowdown of individual applications and dynamically rescheduling them to the best suited resources. the algorithm design is experimentally validated by a number of numerical experiments showing the effectiveness and scalability of the scheme in the presence of a large number of jobs and resources and its ability to react to dynamic changes in real time. Android apps often include libraries supporting certain features, or allowing rapid app development. Due to Android's system design, libraries are not easily distinguishable from the app's core code. But detecting libraries in apps is needed especially in app analysis, e.g., to determine if functionality is executed in the app, or in the code of the library. Previous approaches detected libraries in ways which are susceptible to code obfuscation. For some approaches, even simple obfuscation will cause unrecognised libraries. Our approach - Ordol - builds upon approaches from plagiarism detection to detect a specific library version inside an app in an obfuscation-resilient manner. We show that Ordol can cope well with obfuscated code and can be easily applied to real life apps.

Internet of things (IoT) is a paradigm which has become extremely popular, with applications spanning from e-health to industrial controls. IoT architectures are distributed and often based on constrained devices, which make challenging the task of introducing security mechanisms, in particular those requiring dynamic policy evaluation. In this paper we present UCIoT (Usage Control in IoT), a fault tolerant and adaptable framework for the enforcement of usage control policies in IoT environments. UCIoT brings the functionalities of a U-XACML-based usage control framework on a decentralized, distributed and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architecture. In the present work, we describe an application of UCIoT in a Smart-Home environment, presenting also two possible use cases where usage control is exploited to implement a policy for energy saving and a policy for safety. A set of experiments on real devices is finally presented to report the performance of the system, measuring the overhead introduced by the UCIoT framework.

In the cloud-based Internet of things, the amount of available network bandwidth can become a bottleneck, especially in real-time sensor network applications. this study presents an architecture and an algorithm for context-aware fog data filtering that can map data features and their appearance frequency. this reduces the amount of data sent using long-range communications. In this study, a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based algorithm is presented, and a feature mapping technique is used. the filtering algorithm considers both historic data and adjacent sensor data to determine whether unexpected sensor outputs are caused by events in the system or faulty sensor readings. the type of data transmitted to supervisors is determined by the needs of the receivers. In this way, both events and raw data can be accessed from the proposed filters.

Multicore platforms are nowadays widely used for audio processing applications, due to the improvement of computational power that they provide. However, some of these systems are not optimized for temporally constrained environments, which often leads to an undesired increase in the latency of the audio signal. this paper presents a real-time multicore audio processing system based on the T-CREST platform. T-CREST is a time-predictable multicore processor for real-time embedded systems. Multiple audio effect tasks have been implemented, which can be connected together in different configurations forming sequential and parallel effect chains, and using a network-onchip for intercommunication between processors. the evaluation of the system shows that real-time processing of multiple effect configurations is possible, and that the estimation and control of latency ensures real-time behavior.

High productivity embedded network software is required to run embedded systems within the Internet of things (IoT). Tomakomai InterNETworking (TINET) is a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol stack for use in embedded systems. Although TINET is a compact protocol stack, it comprises many complex source codes and is difficult to maintain, extend, and analyze. To improve scalability and configurability, this paper proposes TINET componentized with the Toyohashi Open Platform for embedded real-time systems (TOPPERS) embedded component system (TINET+TECS), a component-based TCP/IP protocol stack for embedded systems. this component-based TINET offers software developers high productivity through variable network buffer sizes and the ability to add or remove TCP (or UDP) functionality. TINET+TECS utilizes a dynamic TECS component connection method to satisfy the original TINET specifications. the results of an experimental comparison between the proposed component-based and original TINETs show that the execution time and memory consumption overhead are reduced and the configurability is improved. © 2017 IEEE.

In developing state of the art applications for Internet of things (IoT) and Cyber Physical systems (CPS), most applications software and associated hardware are always developed from ground up. However, this approach always involves huge capital outlay, extend time-to-market for products, and contribute to integration delay, especially in the case of Industrial IoT (IIoT). In this paper, it is shown that already existing, widely-available, and low-cost hardware can participate successfully in collaborative computing for new analytics applications, at edges of IIoT and CPS networks. A well-known, low-cost, embedded digital signal processor (DSP) that is fully integrated in many industries is selected and used as a case study. the selected DSP is made more scalable by applying it to new, novel uses at the edge of an IIoT network. the new application includes using it to design useful waveforms needed for collaborative computing at IIoT network edges. embedded-C, a programming language that is suitable for programming resource-constrained network edge devices is used to successfully design needed waveforms for the selected DSP. Collaborative computing is achieved by sending the designed waveforms from the network edge, across diverse communication channels, to the fog layer, and then, use it at the fog layer to remove noise in selected IIoT data. Correlation coefficient is positive and high between output of noise removal achieved by waveforms from the low-cost DSP when compared to noise removal achieved by waveforms from systems with more computing resources at the fog layer. this signifies a successful collaborative computing using such legacy, low-cost DSP. For low-cost hardware to participate successfully in distributed, real-time collaborative network edge-computing, impact of communication network disturbances must be examined. Trust management systems provide a means for trustworthy interactions in cloud environments. However, trust establishment could be compromised when malicious cloud users intentionally provide unfair feedbacks to decrease the reputation of some cloud providers or to benefit others. In this paper, we define "Feedback Entropy" as a new metric to detect unfair rating attacks. As such, we propose a new detection system able to detect unfair rating attacks by monitoring users' feedbacks during short periods of time. Our proposed approach is designed to detect rapidly such attacks at the point in time they appear and to scale effectively with the increase of the number of feedbacks. Experimental results prove the advantages of the introduced metric and the good performance of the proposed detection system.

Critical embedded systems (CES) are systems in which failures are potentially catastrophic and, therefore, hard constraints are imposed on them. In the last years the amount of software accommodated within CES has considerably changed. For example, in smart cars the amount of software has grown about 100 times compared to previous years. this change means that software design for these systems is also bounded to hard constraints (e.g., high security and performance). Along the evolution of CES, the approaches for designing them are also changing rapidly, so as to fit the specialized needs of CES. thus, a broad understanding of such approaches is missing. therefore, this study aims to establish a fair overview on CESs design approaches. For that, we conducted a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS), in which we collected 1,673 papers from five digital libraries, filtered 269 primary studies, and analyzed five facets: design approaches, applications domains, critical quality attributes, tools, and type of evidence. Our findings show that the body of knowledge is vast and overlaps with other types of systems (e.g., real-time or cyber-physical systems). In addition, we have observed that some critical quality attributes are common among various application domains, as well as approaches and tools are oftentimes generic to CES. © Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

the rapid growth of social media, such as twitter, provides a great opportunity for identifying and analyzing people's emotions in response to various public events, such as epidemics, terrorist attacks and political elections. Detecting the emotions of people on different events are crucial in many applications. However, the high volume and fast pace of social media make it challenging to analyze public emotions from social media data in real-time. In this paper we propose a method to measure public emotion and predict important moments during particular public events. Given a stream of tweets, we analyze the impact of major public events, both tragic and enthusiastic ones, on public emotion. We develop a full-stack architecture that performs real-time emotion analysis on Twitter streams. We design a supervised learning approach for classifying tweets based on the type of the emotion they elicit. then we aggregate each emotion class to discover emotion-evolving patterns over time. We also propose an online approach to predict emotion intensive moments during real-life events. Our emotion analysis methodology is shown to present a fast and robust way of analyzing online stream of tweets.
